It's weird to me that they're not bringing out DS9 stuff earlier since the bulk of the series was specifically about war, but par for the course with Star Trek merch and games. Klingon/Cardassian/Jem'Hadar missions would be fun, and a Nog mini with a detachable leg would rule. Also, I know what a Theremin is!

Theremin is the geekiest nerdiest instrument out there Brent! As I quote Wikipedia "Theremin is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the performer. I played one at a science museum I hugged from all the kids that day

So glad you were able to see Reapercon. This year was my second year going and I intend on going again. While I know there are a number of conventions that have miniature classes and competitions, most of those focus more on games or historical while Reapercon is focused on the mini painting hobby. It's a friendly, supportive environment and getting the feedback from judges, instructors and others has been great.

The palm of your hand is the perfect place to clean your brush. Hands are great, We've been using them to do stuff for a few hundred thousand years, Your skin offers some very light abrasion, like a 2000 sand paper, which is just perfect for gripping the minuscule particles of paint between the ferrel and the bristles. A ceramic plate or a shot glass is smooth and offers no abrasion. Being able to see and feell what you are doing is also a plus. Silver polishing is done the same way, in the palm of your hand with a bit of dish soap. Speaking of misinformation....

I’m so glad you had fun at Reapercon! It’s such a fun and friendly con and is a great representation of Reaper as a company and the hospitality and friendliness of many people around in the community. I’ve been local in Denton for years but this was only my second year going to the con and it has quickly become the highlight of the year for me. My husband and I really enjoyed meeting you and we hope to see you back in future years for more fun games and painting.

On the topic of painting competitions and Nova: I enjoyed the competition, but my first "open competition" style where there can be any number of gold/silver/bronze was gencon, which really set me up for some really dejected emotions with Nova. At Gencon I got silver for all 3 entries, but those entries ranged from a literally unfinished mini where i tried NMM gold for the first time, to a bust I tried really hard on. At Nova, I tried really hard, but I got nothing. I felt awful and worse than any competition before, but that was just that day. I've since recovered and excited to get back to it.

There's footage (probably on KZbin) of Marina Sirtis humourously talking about why Troi went through so many costumes during TNG. It's been a while since I watched it but I recall it being worth a view. Ps, I know what a theremin is.

Thank you for giving Reapercon such a great review! This was my first year to go and I can’t wait to go back. Totally plan on having a “campsite” set up and just paint and make friends for four whole days. Also would be cool to meet both you guys next year. Brent I was the guy that asked for a picture while you were playing the pirate game, sorry for the interruption but it was really cool to meet one on my Mt Rushmore KZbin mini painters.

If you go to Windsor and Newtons webstite, it mentions that the proper storage of their brushes is to have them with the tips facing upwards! So, it is a myth that storing it that way is a bad thing.

The whole “don’t let your brushes dry pointing up” is not only overshared, but actually false. Capillary action will draw paint & water up between the bristles to the ferrule. It really doesn’t matter which way you orient the brush as it dries, because capillary action is _stronger_ than gravity. Just make sure the brush is clean before it dries.

It's a pervasive tip, I feel like I've seen it tons of times in video, and I know I made one where I did and said to do it at one point. I do like the 2 in 1 you mentioned, definitely good for washing your hands when you're done! Perfect way to end a hobby session :)

I've found LA's Totally Awesome works great on acrylics and my airbrushed primers, but I seem to need 91% isopropyl to strip aerosol primers. Between those two things I don't seem to need any other stripping agents.

Great episode as always! Regarding paint strippers I think the real thing people should bare in mind is whether or not the chemicals are easily disposed of ya know? LAs Totally Awesome, Purple Power, Super Clean, etc. can go down the sink whereas things like break cleaner might need to technically be disposed of via hazardous waste locations. Now myths....the one that quickly came to my mind is the gloss coat/matte coast discussion regarding whether one is tougher than the other. For a long time I always heard to gloss coat first for strength/durability then matte coat to cut the shine and add a bit more protection. But there has always been a counter argument that, no, they are both equally as durable. My thought is that gloss is good to put down first for decals, weathering etc. and to provide a nicer finish for the next, matte coat.
@quondamreveries7258
@quondamreveries7258 Жыл бұрын
On heavily used game minis, I put down a gloss coat first, then a matte coat second. My theory is that if I start to see the mini get glossy, the matte coat is starting to rub off and it’s time to apply another coat before the color rubs off. (Of course, someone could have been eating potato chips at the game table. 😃)

Brent mentioned it this episode - don’t get paint in your ferrule. This is clearly a myth. It’s literally impossible to paint an entire mini and not get paint in the ferrule.

Not a hobby tale, but I like how ONLY related to miniature painting companies promote extra-cool-fine-expensive-super brushes with thick triangle holder as something "pro". Meanwhile, rest of the world put this design into kids stuff cause this kind of shape and size is easer to hold and train proper finger grip, Faber-Castell also promote pencils with this design as something that dont roll away from table cause kids are clumsy and messy, is that what they think of us? :D

Don't put metallic paints on your wet palette, as if the *larger* mica particles are going to permeate the paper when the finer pigments won't.

One myth that I've heard and am kind of skeptical of is that you shouldn't put metallic paint on your wet palette so as to not make the other colors on the palette "metallicy" because the metal flakes with filter through the parchment and absorb into the other colors. I've never had this happen to me, but I have no idea if this is another telephone-game falsehood or if there is some validity to it.

I'd like to see Brent wash and point his brushes THEN put them under the microscope to see how much water is left over where hanging them tips down to dry is even necessary. Personally, I think the whole fad started because a mini painter saw a canvas painter doing it, and in their eagerness to be considered a "real" artist, started copying the practice.

Airbrushing with "milk consistency" paint. This is nonsense. The consistency of your paint when airbrushing is HIGHLY dependent on the purpose of that paint layer.
