The Kansas City Chiefs defense has completely changed, and they are now a top 10 unit. After losing Tyreek Hill, and several other key defenders, the Chiefs decided they needed to change. While starting 4 rookies, they decided to overhaul their defense and use the highest percentage of split safety coverages of any team in the last 5 years. The results have been super bowl worthy, so how does their defense work, and do they have a chance against the Eagles? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the Kansas City Chiefs defense.

If we can just draft a good edge rusher, we would be in business. Karlaftis isn't bad, but he has a long way to go to 'be that guy' we need. @Andrew Fung I wouldn't say they have a lot of good players. They just don't have bad players. They are a bunch of average performing players with the exception of Sneed and Jones. Sometimes, those average players come up big when it matters. Other times, they are just average, and it shows. People need to remember how young the defense is. They were battling injuries early and were still trying to figure out what personnel to use when. It took them until just recently to actually put all their starters on the field AND put them in the positions they fit best. They are still not a great defense, regardless what anyone might say. They are just good enough, if that makes sense. They don't have to be incredible for KC to win. They need to do just enough to keep the game close.

@@theartistformerlyknownasth8612 On the contrary it plays right into the defense hands like the talk in Philly because we know and still adore Andry Reid, but he's gonna throw the ball, and Eagles defensive line is kicking their chops at the idea of being able to pin their ears back and just get after it. Usually great running teams like the Giants and 49ers are sacked less because you gotta hedge for the run, but when you know for certainty there will be no runs then you don't have to hedge. Chiefs shaky tackles gotta deal with the freaky athletic Reddick and Sweat off the edge who combined for 28 sacks this year, and Chiefs all pro center will be occupied with a nose tackle like Jordan Davis, N Suh or Linvel Joseph while that NT is flanked by dt/de Fletcher Cox and Hargreaves who combined for 18 sacks during season with Milton Williams who had 5 switching in. Eagles rush 5 every play and let they're all pro DBs Darius Slay, Bradberry and Gardner Johnson make plays on the back end. For Chiefs to win Mahones is gonna have to have the performance of a lifetime which he is certainly capable of. But there will be no quarter.

A lot of that has to do with the Chiefs offense as well. Teams want to limit KC's possessions, so they try to be slow and methodical. However, playing that way is also risky. One mistake and a possession is basically over. The Chiefs defense is going to have to bring the heat. Their front four isn't going to be enough to pressure Hurts. Adversely, the Eagles are fine running every play; which is something KC's defense has always struggled with. They are going to need to bring the heat and play downhill. That means those young DBs are going to be on islands. If Hurts is still throwing like he did against the 49ers, KC will be fine. If Hurts is back to his old form, expect a potential blowout. KC's offense is battling a lot of injuries, and the Eagles pass defense is good. Their run defense isn't great, but neither is KC's run offense. On paper, the Eagles are the perfect counter to KC. We will see if that holds true, though. What makes it worse is the head ref for the game has a long history of penalizing KC excessively. I think it was something like 20-25% of their penalties this year alone were from that head ref.

Well when you said "Devoid of superstar talent." I immediately thought "What about Nick Bolton? What about Willie Gay? What about Sneed?" I mean Bolton is only in his second year but has been a beast in the Linebacking group and honestly deserved a Pro Bowl appearance this year
@faveology
@faveology Жыл бұрын
Willie Gay is overrated. He is great at position, but his tackling is so piss poor. I am a mega KC fan and watch all their games. That dude would have the RB dead to rights and just whiff. Bolton is a beast, though, but his athleticism sometimes hurts him. He will be slightly late to the gap or slightly late in his drop, and the result is giving up plays that shouldn't have happened. However, the plays where Bolton's athleticism aren't an issue, he is an absolute man amongst boys. Sneed is great as well. The only DB who consistently comes up and isn't afraid to make a tackle. He's pretty damn solid in coverage, and his blitzes are always so well done. I wouldn't call him a star by NFL standards, but he is definitely a star on the KC defense. I think that's what the guy who made the video is saying though. KC's only true superstar by NFL standards on defense is Chris Jones. Sneed, Bolton, Gay, McDuffie, etc. are bright spots, but mainly just bright spots for the KC defense. When you compare them to other players at their positions in the NFL, they aren't superstar talent.

Considering that most base looks devolve to a form of nickel defense post snap anyway (especially on late passing downs), the differences aren't a huge deal. What matters more is how the DC tends to play the coverage and if they have certain depth talent to change things up for match ups. Besides having that nickel corner to offset against the slot, some teams employ a 3rd safety who can cover for matchups.

I have been watching this year's defense a lot from game 1, and I have been impressed with them all year! Yes, they give up a big play every so often, but damn their crew of rookies in secondary are playing their asses off every game. I'm not a huge stats/ratings guy for defenses. I think sometimes they are over blown, and don't always tell the whole story. The most points they have given up this year was 31 to the Brady & the Bucs. I think folks are looking past this defense. Dallas has the number one offense when Dak got back according to the numbers this season. But it’s not just Dakota. It’s his O-Line, Running Backs, Recievers, His TE. So that’s something right. Let’s not talk about the Vikings as they are trash their offense was pretty good their defense is where they sucked at. But against that offense with not just Kirk Cousins on it. With the best receiver this season JJetas, a good running back in Dalvin Cook, a decent O-Line. We showed up did we not? Okay let’s talk about that Giants game In the playoffs who people said Philly we’re gonna lose to coming off that game against Minnesota. Philadelphia defense showed up against that “Hot Giants offense”. Against the 9ers. Philadelphia Defense showed up and don’t you dare say that Brock was gonna win that game with the pressure we were gonna apply to him all game if he did continue to play. Sure Mahomes is a better QB than all of those guys by far but this just ain’t about what Mahomes can do…Saying Mahomes is gonna beat our defense himself is ridiculous. But hey if you think the Chiefs defense is gonna show up more then Philly than that’s you. I hope the Chiefs defense can keep up with Philly offense because we know Philly damn sure can keep up with the Chiefs offense. The Chiefs don't look past anybody, but they're still looking ahead. Spags stuck those rookies on some islands and let them take their lumps all year. They might've been better with vets everywhere, at the start, but they stuck with it, and the rookies aren't rookies any more. The last month or two, they've been adding new wrinkles with their now-experienced rookies. I'll be surprised if KC runs much split safety before the 4th quarter.

“This defense doesn’t have superstar talent other than Chris Jones”. I do believe L’Jarius Sneed would have something to say about that lol. With the improvement of both 1st Round Picks from this Draft in Karlaftis (5.5 sacks in the last 7 Regular Season Games, 3rd in the whole NFL in Batted Down Passes at the LOS) and McDuffie as well as Bolton having the 2nd most Tackles in the NFL those guys are well on their way as well. Far higher base level of talent than most people realize or expect…

Nah eagles are definitely the biggest test. Burrows a great qb but the Bengals had an awful oline and were down 3 starters. Eagles have a far superior oline than the Bengals and hurts running ability will be a real problem. Chiefs d isn't gonna be able to those coverage sacks nearly as easily and are gonna have to actually blitz instead of just bluffing. Should be a great game tho
@frankemann81
@frankemann81 Жыл бұрын
@@ryanzimmerman3740 agree to disagree bud. Our top CB went down with a concussion and he'll be back for the Super bowl. So what you're saying is A.j Brown and davante Smith are better than Chase? You're saying they're a better combo than Chase and Higgins? Is Hurts better than Burrow? Nope, they're not! Defense might be better than the Bengals, but it isn't better than the 9ers 🤷
@ryanzimmerman3740
@ryanzimmerman3740 Жыл бұрын
@@frankemann81 AJ and Smith are easily on par with Chase and Higgins, and Goedert is a better 3rd option than Boyd is but that's not the point, what I'm saying is eagles will give hurts much more time in the pocket than the Bengals could, giving more time for recievers to get open and hurts to scramble. Hurts isn't as good of a qb as burrow is but burrows lack of an oline meant that the chiefs didn't need more than a 4 man rush. Chiefs are gonna have to blitz more often if they wanna generate the same amount of pressure. And with hurts ability to run they might need to use qb spys which will take away from the pass rush. Chiefs are gonna have to use a way different gameplan on defense if they wanna slow down the eagles offense

I’ve seen a lot of hate on Spags scheme., me being one of them especially during the regular season. Don’t get me wrong, dude tries to pressure the QB more often than not and having our rookie CBs try and defend top league WRs. It’s always infuriated me that defense wise he plays soft yet at the end of the season is when the brakes get cut off and we see Spags for who he is. Honestly, I’m done with the Spags hate. These rookies held a bengals offense with arguably two 1WRs with just over 200yds of offense. Impressive. Plus two picks. Chiefs secondary is only going to get more dangerous as the years progress.
The Bills are (literally) changing how defense is played.
