Compassion is one of the most fundamental ideals for creating a profleurian* world. Profleurian means "supporting the blossoming of full potential for each of us and all of us. When we as a species learn to hold up compassion as the most critical human factor to internalize and teach our children, war cannot exist and the Peace that we each long for will become a reality, both internally and in our shared world. Thanks to each and every one of you who are focusing your hearts on this endeavor.

what a wonderful series of statements. Compassion toward others really does mean choosing to care about other people and where possible reaching out to share the joys and wonders of the world we are gifted with. No greater purpose exists. Harmony reduces fear, anxiety, stress and risk and opens up positive creativity. Lovely presentation

Your nickname says it all. Bless you. No need for putting anyone on a pedestal, just compassion. No need for bettering someone else, just compassion. We work on ourselves, we can't fix others, just do no harm. We all are broken. If we look for the broken parts in others, we will find it - likewise in ourselves. If we look for some good, we will also find it. That is compassion.

I think that about sums it up. The Fiona Project is very proud to be signing the Compassion Charter as a partner. In our work, compassion is critical to helping survivors heal--both in holding compassion for the victims of abuse and for the survivors in holding compassion for themselves. Further, compassion, like forgiveness, does not justify or exonerate wrong-doing. But it will stop hate from taking hold of a wounded heart.

I have had to acknowledge that my self-centeredness has brought suffering to myself & to those around me. While reading some comments below regarding the video clip, The Charter for Compassion, I just had to shake my head. How easily we are distracted from the essence of this message which is, The Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This has nothing to do with religious preference or beliefs OR what we choose to eat but rather letting go of ones need to be RIGHT and embracing your fellow man, woman or child with COMPASSION!

Love yourself, then you can love others. Nobody really feels better for having hurt someone. An important part of compassion seems to be the attempt to understand the pain someone must be experiencing that would make them want to lash out and hurt you. And when you have been hurt, you dont have to hurt back although you may need to get out of harm's way. When it is possible to stand, understand and feel love even when youre being hurt, it is good for *all*.

World peace is a nice and possibly even practical idea, whereas peace within oneself can be more than an idea - a lived experience right now. And, by peace within, I don't necessarily mean sitting in silence without emotions. By peace within, I mean being able to observe myself, all of my thoughts and emotions - accepting whatever is, whether it's a feeling of serenity, hate or curiousness, without trying to make them go away, or if I try, observing and accepting that too.

One can be compassionate for humanity, and still hold to truth. I don't have a lot of room for the teaching of the Taliban in my life. I'm a Christian. I don't hate anyone. I'm an American, and believe that all have the right to pursue the religion of their choice as one of the essential rights endowed by the Creator. That doesn't mean all paths are egual. That doesn't mean there isn't a TRUTH. It means I respect the right of each to find it themselves.

To me, the defining moment(s) for conservative religion (Christianity), occurred during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, when they fiercely & successfully opposed the use of any public funds for HIV research & the development of effective treatment options. Thus, thousands were denied any chance at survival; simply because they see the disease as the punishment of their angry deity.

Thank you for the humanistic charter. But, let up be wise & careful ...“O ye beloved of the Lord! The Kingdom of God is founded upon equity and justice, and also upon mercy, compassion, and kindness to every living soul. Strive e then with all your heart to treat compassionately all humankind-except for those who have some selfish, private motive, or some disease of the soul. Kindness cannot be shown to the tyrant, the deceiver, or the thief because, far from awakening them to the error of their ways, it maketh them to continue their perversity as before. No matter how much kindliness ye may expend upon the liar, he will but lie the more, for he believeth you to be deceived, while ye understand him but too well, and only remain silent out of your extreme compassion.” -Writings of Abdu’l-Baha

I think my pastor stole the text of the video for his sermon today. I thought it was crap when he said it, and I am even more certain now that I know who is behind this message. And moreover, the "ancient tradition" of scripture interpretation mentioned in teh video is one that does not exist -- especially when the scriptures of some faiths (and i can name one in particular) call for violence against nonbelievers and have been authoritatively interpreted to do so since that faith's origin.
