Chorus:
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and I don't have time
To go 'round and 'round and 'round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'Cause I'm mad as hell, can't bring myself
To do what it is you think I should

The album sold pretty well, but the tour was not successful. The whole Bush controversy really did kill their arena status, unfortunately, and they’ve never recovered. Which is really sad because touring is an artists main source of income these days. Watch Shut Up and Sing. Tells the whole story, pretty heartbreaking. The dumbest part of it all is that the same idiots who cancelled the chicks are the very people who are whining about cancel culture today

@@rodneyhendrix2450 please please preach louder. See people don't understand their actions have consequences that's why I told this other lady at the store I was like why was it okay back in the early 2000s for a lot of Republican country fans to cancel the Dixie Chicks for their expression of freedom of speech but now look at the flip side. People learn from from their older constituents. And because a lot of people back then made stupid decisions it's the reason why people think they can bully Kanye West for being a trump supporter simply because he's a black man and hip hop. It's so childish no matter what music genre you're in you have the right to speak your opinion if you're an artist or not. I don't believe in if you're Entertainer your freedom of speech as a citizen should be taken away and you should just entertain people and act like a robot absolutely not. The Dixie Chicks did not deserve that and I'm a big fan of them because they spoke out when it was unpopular nowadays everybody just wants to be cool and woke and yes woke culture is annoying but back then it was different. Them people lost a lot but they gained a lot because today and 2022 we can look back and say those people were wrong. You have the right natural support of artists if you don't agree with her talking points but there was no need to burn CDs to try to ruin that careers call news stations to not get their music played send death threats all of that was extra

I agree, and I was one of the ones who threw my cd out the window. Whether it was an overreaction is debatable and largely depends on one's viewpoint. But at the end of the day, any person should know their customer base. The Dixie Chicks, as country musicians, should have known that a majority of their fans base would take an insult towards the man they elected President in a bad way.

You know where that "death threat" letter came from? A DJ, friendly to the DC's allegedly forwarded it to them. The only fingerprints found on the letter were the DJ's and the Dixie Chicks. No one was ever considered a suspect regarding the letter, and both the FBI and Arlington/Dallas police let them have their concert anyway. Dallas, a location where one very well known POTUS and a Governor were shot, wouldn't sit idly by and let them have a concert if a death threat was considered legit..it wasn't, but it cost the taxpayers millions in heightened security just in case. The DC's owe Arlington, Dallas, and the nation as a whole for the farcical attempt at painting themselves as victims.

I’m a woman and never experienced that but then again I’m decent, mindful and not to dramatic. I also believe politics is best left exactly the way we vote, in secret. The only people that need to talk about their political leanings are the ones that have to brainwash idiots to follow along through intimidation and bullying. I would rather people think than listen to others like a bunch of Lemmings. As a matter of fact I feel nothing but embarrassment and pity when people go off the wall over politics because it reveals a level of immaturity on their part,

Lina C. Agreed but that used to happen with mutual respect for the people to express why they feel the way they do with information and facts to support those feelings. They may have disagreed but at the end of said discussion they were mature enough to put it aside and go on with their friendship. Now we live in a culture that operates like a mob with a “if your not with us your against us mentality.” That will never be ok with me. You cannot have a discussion when it’s only one point of view being allowed free reign while the other side is canceled by name calling and bullying. When people are friends they should be for so many more reasons than politics. When people stop being friends because of politics then they weren’t really friends to begin with. It’s a closed boring existence and should never be allowed to have taken a foothold in our country.
@yaycookiz

Lin A I almost completely agree with you, and especially that there is not a need to be disrespectful towards others. But sometimes politics is not trivial, and overlaps with issues of morality in which it is fair to question a relationship. If someone does not respect the human rights of others for example, I can see why it would be difficult to maintain a friendship.

Man I was just sitting here thinking. You know hindsight is 20/20 and it’s easy to look back and see things clearly when you’re reflecting 20 years later. Wanna know who history has redeemed probably more than anyone? The Dixie Chicks/The Chicks. The Iraq war was a colossal mistake by pretty much every reasonable measure. They knew this way before anyone else and weren’t afraid to say it. It may have cost them in the short run but in my opinion history has more than redeemed them. I’m gonna try to go to one of their shows the next time they tour. They had a show in my town last year but I was stuck at work. Would love to see them in person.

@Brian Dahlen Appropriately named..Gaslighter. They've been doing that for nearly two decades now, Gaslighting the public. Read the playlist...many are the tunes they originally recorded. They finally had to give credit for writing to the original songwriters on the rest, but you can see where they laid claim to "songwriting" wherever they could. Four days in, and Itunes had them at #1 for a day. Seems despite creating thousands of online accounts to request their new song, they got a one day blip there. You see, itunes list is developed from both actual sales and play requests with 100 spins equaling 1 sale on all major platforms. They have an easier time recruiting others to create multiple accounts in Canada, so expect it to be a raging chart hit there for a while. Even I can write a script to get on multiple accounts and repeatedly request and play any tune over and over again. I would not be surprised if the DC's spent the last year or so lining up any recruits they could to start repeatedly spinning the song. It's not doing so well on any other charts. I do expect that Sony (tho they aren't connected now, but were big time in the 90's), being the big dog at the table at RIAA, will be issuing a Gold award prematurely as they did when the DC's were on top of their game. I'm sure you WILL like it, as it contains a lot of old material.

I dont understand how they can get so much backlash on one little comment, but i never knew anyone to say anything nice about george bush? I think that is why Natalie is so upset, and still upset till this day. She was right just noone else had the balls to admit it and country music is all about americana so i think in all honesty it was just country diehards that rejected and called the girls out. Just because whats country music without beer and american flags? If she was making music in any other genre she would have been fine. Natalie felt betrayed by the country music community... I dont blame her. This is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard natalie is a beautiful singer and honestly she has too much depth to her then to be locked down to stereotypes and the country mudic genre. These girls are beautiful inside and out. And they are raw so real they make you feel something you dont see that all the time country music... Well you rarely do in fact

She wasn't "right" about anything. She was pandering to a largely anti war crowd at Shepherds Bush in England, and she got called on that by the very fan base that made them A list entertainers in the first place. They subsequently wrecked their future careers by doubling down on their pandering, trying to turn it into a sincere sentiment. People at the time weren't fooled by this. Maines herself had 3 national TV appearances during the year long runup to that war. Did she say anything then? NO. Ever before at any other place or time before Shepherd's Bush? NO. She was pandering, and nothing more.

We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." How brave they are to stand up for the peace, because we know that the revenge to each other will never end. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Chicks

@galenwarren3579
@galenwarren3579 4 жыл бұрын
Shut up and Sing was wholly produced BY the DC's and part of a three year propaganda campaign to sell a narrative. That narrative being that somehow, their precipitous fall from grace with their original fan base, their loss in popularity and profit, was an infringement on their "rights". No entertainer has an inalienable right to popularity or profit. The highlighted segments of negative reaction by their original fans is presented as if the entire nation were burning and crushing their CD's in protest. In fact, only one instance of a bunch of high school kids burning their C&W CD's in lieu of their rock CD's at a party in the country is what they have. They showcase reporters who misreported what was going on. Example, the radio station that, according to the reporter, "Put out these trash cans so people could throw away their DC CD's". ONE trash can, and they had to get one of their own staff to throw some CD cases into that practically empty trash can for the shot. "Crushing their CD's with a bulldozer" is quoted in the movie. In fact, it was a publicity stunt by the local C&W station that provided the CD's and....wait for it... a small garden tractor. The only crowd they had for it were the reporters themselves. Multiple shots were taken of Maines' expressing "concern" over what was happening in the war. ALL of them occurred AFTER the blowup over her Shepherds Bush comment and staged to make her look like a concerned citizen. She had THREE nationally broadcast appearances on US television during the year long runup to the war. Did she say anything about her concern? No. She was in front of a largely anti war crowd in London (that just had an anti war march through town) when she pandered at that pre tour show. Things they left out of the movie; The DC's stopped the refunding of tickets for their concerts after the blowup. Something any other entertainer wouldn't dare attempt. They claimed "co-writing" credits for every song on their next album that included Shut Up and Sing, robbing the real, well established song writers of half their share of profits. A band that had produced no more than TWO original songs in the previous 14 years suddenly can write an entire album of great songs? Give me a break. You've been had if you believe that propaganda piece was anywhere close to the true backstory on the DC's.

Try to find more, and don't hand me some reporter's comment, as they've gotten it wrong repeatedly. The DC's stopping refunding? Call any venue they played on that tour. This was public knowledge. The three national broadcasts? Easily found with a google of Natalie Maines. Stealing writing credits? Look at all their albums. They list the writers of the songs. They even out themselves over "Not Ready to Make Nice". Dan Wilson wrote the song, and was only given subject and theme by the girls. They took credit as "authors" for that. Google is your friend.

Galen Warren every artist writes with a team. Check our most songs, a long list of names for who wrote it. Taylor Swift might be an exception for example, but most artists have a team of songwriters and producers. There is no “I” in TEAM ya know ;)

@@galenwarren3579 Where did you hear that regarding "Not Ready to Make Nice?" Everywhere I read says they co-wrote the song, and that's what Dan Wilson himself says too in videos where he talks about it. I'm curious as to your source for that claim.

@@chadjohnson-authormusician8072 Listen to the conversation that both Dan and Nat describe. Dan asks if the song should possibly have a line or two that gives them an out of the hard line, "not ready to make nice", and Nat says absolutely not...but beyond that, they don't publicly discuss the alleged co-writing that went on for that song. Even the sisters outed their "co-writing" by saying how wonderful it was to work with such talented people and that all they had to do is express what they wanted the songs to say, and these "wonderful people" made it happen. However, you only need to look at the history of the DC's (and the industry) to understand why this is absolute bogus that the DC's co wrote those songs on that album. Just prior to that album, it was determined by mutual agreement within the industry, that song writers are due a percentage of sales on a song in addition to a one time payment like they received before. The DC's with Sony at their back, insisted on co writing credits as a prerequisite to having their work on the DC album to raise the DC's share . All they had to do was submit a theme and talk over the results with the many well established songwriters, and EVERY public statement about that album supports this. A bit like cake tasters after the real baker chefs had cooked. To further support the notion that they didn't write these songs, consider their history. They wrote two, count them, two songs in the decades' long history of the band and the multiple albums they put out prior. How likely is it, that after all that time and doing nothing but cover tunes written by others, that they could come up with a complete album where they were "songwriters"? That's not a switch you throw on, suddenly. Oh, you might have ideas, but to suddenly burst forth with that many? For every song, there is a real, well known professional songwriter on the credits. Given the disingenuous history of the DC's the needle swings toward the BS mark.

Usually, I'm afraid to watch videos of songs when I like the original recording/video so much already. This was such a surprise, from the opening notes. It got better and better as it went along and when the denoument arrived I thought they would falter. But they didn't. Message sent and received beautifully. Awe inspiring.

so excellent to see skilled, talented artists doing what artists used to do: -provoke discussion -call-out the liars -stand up for what they believe in When I was a kid that is what all artists did. And, shame on the music industry for buckling to the bigots, racists and halfwits and letting them dictate the narrative and letting these girls take on the world alone.
