South side of Chicago, me & Tanya went to Mr. Houston's store with about a dollars worth of pop bottles, ran up to 63rd & Ashland to the record shop, bought the 45 of Toby for .25 cents. Came back to our house down in the basement, played this song over & over until we learned all the words. Then we took turns singing the lead part. You couldn't tell us we couldn't sing (still can't). Memories of a wonderful childhood filled with music.

These "cat's" like the Whispers and a cavalcade of the rest of those wonderful groups during that anachronistic era. Were classy and utterly professional, and invariably at every turn out distance anything that they consider music today in my opinion.

I loved the Chi-lites their music left alot too your imagination, like this one. Toby was his childrens dog who got hit by a car. But you could think it was about a lover.
@MrNewktrane5 жыл бұрын
One of my all-time favorite songs! Five years young but I was already into listening to song lyrics. The way the great Eugene Record starts this song off in no way prepares you for the ending. But where in the lyrics do you pick up any reference to a dog?!........."I came home from spring vacation/expecting to find my Toby waiting/Called her on the private phone/She didn't answer, something was wrong/So I ran all the way to her house, and rang her bell/Her mother answered, and told me to come and sit a spell/".
@dannytennial53113 жыл бұрын
you're thinking about the Ojay"s Brandy song. This is about a girl he grew up with.
@stuartbrixton62603 жыл бұрын
Obviously not about a dog but the song may have been inspired by a dogs death
@jKLa2 жыл бұрын
@@stuartbrixton6260 it was inspired by a true story of a girl the lead singer and co-writer Eugene Record grew up with and was in love with as a young man, who passed away while they were apart. It's based on a true story of devastating loss which is why Eugene sounds so emotional and sincere while singing it.
@jKLa2 жыл бұрын
@@stuartbrixton6260 "The coldest days of my life" was also about the same young women, and her loss was an undertone/influence to many/most of the Chi Lites song's from back then in general. Eugene Record has talked about her in interviews.
