As someone who is trained in psychopharmacology, I can give my informed opinions as to what real-life drugs the _Fallout_ chems are, or might be, based on. 3:15 - Calmex is most likely based on alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine that is prescribed for severe anxiety disorders, such as agoraphobia, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. 4:15 - Daddy-O might be based on racemic amphetamine, specifically Benzedrine. Benzedrine was popular amongst beatniks during the 1950s. The racemic amphetamine was obtained from Benzedrine inhalers, which were intended to be used as a nasal decongestant. Beatniks would often wander around downtown streets in the middle of the night in a haze colloquially known as "Benzedrine indifference". 5:23 - Jet is referred to in-game as a "meta-amphetamine". In real-life, there are no such things as "meta-amphetamines", but when considering Jet's effects, we can reasonably conclude that pre-War Jet is methamphetamine. Post-War formulations invented by Myron come from brahmin dung, so perhaps brahmin dung has psychostimulant effects. Other variations, such as Ultrajet and Jet Fuel, are probably chemical analogues of regular Jet. 8:34 - Day Tripper could be based on any number of real-world psychedelic hallucinogens. I believe you are right with your opinion of it being psilocybin. 9:38 - Hydra's main ingredient comes from an unknown species of cave fungus, which may have some sort of naturally-occurring or radiation-induced anesthetic properties. Its effects remind me of ketamine. 11:09 - Med-X is canonically morphine. Morphine is an opioid derived from opium poppies, which are known for their analgesic and sedative properties when used clinically and their euphoriant, soporific, and anxiolytic properties when used recreationally. 12:16 - Steady is a tough one to speculate about. You suggested that it could be some sort of muscle relaxant (perhaps cyclobenzaprine), but its effects-drastically reduced gun sway and higher odds of hitting one's target when aiming-are more in line with ergogenics, which are performance-enhancing drugs sometimes used in sports. Alternatively, it could be an antispasmodic, which reduces muscle spasms and tremors, leading to less weapon sway. 13:22 - Rebound has a similar effect as Jet, so it is probably an analogue of methamphetamine. 14:23 - Mentats are either methylphenidate (Ritalin) or racemic amphetamine (Adderall), both of which improve cognitive performance and increase concentration. It could also simply be caffeine, which is a wakefulness-promoting agent and an analeptic. However, because the pre-War principal mentioned in the video felt that he needed to conceal the administration of the chem to school students, it is more than likely based on a scheduled substance, such as the aforesaid stimulants. 17:17 - Turbo's janky appearance and psychoactive effects lead me to think that it is based on some sort of cannabimimetic or synthetic cannabinoid, such as Spice or K2. 18:25 - Psycho most definitely fits the profile of a synthetic cathinone, seeing as how it simultaneously causes rage and analgesia. You say it is stated in one of the games as being an amphetamine, but I'm not aware of this ever being stated or implied by any of the games. 20:36 - Voodoo might be influenced by N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). DMT is a naturally-occurring hallucinogen in many animals' brains, including humans. Perhaps Voodoo is siphoned from animals' brains, which correlates with the in-game descriptive text. 21:43 - X-cell's futuristic appearance, amazing psychotropic effects, and research history make me think of some kind of nonexistent "super-drug". (The U.S. government has experimented with "super-drugs" for soldiers and pilots in real-life.) It is likely artificial or synthetic. Your explanation of epigenetics is a reasonable answer.

This is a little thing, but considering Turbo's appearance of being a spray can with Jet attached, and the use of turpentine to make it, I think it's more likely that Turbo is just a really nasty cross between amphetamine and a toxic aerosol like air duster. Air duster causes such severe brain cell death and intoxication when huffed that I think the slowed time effect makes sense.

22:01 I like your speculation on what it could be (combination of chemicals, epigenetic drug, etc.) but the blue ridges and brushed metal cylinders reminds me of the alien biogel/epoxy/power cells from Fallout 3's Mothership Zeta. The fact that they were in the "prototype" stage, as well as the fact that we know so little about them, could definitely hint at an alien origin, or at least an alien design/inspiration. It would not be the first time that the government was "inspired" by appropriated alien technology ("Alien technology was the basis of many of the Enclave’s more exotic and impressive weaponry and robotics," from Fallout 3's official game guide).

The definition of daytripper is someone who takes a trip that doesn’t last all night. Shrooms can last up to 6 hours true. Maybe more depending on dosage. LSD can last up to 8 hours which happens to be the amount of time a day is. So that would explain Daytripper. The Beatles made the song “Daytripper” which was created referring to LSD. Which was made in the late 60’s which would explain the 60’s Hippie flowers on the bottle. LSD was very popular in the 60’s. So I would say Daytripper most closely relates to LSD.

I mean even if the Jets are the same, there's no reason to think people weren't abusing meth pre-war (maybe it had a different name and probably had different ingredients) and then the little shit in FO2 realized the same thing pre-war people did(meth=addictive and inhaling is a good delivery method) and made a post-war version using different ingredients to create a similar effect. If this is the case it makes sense for a character only familiar with the post-war version to see the pre-war one and call it by its post-war name. I also want to say anyone getting mad about Bethesda retconning needs to look into the history of the games. Black Isle retconned in-game several times and on daily basis on their old forum. I mean 2 barely got released before they started reconning the "Vault-Tec was controlled by the Enclave and therefore they were responsible for the vaults" thing in a forum post (yet I see people getting angry and blaming Bethesda for that all the time). And then there's the whole cat thing, where cats are mentioned as very much being a thing in FO2, yet FNV(which was made by a lot of old Black Isles guys) claims they've been extinct since before 2(and once again its Bethesda who get blamed for retcon when all they did was undo a retcon). This is just to name a few, don't get me wrong Bethesda has retconned, but people acting like Black Isle was some sort of infallible game company with a solid never changing, never retconmed lore is laughable. Black Isles were the kings of video game retcons in a way Bethesda couldn't even dream of.

8:00 My guess is that people call the same drug in different regions. (Kinda like "elevator" in US, "lift" in UK. Or people in one region call it "soda" other region call it "pop") Since Turbo from Fallout New Vegas and Jet from Fallout 4 have the same effect of slowing down time, I guess that they are the same drug. People from different regions call it differently.

Panzerschokolade never existed, the Picture is just a Photoshop which becomes appearent quite quickly as the Company Zotte was founded in the late nineties. The was however Pervitin Tablets, which were simple Methamphetamine Tablets used to keep soldiers awake and battle ready for prolonged periods of time.

I really like your take on the Jet controversy. Another one I like is the potential that Jet wasn't as popular on the west coast pre war until Miron found some post war and reverse engineered it. Then he could have taken credit for its invention entirely.

6:05 I would think that it only slows down time from the players perspective. I'm imagining the real effect is to speed the player up which would make sense for its role in fallout 2 as in fallout 2 you used action points to move or shoot during combat meaning if you used jet and got more action points you would theoretically be moving/shooting quicker. This would also replicate the side effects that I've heard meth has. If my theory is correct I think it disproves your point at 8:24. I think the main issue is that Bethesda changed the role of action points without changing the effects of jet meaning jet should theoretically continue speeding the player up as it does in 2 and 4 but in 3 and new Vegas it simply doesn't because of the changes in roles.
@bacconiusursus56233 жыл бұрын
Love this video, especially the part about Jet being meth. It's perfectly reasonable for meth to be in the drug vault!

I think, there's little reason in looking into "expiration" of chems. You see, chems are WIDELY used and are known to be easily reproduceable, so there is a strong possibility that the packages (bottles, syringes, injectors and inhalers) are things that were reused dozens if not hundreds of times. Contents are new - packages are old.

Erm, a quick note that I don't *think* I saw anyone mention with a quick scroll down the comments. You said that Psycho ONLY increases Damage Resistance in FO3 and NV. It doesn't. It increases *Damage* but not Resistance. The Damage Resistance was brought back in FO4 and FO76, alongside varying levels of the Damage Increase introduced in 3. Seemed like a pretty glaring issue there.

Maybe Lorenzo Cabot's mysterious serum deserves its own speculation video. I can't see much point in explaining it using chemistry anyway. I guess it looks identical to FEV so that might be related? The aliens also make a ton of weird serums with random effects, then there's the girl on the spaceship who hasn't aged since she came into contact with their technology, a lot like Lorenzo with his hat. Maybe the aliens have something that stops kind of biological change like aging, keeping you identical to whoever you were when it first scanned you. Maybe FEV is the reason for all their recent activity. It's already the reason for practically everything else in Fallout so why not? Maybe the aliens played a part in FEV's creation. I think I remember US reverse-engineering alien technology to make something else as well. I also think Lorenzo's hat was planted by aliens to see if it would create an all-powerful god king and mess up human society. Maybe the aliens are just so generically written that they can be used to explain anything that us supposed to be beyond human understanding. Fuck 'em.
