Today, we get the T5 mounted up which means both it and the LS4 officially have a new home!
There are a lot of things to consider when swapping an engine and transmission from another car into your own... driveline angles are a huge factor in specific. Thankfully we calculated out all these angles in episode 17, so all we need to do today is just get to work with the grinder!
Our 1971 Triumph GT6 is receiving a transplanted 5.3l LS4 V8 and Mustang T5 gearbox... among other things... like a Corvette Dana 36 differential... and the front suspension from a Crown Victoria… and a bellhousing from a Jeep.
So. Not exactly your typical Triumph.
Next time we've got a lot of details to finish off, as well as a few tasks that will prove to be very helpful in the coming months!
Please SHARE this video with your friends, it's a small step that will really help us!

Nice transmission mount. Also, it seems rather fitting for a British car getting re-built by 2 blokes in a shed. Kudos for working in a confined space while at the same time fabricating some really well-crafted components. Everything actually looks like "it belongs there"...

A thing to check is to make sure that the transmission mount bushings aren't stiffer than the motor mounts. If they are, the result can be a future cracked bellhousing. Also, I would recommend sleeves and pants while welding to protect against UV exposure.

That is a great piece, with your engineering background, thought you might appreciate small suggestion, for a future build. If there is room, if about 5/16 addition width were added and bend it slightly like 30 degrees. It would add stiffness so you could reduce the thickness of the Main piece so all the mounting surfaces and thus the weight, additionally if you dimpled around the hole that would change the stiffness of that area, it looks like there’s room and wouldn’t significantly interfere with the exhaust pipe. Just a thought, keep up The excellent build I great enjoy your work.

Not only must it be functional but it MUST look perfect however much longer that takes !! Great stuff . That chassis looks very well executed and very strong but probably weighs 3 times as much as the original ! But with all that power it's really not going to make any difference ! Well done . Welcome John, glad you found us! Haha, yes, it needs to be functional and aesthetically pleasing. Ironically though, the new frame weighs nowhere near 3x as much ... don't know how it's possible, but the factory one was pretty heavy for what it was! We've been weighing things along the way, and are estimating the finished total to be around 2300-2400lbs, so a bit more than factory, but with better distribution and a lower center of gravity! I think you're right... it will be fun! Cheers and hope you'll enjoy what's to come! 👍

Those boots with shorts look like they do a darn good job of funneling slag and sparks into your ankles. .....Woops, just saw Brian's comment. I was arc welding a Bronco driveshaft for my son and was wearing jeans with a ragged knee. I had total concentration on that weld but noticed that my leg was getting uncomfortably hot. When I flipped the helmet up, I saw that my jeans were on fire. It took my knee days to heal but the weld looked like a machine did it.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
They sure do! Some flip flops would likely help prevent the funneling effect you speak of! 😉 In all seriousness, ironically, it's not too bad... I try to direct the sparks away from me as much as possible... it's those random blobs of weld that make themselves known mighty fast! Never been on fire (yet), it's good having Dad out there as a spotter! Cheers man 👍

Beautiful welding - way nicer than many other feeds I'm watching!! You may need to split the exhaust tubes where they pass the mount or they will be a real fight to get in.

Thanks Andy! I have had some training ... but practice is really what's helping me with the welds! Glad you can even see improvements on video! 😊 Yes, that's exactly what we're planning! I want the entire exhaust system to be removable in sections so it doesn't all have to come out to do something as simple as a transmission fluid change. 👍

Just a thought: Think about heat shielding the exhaust from the tranny. Otherwise, idling for for any length of time might be an issue. IMO

I'm still crying over the short episode but, that is a very impressive trans mount! Great job, again. How high is the bar you've set for yourself? The body, frame, driveline, and assorted components are works of art! It makes me wonder what you are doing with the interior. No way you can top what you've already done so far. Honestly, I have no idea what's in store but I'd bet it will be just as nice, and tastefully done to perfection...but, that is a good ways away yet! I am very much enjoying this series you are doing. I am looking forward to the next episode. Thank you for sharing this build with us. I am sharing this with my friends on Facebook as usual.

Sorry about that Jim! 😊 Really glad you think that though, it's appreciated! I'm always trying to challenge myself to do better work, but the problem with that, is then I look at stuff I did a few years ago and want to redo it! Already planning for the interior and I think it should be pretty nice, you're correct that it is a ways off though - trying to keep up on research for the future so I don't get caught with no plan! Thanks as always for your kind words and sharing with your friends, it really means a lot and I hope you'll enjoy what's to come! Cheers Jim!

Nice progress! On a previous episode you did the front sway bar and after thinking If the steel bar you used doesn't end up working maybe a budget alternative would be a torsion bar from the front of a late 90s chev truck would work. Spring steel cheap and could easily be cut to length and made to work. Just a thought. Either way beautiful car!
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin! The torsion bar idea is a great one, but the difficulty is going to be if it's too long. Unfortunately cutting it down would pretty much negate the point, as it's the welds that are the most likely failure area! Also making the arms would be tricky as one would need splines, and the other a hex-key ... still though, food for thought and I appreciate it man! Cheers 👍

For years I've liked the GT6 but am constantly looking to fixing the goofy shape of the quarter windows and vent! It's tough to do better than the 911 or the E type...but we must try!
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Try we must! Can't argue with the E-type and 911 being unbeatable - though ironically the quarter windows on the GT6 don't bother me as much as the rear end! Always felt it cuts back too high off the ground! Oh well, I think there's always one angle on every car that's not quite perfect 😄 Cheers Shawn!
@Luminaring
@Luminaring 3 жыл бұрын
@@FanatikBuilds Short of changing the whole quarter window. I've modeled a small trim piece at the back of the window to 'round out' the shape. If made as a vent shape...it might work visually. Some black vinyl tape on cardboard, cut to shape is a painless test. (At least it's simpler than reshaping the whole rear end of the car. But now you've got me thinking...)

Love the bolt sleeves. But if you were doing that anyways, why not recess them all the way to the other side for shorter lighter bolts?
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shawn! It's a good question, we kept a bit of length in the sleeves for strength, as the shorter you go, the less support there is along the length of the bolt. As much as saving some weight would be great, I think if we start worrying about grams of bolts, my OCD is going to hit the roof! 😅 Cheers man!

The curve in that transmission mount and easily be removed from it. You can do so by heating the lower two corners to a nice cherry red, at least along the length of the cut you made, and it should straighten that Mount backup just about straight. All you're doing is adding heat and metal always shrinks more than it expands when you heat it up to about 1100 degrees or 1200 degrees where it turns nice and red. You could also do the same thing by putting about the same amount of weld on the bottom of it in the same place as you put on the top of it, but then you would have a bunch of wild stuck to it. I did industrial sheet metal for 40 years, and I have also built a number of varied frames for motorcycles and Automobiles. Years ago I actually corrected this exact same issue doing exactly the same as I have described to you. Somebody had made a transmission mount couldn't figure out how to get it back to straight.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the helpful tips! Thankfully, when we clamped it to the piece of angle iron on the frame before welding, it straightened up a good bit. Hardly noticeable now! Good to know for the future though, cheers! 👍
