@@FanatikBuilds Michael, sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. I had trouble with the original clutch, which I was never very happy with, and ended up replacing it with a sprung hub style that is still a 6 puck disc. It's a Spec Stage 3 clutch. I'm much happier with this style but it doesn't have a marcel spring so it chatters slightly sometimes during engagement.

Given this advance on your way to an LS powered GT6, the fact that you didn't win your classes in DeBoss Garage's InterNETional car show this year will be just a vague memory when your car wins. 8-)) Your entry needs to be in a "limited tool" category. Glad a commenter straightened out your explanation from the previous video and especially that you had the guts to run the corrected explanation in this video! Mistakes are how YOU learn, correcting them in another video is how WE learn from you! Thank you!! Hurry up and put the guts into your LS 4, I want to hear it run!! It'll also be good for you when new, seemingly intractable problems crop up. Just run the engine for a bit, saying to yourself: "We WILL make this car run just as the engine does!"

And the gents from Project Binky still haven't judged yet, so maybe there's still a chance? 🤞😉 Oh we join you in the eager wait to hear it run! It will likely be a while yet though as I'm planning on getting most of the car done before any new parts go into the engine - just makes sense not to have them sit and potentially rust or deteriorate from lack of use (thinking seals etc)... still though, I want to hear it so I may not be able to wait that long! 😂 Cheers and thanks for the kind words of support, I really appreciate it! 👍

Dude. I love this build. It reminds me so much of when I started building. You use what you have to get it all done. Couple small things. I've learned never to use those stupid white bi-metal hole saws, and instead I buy those Diablo red hole saws from home Depot. So whenever you go to get a replacement one because that one burns up, just get one of those ones and I guarantee you it'll work better. While you're there in the plumbing department you can get a deburring tool meant for pipes and it will still work on those steel plates. Much easier than trying to do it neatly with the Dremel.

Thanks so much Travis, appreciate the words of encouragement! Also, thanks for the tips, the bi-metal ones we've got were on sale at Canadian Tire ... but never again! A soft steel flywheel will shed tiny flakes from wear. These will stick in the disk which will then cut away at the flywheel. This will happen rather quickly. Either harden the flywheel or relieve it and add a friction surface. I learned this the hard way. Best of luck.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, thanks for expressing your concern there, it's 1045 billet which is what I found to be a highly recommended material for building a flywheel. Should be ok as it is and certainly don't want to harden it, as it would then need to be machined again which will likely remove more material than we can allow for. We did at one point consider an aluminum flywheel with a replaceable friction surface but decided against it as even the steel one only weighs 16lbs! Putting a replaceable friction ring on what we've got though is a good fallback, thanks for the suggestion! 😊👍

Great work, I'm in the midst of putting an American v8 into a Japanese sports car, wish I'd seen this a year ago...though it didn't exist a year ago. I'm using a SBF vs the LS platform due to cost and not needing over 400hp. 2 grand for all the big parts is a hell of a deal. You could have a nice side business selling the how to and brackets for the cheaper Ally block LS and T5 combo.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
Sounds great Chest! Which Japanese car are you swapping into? The SBF platform is a great option and we might have gone with it if it wasn't for hood clearance! Their intake manifolds are much taller. Ha, some other people have suggested the same thing, maybe I should consider this more seriously! Cheers 👍
@chestrockwell83283 жыл бұрын
@@FanatikBuilds I'm installing my SBF into an 04' RX8. My research shows the 302 8.2" deck engines are a touch smaller front to back and side to side than either the older SBC or the LS platform. An Iron block SBF only gives up about 20 pounds disadvantage to an Aluminum block LS engine. The LS is without question the better platform for higher HP, anything over 400, not that the SBF can not make over 400 but they have a history of not holding up long; although there are also many people who have made over 500hp and rev'd beyond 7k with great long term success so maybe there is a little more to the story. I'm not looking for much more than 400 crank and even 375-ish is fine for my project. For fitment, the pros/cons of SBF and LS are in height, as you have mentioned. There is no intake manifold for a SBF that compares to how low the LS intake is. Additionally the SBF oil pump hangs off the bottom of the block and about the shortest oil pan depth you can go is 5.75 inches, a touch less. Where as all newer engines use a crank snout drive oil pump and skirted blocks so you gain 2-3 inches below crank center line. I'm not using the OEM ford intake due to height and power output limitation vs cost. No idea how much space you have to work top to bottom. A tasteful hood bulge would be far easier that the path you have taken...though you have done a great job that I'm sure will encourage other to follow suit in there projects.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
@@chestrockwell8328 Ooh an RX8 eh! That'll be great! ... And a bit more reliable than the rotary 😉 (Rob Dahm just entered the chat) We're only shooting for around 300-350hp as the little GT6 will be roughly ~2200-2400lbs so it should be plenty for a fun ride! Well, after seeing the amount of time and diligence that you went through just to mount that starter and all of the corresponding issues involving it. I must say congratulations on a job well done. I have always felt that the LS with that bolt pattern arrangement was much better for swapping into cramped spaces. Now if someone would come up with a affordable swap kit that would do wonder's.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, really appreciate that! Agreed, the 60 degree pattern does make it quite a bit more compact. Still not a LOT of room to work with in our car, but it fits better than a traditional 90 degree pattern would have! A few people have suggested I offer a kit, the bellhousing is the hangup for me though, ideally it would be included but they are not exactly common. Finding someone to cast reproductions would be ideal ... need to give it more thought! Cheers man! 👍
@alloutofbubblegum81653 жыл бұрын
@@FanatikBuilds You might not need to, was the only reason that you used the jeep bell housing because it fit the ford T5? What's stopping someone from using the GM style one? Is the starter on the opposite side? I haven't checked yet, but i wonder if there is a aftermarket bell housing available. I am not all that familiar with the GM family of 60 degree engine's.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
Good point, not supplying a bellhousing would allow for different applications. Likewise not sure of every variant available, but the 2.2l S10 unit has the starter bump on the drivers side, and is still setup for a Ford T4/T5 so no real reason to use it over this Jeep one! The 2.5/2.8l S10 unit has the GM T5 pattern and starter on the passenger side, but just not sure if it's the same location. I feel trying to solve every solution will be more of a headache than it's worth! If I do anything, it'll probably just be for the setup we have, as at least I can be confident it works! :)

Hi, Awesome work! Cool project. There is one thing with hydr. throw out bearing and centerforce counterweights. If you are making shifts around or above 6krpm. Those weights bends pressure plate "fingers" at higher rpm and bushes TOB away from the clutch. Then you need to pump your clutch pedal to move TOB close enough to work. You may want to remove the weights or change different pressure plate. Just for your information.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, didn't look like there was any cause for concern with our exact parts, but thank you for drawing this to our attention, we'll look into it! I'd love to keep the centerforce pressure plate if possible - the extra clamping force will be important as it's a pretty small clutch for our power level! Cheers man 🙂👍

Lovely piece of work! Do remember to balance flywheel, crank and clutch kit all together to minimise the rotational losses and potential wear and tear 🙂
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Manos! We definitely will - though tell me - since the LS crank is already balanced from factory, is it really necessary to use it as well, while balancing the flywheel and clutch? Just unclear on the benefit! 😬 or is it just best practice? Cheers! 👍
@manosfarfarelos86663 жыл бұрын
Good question indeed. It is considered best practice as it's one of the moving parts of the whole assembly so any unevenness of any individual part should in theory be counterbalanced and make the whole assembly balanced correctly. 6 and 8 cylinder engines are far better balanced to start with than 4 cylinders, so it shouldn't be a difficult job I don't think.

Good coverage of stuff that is generally avoided by the more mainstream car programs. Probably as A it's complicated, so they don't want to turn off viewers and B it takes a long time, so for a single car per episode show it would consume most of the show. Keep up the good work! 👍

@@cstavro The only cheapish aluminum truck LS (vortec) I could find at the local junkyards (LM4) was about $1300 CAD all in, and an intake manifold on eBay runs upwards of $500-800 for a used one. We got the entire LS4, T5, bellhousing, clutch, throwout bearing, starter and flywheel for a little over $2k ... So it was a decent savings and worth the effort to us! Get the adapter tested / cycle tested and you could take it to a machine shop, run it on the CMM, get the report out and model. Do the same for the starter mount block and you can make one or two billet aluminum parts for transverse 6 speed / F40 trans projects. Those transmissions don't have a starter mount too. Getting the LS4 / F40 into something like a fiero is difficult too.

I used 1045 as well. Built a 914/Chevy 350 in the 80s. The composition of the steel makes little difference in particle transfer. That's why flywheels are made of iron as it does not transfer.
