I haven't seen a 996 for $10k ever- even when they were going for fairly inexpensive prices 10, 15 years ago. The lowest I've seen one go for is around $18k, and it has almost 200k miles on it. You could maybe find an automatic cab for $20k. But only thing you're getting for $10k is a Boxster.

I'm inclined to agree. If you picked up a 911 for 10 large, it's going to be a rebuild or a basketcase and cost you a fortune in the long run.

It’s true…though 15 years ago you could pick up a nice reasonably low mileage 1980’s 911 SC for right around $10 - $12K….and I passed on so many of them, that my heart hurts just thinking about it..

A 993 for $30K ? Really I would say more like $50k, My friend just bought a 993 C4S for $120K and it needed suspension. A good 996 Manual Coupe is going to be $25K , the one you're driving will be $30k minimum. Don't buy a 996 for $10k ..it'll cost you a fortune to get right.

I had the same budget in my head for the 993, but I went online and did actually find a couple in the 30’s. But I agree, I wouldn’t buy a 996 for 10k, but finding a good condition 996 for 30k isn’t uncommon, finding a good condition of any other gen will surely cost double? Maybe more? I don’t recommend going cheap on a 911, but if you want a 911, and don’t have much of a budget. The 996 is the way to go

This guy has absolutely no clue what he's talking about. Good 993's sell regularly for over 100K. There's no way in hell anyone could find a 993 coupe for 30-35 thousand dollars. The cheapest coupe that I've seen was 60K and it was a tiptronic. 30-35K is the stupidest thing I've heard in years. Absolute and utter nonsense. PS: Where did you find 993 for 30K? Maybe you were looking for some 2007 adverts?

I agree with some of the other posts--you can't touch a decently maintained 996 for less than 30k. Also, they were built from '98-'04. I bought a '00 Carrera which was sold for 80k new, and it did have a few upgrades--but still the base 3.4L engine. I actually prefer the 996. The air-cooled 911's--and all the other air cooled Porsches for that matter--did not take the desert heat very well. I live in the Phoenix metro area and welcomed the switch to water cooled engines. Also, the 996 was the fastest 911 to date; each generation getting progressively faster. The top speed on mine is 174mph. When looking for a 911, I actually limited my search to the 996's and 997's ('05-2012). They are the last of the true "driving" 911s. A flat six that you are 100% in control of. No computerized overrides etc. A purists race car. Who gives a crap what the headlamps look like. And, given its performance, it has become an iconic feature; more of admiration than scorn. The only reason that they are relatively inexpensive compared to other 911s, is that there were a very large number (for Porsche) produced, 185,000. The IMS bearing problem was never endemic and can be proactively managed by having the car checked regularly. The problem will manifest in the oil long before the more severe damage occurs. As their numbers decrease, I predict this model's price will rise exponentially, given their stellar performance, and the reasons mentioned above.

Right….a couple of things. I sold these cars when new - Porsche didn’t ‘try something new’ when they went water cooled with 986/996 it was an absolute necessity for ever improving performance and lower emissions. No one disliked the ‘fried egg’ headlights when new - in fact the 996 was an overwhelming success for Porsche, there would be no 911 today if it wasn’t for 996. IMS bearing issue - have it changed for a ceramic bearing (£2-3k) and problem solved. Bottom line: a 911 is a 911 regardless of year. I remember when no one wanted 964’s (911 from 1990 to 1994) and they could be bought for less than £10k - look at the price of them now.

Just bought one. I love it. Truly I don't really see the difference between my 1998 996.1 and a 997. Other than the price. I love the point you make that a 911 is still a 911. It doesn't really look that different from any other 911. It is super comfortable to drive. Also it has a kind of organic feel to it. There is nothing between the driver and the car and the road. I am going to get the IMS done, probably needlessly. I had the IMS replaced in my 2000 3.2 Boxster S at 198,000 k's [don't know this is in miles] after having had five years of trouble free motoring. The bearing that was taken out was in the same condition as it was when the car was made. Seriously - buy a 996.1 [actually the older the better] you will NOT regret it.

I had my IMS replaced about two weeks ago. It was a single row from a 996.1 and although working, after it was removed it was showing signs of heat discoloration and I kept it to keep an eye on it and it does seep lubricant sitting on my desk. If that is what it appears to be, and a sign of seal failure, I am of the opinion that I dodged a bullet.

Your 1998 996.1 was built on the same line as the 993, using the same hand-built process.. the 997 wasnt.. early 996 (MY1999 or older) dont have onboard computers or eGas.. Has an actual throttle cable.. the 997 has both the OBC and eGas.. Your early 996 doesn;t have traction control either, unless it was optioned with it (which means it may have a factory diff, which was optional).. The 996.2+ all have PSM.. early 996s were the last ones to use Connelly leather (lasts way longer and doesnt have that plasticy feel) and the granite dashboard (significantly less squeaks and rattles than cars before and after it).. Early 996s were built before the engine plant fire that destroyed a TON of engine blocks.. to the point Porsche had to use defective blocks to keep production up.. unfortunately, this lead to a lot of early 986 failures as those blocks failed rather quickly.. In short, if you want the most (and last) analog 911 (no OBC, TC, throttle cable, narrow body), you get an early 996.. Also.. they're the lightest 911 you can get from 1988 to present.. 2901lbs.. under 2900lbs with the Turbo Tech hollow wheels (optional)... 997 cant say any of that.. the only issue is hte headlights, imo.. but I'd prolly sacrifice that for a clean early 996

I own a 2001 Carrera Cabriolet which we purchased for $17.5K with 49K miles and I couldn't be happier. I drive it everyday (it now has close to 75K miles in 2.5 years of ownership) this includes the rain and snow and gravel and whatever else is on the road. It is tough, durable, fast, nimble and with a few scratches here and there I'm not worried about babying it. It came with a removable hard top which is on from November to April (we live in Washington state) and she came with a freshly installed convertible top and fresh tires too! We already owned a 2006 Cayman S that was loaded with everything including PCCBs, PASM and Sport Chrono+ and this one gets driven quite a bit as well but usually the set of keys I grab are for little Ms Carrera, always a hoot to drive and with nothing but ABS she will dance as much as I ask her to! It helps that I do all my own maintenance/repair work but I would still whole heartedly recommend buying a 996 to anyone. Great video, very informative and hopefully inspires some folks to get into Porsche ownership!

I got a liking to the 996 because of its price and the ease of use for day to day practicality! I’m considering it as my first car, which is a massive stretch but it seems feasible. Not only as a first car but as a future investment and project. I remember watching Cars as a kid and there was a blue Carrera named Sally, and I remember loving that character because she was a 911! I really don't think there is as much as stigma with the 996 cars as it used to be. The values have gone up because people bought them, sorted them, and drive them. I bought a 2000 C2 cab manual a little reluctantly and love it. I have chipped away at going through all of the potential maintenance issues, including an LN Engineering IMS bearing replacement. The car runs and drives amazing and puts a smile on my face every time. I think knowing that the car is sorted mechanically, you have confidence in the car. Actually the 996 might be the best 911 ever. A lot of people think the 997 is the Highpoint of a 911 that feels like a 911 versus something that's more modern and less analog feeling. So the big kick on the 996 against the 997 is the headlights which I love and the interior which I'm fine with. I actually think the 997 interior looks like a Toyota. Hey nice video but 10k? Really? And if you compare the steering wheel feed back, 996 is the last model that has it very similar to the lotus Elise’s one. 997 has just lost quite a bit of it. 997 looks better (my favorite) but it’s larger and heavier, and the first gen has the same ims issue… and by the way: ims in 1999 models and early 2000 were much stronger and thus less prone to failure. Look also fore bore scoring during The pre inspection. Fried eggs light: I agree, they are gonna be “classic” in the near future👍. Buy your 996 now while you still can, but don’t go for cheap models, as spare parts are definitely not cheap… and you just don’t wanna start fixing crazy stuff All the time 🤷‍♂️! Ciao! Keep going 👍💪💪

Correct, I believe that in the 996.2 the IMS went to a dual row design with smaller bearings that were more prone to failure than the previous, single row larger bearings. Thanks for watching!

The Elise has a better steering feel for sure, but it's harder to live with an Elise on a daily basis. I had one for a year and have had my 996 for about that long too and the Porsche delivers about 90% of the driving experience of the Elise, but much more in pretty much every other measurable except retention of value. Trouble is, you can't generally use the Elise everyday to the point that you get the benefit of that extra 10% of driving experience. May as well have a 911!

I bought my 1999 coupe in 2016 for $11k from a private owner. I really wanted an air cooled model but prices between the 996 and older air cooled are night and day so I couldn't resist for $11k. While the 996 is the most afordable I wish I didn't settle. I now want an air cooled even more

You could get a new clutch ,flywheel , IMS bearing and RMS done for $2k , less if you do it yourself , easier in the Boxster as you just remove the gearbox , 911 it's the engine.

I think you only need to remove the engine on a 996 to do the IMS if your car is a tiptronic. My manual was done with just the transmission dropped.

buyer beware - ims is the least of problem - easy fix n plenty of alternative parts available. Bore score is the harder n more expensive. Question is whether u have peace of mind unless you get everything sorted. Another issue for these old cars is also the cooling pipes that run the length of the car n into nooks and crammies. Its a fair amount of labour n parts to put yr mind at ease. You have to ask whether u can get another car with the same performance at the same price point.
@carcaveofficial

I don't think it would be hard to find a car with even superior performance at the price point. The thing with Porsche is, as silly as it may seem, the performance isn't the main selling point, especially with a 911. They are great performance cars, but for the money, if your only criteria is performance, there are better values out there.

Spend a small little more and get one with a rebuild engine punched out to 3.8 from 3.4 And no, it’s not $10,000 as much as $25,000-$28,000 with slight fixes. But eventually it will likely have bore scoring

I like the 996 at lower price points. I think there are a few reasons why this gen is not looked at as favorably. Interior and general build quality is below previous and later standards, M96 engine is just not a great engine, even beyond the IMS bearing issue. You still have locasil cylinder liners and various engineering flaws, or rather, decisions made by bean counters which were not ideal. Those things aside, it's still a great car and still a Porsche as you pointed out.
@carcaveofficial

I don't think there will ever be a 'perfect' car, but what I like about Porsche especially is that with every generation they continue to improve. The 996 wasn't perfect, but it was great

Incorrect, the fried egg headlight refers to 996.1 headlight with the ambers.. was fixed in 996.2 it got the gt3 headlight. 996.2 is a much better buy but those I believe had more issues with IMS bearing.
@carcaveofficial
@carcaveofficial Жыл бұрын
I believe with the 996.2 they went to a dual row IMS bearing which was more prone to failure than the original, larger single bearing. But thank you for clarifying the fried egg issue. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the video!
