Carlsen went quite close to winning this event, since he got the bronze medal in the previous World Cup. He lost his semifinal against Duda (who went on to beat Karjakin in the final match), and then proceeded to totally pulverize Fedoseev 2-0, winning both games with sublime positional and tactical brilliancy. Seriously, both of those games are among my favorite games ever.

It's grid locked enough to where one can reroute knight back to kick pieces with pawns generating long term pawn momentum with eye toward end game. It happens once every world championship cycle, so once every two years.
