You beat this game the only way possible. Seriously, this game is just so awful! I'm glad I have never played it before. This speedrun indeed does improve how the game looks, but it was all tool assisted which is really the only way to get through such an awful video game. Watching the Angry Video Game Nerd's review of this really opened my eyes to how awful a simple sidescrolling game can turn out to be and he has reviewed so many awful video games.
