I've had good results using two regulators, one on the gun and one at the compressor. You set the one at the compressor to a few psi above what you need then use the gun to regulate it down to final pressure. You get much more consistent pressure at the gun while the compressor tank empties.

Too cool...painted my first car 3x...absolutely no previous experience...then watched a couple of your videos...the 3rd time... 2 base coats, 800 hand sand, itcame out well with no experience to judge it by. Applied 3 coats of clear and cut it down with 800, 1000, 1500, 2000... Applied the rotary with fine polish and was completly blown away with the results. I got several compliments... Kbowledge comes from a book or videos, but wisdom comes from experience.. So in closing. Thanks... So dont be scared...Its only paint...😊

Years ago as a kid I painted lots of cars with a little 6cfm 5 gallon compressor. I used a 100lbs propane tank as a auxiliary tank for reserve. I let it build up to max then time it so it caught up when I refilled the gun. Made do for years until I could afford a big compressor.

#1 thing that help a small compressor: remove restrictions! Look inside a 1/4” air fitting. Tiny hole. Use a good 3/8” hose and get 3/8” fittings with 1/4 npt threads. I have a 15-16 gallon California Air Tools oil-less compressor that advertised 5.4cfm at 90 psi. I could see the pressure drop and when I paused could hear the hose fill back up with air! Upgrading the fittings for higher flow made all the difference in the world. I also tapped into the air below the switch (straight off the tank) and installed a 3/8” filter regulator. I can run a die grinder, mini belt sand, or palm DA constant now.
@ljguy300
@ljguy300 2 жыл бұрын
Higher flow is good for bigger tools that need the airflow but not good for the compressor itself. To increase run time and pressure I would use the 1/4 npt fittings with 1/4" hose on a smaller compressor.
@MissionRestomod
@MissionRestomod 2 жыл бұрын
@@ljguy300 CFM (cubic feet per minute) you can move more air with the same pressure if the hose and fittings are bigger. Common sense. If the tool consumes air faster than the hose can provide it, you’re toast. That’s what was happening to me.

You can run the pancake compressor into a holding tank. It'll increase your air volume making the compressor cycle less and also keeps the air pressure variances to a minimum. Plus an air holding tank is a good addition to a garage for quick tire inflating away from the compressor.
@944LS
@944LS 2 жыл бұрын
Note on this, it does work, I have done it. However adding a larger tank will make your compressor run longer each time it comes on, so be careful it can overwork the compressor and burn it out.

Instead of a mini gun you can also use an LVLP (Low pressure low volume). I used a sprayit SP-33500k with a Bostitch 6 gallon pancake compressor to spray my del sol front bumper, hood and license plate panel and it came out looking as good as factory. The air would start running out about half way into a panel but I would just wait 20sec then continue.

This is definitely the kind of motivation I needed. I'm not a body guy by any means, but I need to redo the rockers and bumpers on my truck. I've been told time and time again that a 6 gallon compressor just isn't enough for painting. Considering no one can really explain why, I figured I would buy one...if all else fails, at least now I have one to fill tires with. Though I do remember a guy I used to know years ago telling me that painting isn't as hard as people make it...there's nothing you can't fix and redo with painting.

The compressor just gave enough air consistently to do one full panel at a time ... The compressor also builds up full pressure in less than 20seconds ... I believe this set-up is surely a hack! ... ... ... Much Appreciation for you Brian for having liberty in your vocation to share openly

I just replicated your process with a cheap spray gun similar to yours but silver color (CENTRAL PNEUMATIC 120cc HVLP Touch Up Air Spray Gun) with a .8 mm nozzle from Harbor Freight to be able to do this project immediately rather than wait for the same spray gun that you used, on Amazon. Being that everything is sadly made in China, I found the same 6 Gal compressor at HomeDepot under the Porter Cable brand. Picked up factory paint code paint at my auto paint supply w/reducer, and I had amazing results. I didn't need to do too many adjustments other than regulate the psi to 45 psi which is the max that the spray gun could handle and it sprayed just like you demonstrate in your video!

Good information as always and thank you, but how do you keep everything clean with no overspray in your videos ? I'm amazed how you achieve it, when I painted in my garage with 2k isocyanate hardening paint system, sticks on anything it lands on, you can never get it off when its dry or cured.

I painted the door jambs in my Miata with a similar compressor and the tiny HVLP that came in my two gun kit. To find out whether or not it will do the job for me, I started with a full tank of air, had the air filter and regulator on and connected the paint gun. No paint in the cup, line pressure set to what I was confident would spray a reasonable pattern, then while holding the gun wide open I waited to see how long it would take for the pressure at the gun to drop. It lasted several minutes, so I was confident it would work. It did, but you have to refill the cup a lot when using the little detail gun.

Coatings rule is coverage +1 more. 3rd clear pass would increase coating thickness, durability,& longevity out in the sun & elements. Already set up and taped off, gun laying there. Extra time spent is well worth it IMO!

Was it me that made that pancake comment? lol. I painted my van with a pancake compressor, did it piece by piece and came out good. not amazing but good enough to where people compliment it. I did single stage gloss oil though so no need for clear coat. Gonna redo it soon in a different color, just the prep takes forever and ever and ever lol..

Hi Brian. This video helps a lot to build confidence and start spraying. I have a question and it’s not a real world situation. For a panel with scratches in clear coat, can I DA the panel with a P800 or P1000 and reapply clear coat? I.e. go over the original basecoat and clearcoat with new clear. Will this look bad or it’s a standard practice in blending jobs?

I am definitely doing this to my car roof and hood since sun damage faded my paint, the car painting shop wants me to waste $1000+ on a simple job when i can do this at home! Thanks for the video im getting the equipment and the wraps to do this!

I did see a car painted with a high quality airless spay gun and the result was excellent: the painter was a professionnal and paid a lot of attention to the filtration and the optimal viscosity of the paint to have a spray as even as possible

Love this channel and all of the things you test and teach us about. I was wondering if this possible because all I have is a 6 gallon pancake compressor. I was very curious and here you are making a video of it. Makes me want to go get a POS car and try an paint it LOL.

Great video. I'm just beginning and I appreciate your explanations on how to get the best you can out of a small setup. I do have a question. What size hose are you using from the compressor to your gun? I was using a 3/8" hose and switched to a 1/4" hose and it helped my compressor when using other power tools. Would that help with painting?

I have a 24litre 9.6 cfm compressor here in the U.K.. I have some disabilities a painting a car is well beyond my physical capabilities but it’s great for staining and spraying a finish onto my small wood project and painting my attempts at fabrication (grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't). I can also run my small cut off wheel, die grinders etc. For me it’s a perfect size though if I was able bodied I'd look for at least 100 lites space permitting.

importance of videos like this is because 99.9% of viewers are not professional painters with tens of thousands invested in shop and equipment but regular people who has few tools in their garages and want to fix scratched bumpers. if i go to purchase just a big capacity compressor, it will cost me 10 times or more instead to go to the body shop and give it to them to do the job

I really appreciate your videos. I am learning a lot. They have given me the confidence to do the paint job on my car myself. I just need to finish w/ the rust repairs. I am more interested in these at home videos. Conditions, equipment and scenarios that the typical person watching your video will be working in. I especially like the product reviews and demos. I noticed this weekend that Harbor Freight now has a copy of the original 3M PPS system, called the SPECTRUM Universal Paint System. $19 for starter kit w/ total of 5 liners/lids. Adapters are $9 each. I would like to see you do a review of that system and comment on it. They also have a Braun Color Match Light for $39. In my price range vs the Sun Light. Once again, I do not know how it compares.

The key is to observe the air consumption of the gun with the air output of the compressor. This will let you know whether the compressor can keep up or not. And bear in mind that if the compressor is running constantly, than the chance for water forming in your lines increase. As the compressor pumps, air heats up from the compressor motor. As it travels through your lines it will cool down causing condensation to develop which can then come out as you spray.

@@PaintSociety maybe you should try it in V2.0 video with other adjustments, such as the .8 tip you mentioned and any other input you may find relevant Difference is very noticeable, pressure is kept for longer and the compressor does not cycle as often.

I used rubber seal 1 to 1 clear with a HVLP gun and 40 pounds of air to the gun and 10 pounds of air out . The clear came out like little balls but then leved out like a sheet of glass and didn't need to buff it for orange peel and I was using a 3/8 hose and fittings to make it a true HVLP gun . Try it . It will work great very low over spray and less wast . We sprayed 4 coats on a full car paint job and use only 2 quarts of paint and 2 quarts of clear doing that way
