One of the best things about the Chibnall era was the way the theme for Gallifrey was introduced, the way the theme for Cybermen was introduced - and the way the cyber lords combined the motifs from the other two themes.

honestly, I really doubt it, I love Doctor Who, im a massive fan, this is my favourite show, but the Chibnal era is weak, I think The Flux season might get that treatment youre talking about because IMO its the strongest part of Chibnal's Who work, Dan gives the show the dynamism that it lacked with the small ammount of characterisation that the "Fam" got.

I've been going through the 13ths era after watching your re-write video. I will admit I used to be one of those "fans" that blindly hated it without seeing it. I'm almost at the end, I just finished the Flux episodes and I gotta say, she's great! Absolutely have loved it so much more than I ever could have imagined. Is it my favorite? Is it perfect? Both no. But is Jodie a great doctor? Absolutely! There was no doubt in my mind that the person I was watching was the Doctor and Bradley Walsh as Graham was perfect. He genuinely is up there for me for one of the best companions (I haven't watched classic who yet) I'm actually a little upset that it's about to end. I'm never listening to people online about that kind of stuff ever again (except maybe you)

I feel one of the reasons(atleast for me) to why people prefer murray gold is that the murray gold music is more fitting for doctor who due to the “bombastic(ness)” of it where it’s just over the top unlike segun akinola’s which is a bit chilled back. This doesn’t mean people don’t like some of murray gold’s music or love some of segun akinola’s music. Around about series 5 or 6 onwards there’s usually only 1 song(of similarly sounding songs)that I like whilst the others in that sane series I find a bit filler(y). Some of the songs I love are the heaven sent track or “am I a good man?” music but then others are just kind of boring, and I can’t list them hear because I forgot them. Songs by segun that I like are the master’s them and “she’s the doctor”, especially when we hear “she’s the doctor” in Jodie’s regeneration scene. I’d personally say that her regeneration scene(just by looks atleast) is the best. The way she’s standing on the cliff with the beautiful sunset and regeneration stuff, then the music added on top just makes it even better. Also, I am a flux lover though the ending was really annoying since I was loving it then they just absolutely fell off a cliff in the final episode 😭

Okay I’m now 36 minutes into the video and you really put this video out at a great time because I’m currently in Series 11 of my regular Doctor Who rewatch, and I’m strongly considering going straight ahead to Flux and then coming back and picking up where I left off after Demons of the Punjab (which is one of the greatest episodes of Doctor Who ever, I might mention) Then you offhandedly mention “Can You Hear Me?”, and I just have to say: I freaking adore that episode. It’s so bizarre, feels very kind of ‘70s Marvel comic book-esque when all the writers were on drugs and every storyline had a living planet in a trippy alternate dimension. And the monologue explanation near the end was set to actual animation, reminds me strongly of Tegan’s dream sequences from Kinda. It’s so good!

While I'm personally not *super* crazy about series 11 or 12, I do really enjoy series 13, and totally get why other people love this era! The Flux is my 2nd fav series, after Moffat's final series. -The Halloween Apocalypse: thrilling bombastic episode-long trailer for the series to come. -War of the Sontarans: A quality blast, with such pleasingly damp visuals. -Once, Upon Time: One of the only pieces of media I've seen that genuinely feels like a dream. The only other one I can think of is The Edge of Destruction. Sensational unique episode. -Village of the Angels: The worst of the series by far. Claire becomes boring, but it consolidates the previously established powers of the angels nicely. Many merits, perfect cliffhanger, but the twist about the old woman/little girl just feels weak. -Survivors of the Flux/The Vanquishers: An abolsute blast. Not the most satisfying conclusion but the ride is a joy.

I can think of plenty of favorites (Gridlock, Fires of Pompeii, A Good Man Goes to War, the Girl Who Waited, Mummy on the Orient Express, A Christmas Carol, Thin Ice, and Demons of the Punjab come to mind) where I never thought they needed to be any longer than they were, barring maybe a scene or two.

One thing I can’t understand is why thasmine was only brought in halfway through eve of the daleks when you’ve got 2 and a bit more episodes left to explore it. If they’d started dropping hints through out flux and then confirmed it at the end of the series, you’d have the 3 episodes to fully delve into it. Maybe in eve they’re really trying to show their love for each other, L*gend of the s*eadevils something goes wrong, power of the doctor, they realise it’s impossible and part ways on good terms. But no it’s just brought up like 3 times, they don’t kiss, nothing happens.. I’m mad

Oh my rewatch, i feel like there are hints in series 12 and 13 before eve of the Daleks. But there’s no dialogue acknowledgement. In the haunting of Villa Diodatti, there’s a moment where Yaz sits on the floor and she’s clearly taking about her feelings for the Doctor. In Flux, it’s not very overt and I only noticed it on rewatch bc of Eve of the Daleks (and episodes after) but the amount she rewatched the hologram and yearns for the Doctor silently seems to be a hint. They’re aren’t very overt/they coulda done way more with it earlier for sure though

Chibnall's "characters" were so paper-thin that people were desperate to imbue them with any kind of traits or personality. Bereft of any ideas of his own, of course Chibnall was going to cave in to pressure from viewers thinking they saw something between the Doctor and Yaz. I admit it was a nice scene between Yaz and Dan in Eve of the Daleks (one of the better episodes of the era)... but after that Yaz's feelings were given token lip service in the (frankly, utterly abysmal) Sea Devil episode until she was unceremoniously dumped in Power of the Doctor. In trying to give any of these characters any interesting traits it was too little, way too late.

I'm a huge fan and defender of Flux, and the finale is unironically one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes. The finale is extremely fast-paced and doesn't resolve some things as cleanly as I'd like (if at all, hello "fate of the entire universe"), but it's just an unbridled joy to watch from start to finish in my opinion. Jodie is probably at her best in her entire run; the multiple Jodies interacting with each other is *so much fun* . Having the entire assorted cast come together was kinda iconic. And I honestly think the resolution to varying problems is better than most Doctor Who resolutions, which are almost all varying degrees of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. And I'm probably the one person on the planet who apparently didn't have trouble following along in the final episode; I loved how fast-paced it was and I didn't struggle to keep up. The entire thing was *incredibly* ambitious and daring, introduced the best characters of the Chibnall era, had absolute *banger* individual episodes, had great villains, and constantly kept you on your toes. Like you I also really love Once, Upon Time, for the same reasons you mentioned in the video. I think it might be the most underrated episode of the Chibnall era. Probably the only episode I don't particularly like is episode 5; the entire Yaz/Dan/Jericho subplot is a complete waste of time and there's no real central element propelling it forward. Yes, it's flawed in multiple respects, but Doctor Who is *always* flawed; how much you like an era is probably mostly going to come down to how much the flaws of the era bother you, and I personally find the flaws easy to overlook, in Flux and in the Chibnall era in general. If I had my way, Flux would be the blueprint for Doctor Who going forward. From what little we've seen, series 14 to me looks like a big step backwards, but maybe I'll end up being proven wrong on that front.

Name a story. I will be objective as to what worked and what fell flat. Chibnall's era is a mixed bag but it's not as trash as people have said. (Legends of the Sea Devils was good story with some choppy editing. Not a deal breaker. The pting episide wasn't sure of what it wanted to do thanks to in-story inconsistency, sonic screwdriver overuse, and how it "reboots" (technobabble was a semi-recurring problem). But I will defend the pseudohistoricals, for which Chibnall's are generally the best and most innovative of the modern era. I wish more would listen to dwfan91's review of Chibnall's era. DiamandaHagan's as well.

I like the chibnall era alot, it has its own feeling which I can appreciate. I like to be hopeful but one thing im a little unhopeful about for the new era is the tone. Every new rtd episodes feels like more of the same stuff he was doing years ago, which doesn't really work for me considering the point of bringing on new show runners was to prevent the show getting stale. Just a note about the male and female characters on the show: While there has almost always been a female companion as a main character, before the revival, they had a real tendency to become damsels in short skirts who needed the Doc to explain everything to them. As one companion actress put it, "They lose all the things that made them unique after a while." Making the Doctor a woman means you've got to work way harder to diminish a female character because she's your lead hero now, not just the supporting character. Also, companions are audience surrogates which creates a temptation to make them flat so the audience can project themselves onto them. You can't make the Doctor flat no matter how hard you try. Edit: As a personal anecdote, while I'll watch a Doctor of any gender, my mom only started watching because the Doctor was a women. Before that, she saw it as a boys show that wasn't for her. Once she saw 13 and loved her, mom was willing to go and watch the previous Doctors and she loved them too, but it took seeing a woman in the lead for her to give it a try.

I liked series 11 when I watched it but ended up skipping series 12 and 13. I watched KZbin videos about them to see what I missed which were generally negative. But when I started watching your videos I went back and actually watched what I missed and ended up liking most of it. Now in hindsight those KZbin videos I watched say a lot of stuff I don't really get after seeing it myself. I think people can still dislike that era of the show, but I wish disliking it wasn't treated as just the default as much. Actually, reading the critic and audience reviews for Chibnall era episodes on rotten tomatoes is very revealing.

Okay, finally finished the video (thank you for getting me through my stressful day at work!) and I loved it. Great video. One thing I want to say is that I think there’s something to enjoy in every single modern episode of Doctor Who. Even the bad ones. In Fear Her, we get things like the Doctor parking the Tardis sideways between shipping containers so he can’t get out, and has to re-park it. In Love & Monsters, Ursula is precious, Elton’s just a sweet guy, and the LINDA crew feel so wholesome and cozy. In Nightmare in Silver, I’d say Porridge is one of the best characters in the entire series, and I wish we got to see more of him, just an incredibly likable guy. In Orphan 55, I love the dynamic between Ryan and Bella (who looks fantastic, by the way). In Legend of the Sea Devils, you said it yourself, there was that great scene at the end between Yaz and the Doctor, but I also thought that Dan was just great the whole way through, I loved him wearing the stupid pirate costume, and the one who played Madame Ching did a great job (and also looks fantastic, by the way).

My main issue with the Chibnell era is I never found myself endured to the characters. I didn’t dislike them, but the emotional connection just wasn’t there. There are things to enjoy but without that connection it doesn’t go very deep.

Public opinion is fleeting and flexible, people genuinely like Terminator Salvation, Star Trek Enterprise, and the Star Wars prequels these days. I really like Jodie as the Doctor she's very comforting. She brings the warmth of the 3rd and 10th Doctor's that I really liked, as well as the playfulness of the 2nd and 11th. If I had to take a guess as to why people say it's "bad writing," I think it's just a difference in writing style. 13 doesn't get big Moffat style speeches like 12, 11, and even 10 did. Also, because of the "flat team structure" She doesn't get as many big bombastic, "I alone am the hero moments" like 9-12 got on occasion. It gives her Doctor a more mellow feel and I think that might be what they're noticing. That, and sometimes the directing was a little off so maybe that's it? Idk.

I just realise something... we got news like, oh new composer for this one. and because of that people will be like "We want Gold!" But then, those who will binge watch it, will be like, don't even realise it's a new composer unless someone mentioned it~ so yeah... The fact that, my favourite episode of Doctor Who, is It Takes You Away... says something... The Doctor being a woman makes a big difference to me. Having a somewhat important character be trans makes a big difference to me. Having Ncuti's Doctor dancing super queerly in a club makes a big difference to me. Having characters of the same demographics as me makes a massive difference. Of course I can relate to characters who aren't much like me... but it is genuinely special and transformative to be able to see myself onscreen, especially when it's a rare thing. Idk how much Jodie being a woman is what makes her my favourite Doctor nowadays, but it's definitely a significant factor. It nourishes my soul.

1:18:31 Eve of the Daleks is my MOST WATCHED holiday special which is. insane. but its just so fantastic i dont even know. i might have to make a video talking about it and how much i appreciate every aspect of it. the comedic antics and the characters we get are charming and i love it so much. dan with the daleks, the thasmin relevation, the story with the two people and their personalities, a TIME LOOP storyline!!! idk it just does so many things right for me, a ton. it gave us 2 side characters fully immersed into the narrative and its purpose and the writing/acting of them made me genuinely care about them?? cant say that about most holiday specials characters. but yeah! i might make a video about this one day who knows

As a relatively new fan of doctor who, opposing opinions on doctor who is a part of the fandom I really enjoy . I’ve been in fandoms in the past where headcanons, episode likes, and dislikes have had a sorta ‘fandom consensus TM’ label on them. Therefore, having opposing ideas or criticisms felt a bit taboo. I like the ability of doctor who fans to have their own opinions, have their own reasonings, and enjoy the show in their own way. It makes me feel like I’m able to enjoy the show in my own way too. Additionally, I like that doctor who fans are able to give the show criticism. I enjoy being able to watch videos like this one and hear different ideas than what I might be used to. It’s really gotten me out of the mindset that I need to watch shows that are ‘good’ either morally or in quality. Every era of doctor who has its ups and downs and I’m able to enjoy or critique them in my own way. I’ve been wanting to watch a video like this for a while, not because I’m particularly a chibnall era fan, but because I enjoy hearing the other side of things. So thanks for making this 👍

im glad you immediately started with a defense of segun akinola. murray gold is a legend and a huge inspiration to me but his music is very Blockbuster Film Score. im not a fan of the chibnall era in general, but i always thought akinola's music was fitting for the tone that it takes, not to mention 13's opening title theme is one of the best the series has had

One of the biggest mistakes of chibs era is the timeless child it would have made made way more sense given how he always comes back and survives and we no little about his past for it to be the master it would explain why the master is mad and evil while keeping the mystery of the doctor intact

The thing I took from Chibnall's era is it is very distinct, for better or for worse. I think though it's nicely distinct. From its visuals, it's storytelling, direction, and music. Is it my era? No. Moffat's era is my cup of tea but there are things I do like about his era and I do own episodes on Amazon that I watch. I recently finished Flux again. An aspect that makes me curious is when history repeats itself, because it will eventually. When RTD and Murray Gold leave again and move on to new projects and a new production team rolls on in will the fandom be difficult or will they be more accepting the second time around. A part of me wants to be optimistic but I suspect it'll be the other way around.

If people who find Flux confusing or convoluted, which to be fair it is slightly due to having so many moving plot points and events in just six episodes, then I hope they're prepared if they ever watch ghost light. I'm saying this as someone who enjoys both stories by the way.

having rewatched the era i think i agree it was ok, and not bad. however here are some things to note, as soon as u watch it after watching all of rtd and moffats era u can see the change in the filming where the camera points at one person then the doctor then the other person, it may seem jarrying at first but u can get used to it, the second thing you'll notice is damn theres an awful lot of exposition with not much action like it was in the classic era so if you grew up with only modern doctor who u may find yourself not liking this right away or even bored. 3rd lets come to the arcs, the timeless child and the flux, they were written as plot points and we moved on to the next just like arcs that happened before, bad wolf, saxon, and so on. were they written well id say its subjective to the viewer . 4th, the 13th doctor, people either say shes trash or say shes the best, i dont either fits, i think shes an ok doctor , she was written to be more timid and shy less open then others, more struggling to find her voice, now that may be also due to the actress as well idk all i know is when the hunting of villa diodati happened and i saw her get actually mad for once and express that she as the doctor sees things more from a mountain perspective i immedatly thought wow wish we could have more of that kind of writing that was awesome. overall era not bad but there are things that could of made it really good. overall people need to separate their political beliefs with tv shows and movies. not everything u see in one is gonna align with your views and thats a good thing but one line of dialogue here and there doesnt have to spoil the whole thing for said person if they dont let it.

Not related to this specific video, but I've been binging your channel today because I just found it and like your content. A consistent issue I'm having is that the background music for most of the videos is too loud. It tends to drown out your voice in some cases and distract from your words in others. I think everything else you're doing is great, I just sometimes have to rewind a bit to catch something you said over the music in places.

Haven't watched all of the video yet, (will be returning later) but I have to say, Flux was definitely my favourite of Thirteen's tenure. The energy is great and I just find War of the Sontarans and Village of the Angels excellent to watch. Dan is great, 13 and Yaz have a stronger dynamic, Segun's music is more "in your face" which I personally prefer. If Series 13 had an easier production it could have made for a stellar series. But even as it is, it's a really fun watch with a large cast of likeable characters

Only just got through the music section, but as someone who isn't as fond of this era, I'd like to leave my honest experience with its music. Sorry if it's a little long or rambly, more of a stream of consciousness lol Standing by themselves, there's a good handful of Segun's themes that are not just good, but fantastic. Many here have said, and it's been proven in the video, that his Master theme kinda puts Murray's to shame, and fits Dhawan's Master very well. The Doctor's theme really evokes this kind of tender watchfulness and wonder that I think works well for the overall character of The Doctor. And I remember getting hit by the new opening theme for the first time and thinking "damn this feels cool." But upon rewatching some of the scenes where these great themes were used, for me personally, the tracks don't fit as well. The Dalek theme feels more like it was written for an action movie than to represent an overwhelmingly powerful genocidal alien race. The Doctor's theme would be far better if it felt like it fit 13's character better, but being that's she's characterized as often being accidentally careless, a bit spastic, and a consistent force for change, I'd have liked to hear those themes explored more in her theme. I don't want to jerk Murray off here because occasionally he drops something that doesn't to what it should, but I feel like I Am the Doctor is the pinnacle of this, because it feels so 11th Doctor that it's hard to hear it played for any other incarnation. I think a lot of people criticize Segun being more "ambient" or :atmospheric" because a lot of his tracks, especially in series 11, lean toward more consistent, drawn out tones to set a main theme, with a simpler beat/build up for scenes where the tension rises. They're simple, they're not there to carry a scene like Murray's were. And for me, in scenes where I wasn't exactly invested in the characters, the music made it feel more empty. Doctor Who under Murray Gold felt like a story where I was told exactly who and what a character or scene was through the score, and under Segun it feels more akin to being lightly guided there but ultimately left to answer some of those questions myself. And that's really weird to me, because on the flipside, it felt like when non-character, situational tracks were used, especially during speeches or important moments, they were used to heighten the drama or feel, and because I often wasn't invested in the drama that had been set up, they felt more as if they were trying to manipulate me into feeling a certain way without the actual scene really doing the same. I'd be curious to hear how the soundtrack worked from someone who was more invested in the characters from the beginning. I definitely plan on going back to rewatch series 11-13 to see if I still feel this way.

I agree that there has been a lot of negativity surrounding the Chibnall era. However, upon second viewing, I have noticed that many of the episodes from Season 11, such as Ghost Monument, Rosa, and Demons of Punjab, are very good. Season 12 also has some great episodes, except for Orphan 55 and Praxeus. I think Flux is a great series and I don't know why people dislike it so much. In my opinion, every season of the show got better and I think Flux is the best series that Chibnall made. Although it could have used an extra episode, overall it was fantastic.
