It's a common practice, especially in Europe and other places where burial space is limited. It's not just a Catholic practice. I've seen bones dug up in cases where the payment wasn't made by the specified date. It puzzles me that the relatives of any deceased wouldn't make arrangements to pay for a grave after such a long time.

He didn't want a divorce, because she had inherited, land and money. She also had a life insurance policy. He needed all of that to carry on a new life. What a selfish, evil, beast.

A divorce would have cost him some money to obtain, if he got away with murder, he came out ahead with her inherited land, money, and life insurance policy. It's proof there is nothing new under the sun, for sure.

This story held me in rapt attention from beginning to end, although it was a very sad tale to listen to. Such disrespect of this lady both before and after death and her children having to live under the shadow of their father's deeds. He was a sadistic, selfish man and he got what he deserved in the end. That was excellent reporting, Ron and to read from contemporary newspaper articles just brings it all back to me. It's so sad that her grave cannot be located, thank you for leaving that rose as a remembrance.

Sometimes families will not use headstones in case they attract ghoulish types, which may be the case with outlandish stories such as this. You would think later generations would have placed some kind of simple marker though. My family is living in various countries of the World so I would probably never get to visit grandparents graves. I know where one is in the same country as I, but it is on the other side of the country. My father spent money to have his father’s grave marked with a permanent headstone etc. Grandfather had died young, but with four children and one stepchild to support his widow took them back home to her original country. She had already lost her original husband and one brother in France during WW1, before she had married grandfather, then lost a daughter while he had served in India. Her husband had a cross and a marker on his grave but time had almost obliterated these before my father had travelled there in his later years. He renewed the lease on the grave and hoped we would attend to any future needs there. I am yet to travel to that state and see if grandfather’s grave needs any attention. I do visit my father’s grave as it is close to home.

Chilling thought : Being that this happened in the late 1800's....the butcher could have just laid her on the floor, knocked over an oil lamp, or placed it too close the curtains, walked out.....and the house would have burned down. Not having the methods back then to investigate how the fire started like we do today etc., body found amid the ashes (well maybe skull and a few bones)....he might well have gotten away with it all. (Horrible accident). It is sad the wife has not even a marker.

I heard you say that there was a $500 insurance policy for Theresa. Wonder why her brother who would have either been the beneficiary or her children with him acting as their guardian didn't use that to bury her with a stone. RIP Theresa. Her husband got his due, that's for sure.

Thank you Ron for another interesting story, very sad that Theresa doesn’t have a marker. But thankfully you’ve brought her back in memory. A sideline: You talked about the German - Austrian families , made me think of how many 1000’s and 1000’s of the people immigrated, their broken language in America, trying to live and settle into a new country. I’m from central Missouri, where there were many many German immigrants that settled here in central Missouri on farms and in the cities.

Ron, I dont know if you've ever covered the place yet, however, if you haven't, I'd highly recommend the mutter museum in Philadelphia, PA. It's a museum of natural oddities and it lives up to that name. They even have an insanely eerie display of skulls that belong to murderers. If you're ever in the area, check it out. Well worth the p.o.a.

Wow, quite the intriguing story! Seems like the most brutal murders are in situations where someone could just get divorced, and instead plots evil. Poor Theresa 💔 not only died a horrible death but then put in the paupers section and now in some kind of mass grave. What about her brother- he should have followed up. Can't help wondering of Lena knew he was married before, I mean come on she must have heard at least from customers in the restaurant. Great job Ron, at least the FOTF gang can now remember poor Theresa ❤

Oh my stars! How incredibly sad! I’m going to take a small sidestep and feel sorry, too, for the (apparently) clueless lady who first thought he was single (I can truly see that happening - in his line of work he wouldn’t be wearing a ring), but to then find out he killed his wife to be with her! I wouldn’t want that on my conscience - to think he might have killed somebody as the solution to make way for a life with me. Dear heaven. 😮😮

Great story Ron. That is creepy that they just bury people on top of each other if the plot isn't paid for. It sounded like they gave them plenty of time to get it paid for though. I'm glad the husband was found guilty for what he did to her. It's sad that this woman was murdered by her husband, then she's been lost with no grave marker of where she lays. Thank you for taking the time to get these details & share this story with us.

So basically the church punished poor people for not being able to pay for a grave. And then think of their families enduring the anguish of knowing their loved one's remains would be desecrated. It 's so awful that anyone would ever think that was ok. That is tragic.

Hi RC! heres what I think about the one getting the death sentence over the one just thrown in prison, the one had a better lawyer than the other. Or may-be the one who got the death sentence caught the judge on a bad day, that's what you could call, slaughterhouse justice. Crimes committed; legal steps carried out!!!
