My Dad had polio. Not sure why but they did surgery on one of his legs and it never grew at the same rate as the other thereafter so one leg is a bit smaller than the other. That said he’s super athletic now even in his old age. Before he got Alzheimer’s he was still outrunning adults in their prime physical fitness.

He said he lived a fulfilling life and I'm happy for him about that, but his whole life was robbed away from him just because he had polio and needed the iron long, but that does not mean that he is anything different from us. I honestly can't believe we didn't develop a better piece of tech for negative pressure respiration than the iron lung in his lifetime. Surely something portable could have been done? Something to attach to the lungs directly that could have been powered externally? It just feels like more could have been done for him. Still, he lived life happily, and that's all any of us could ask for.

I wonder if something like a pacemaker might work. There's a device for sleep apnea that's implanted in the throat to stimulate the throat muscles and keep the airway from collapsing. Something powerful enough for the diaphragm would need a stronger battery though, and that's hard to do inside the body.
@niki_0107

there was a portable version of the iron lung at some point, but all I can find on it are photos from around 1940, no articles or anything. I assume it never took off, maybe its design was flawed, but it would have been a huge improvement.

After the invention of the vaccine, I bet that the iron lung was no longer of use except for a few people that were stationary bound to it. And when there is not a huge base to cover, usually investors are not interested. In science, you need to sell a product for a wide market because investors (buisness people) usually want positive numbers. I work in Biotech and am a scientist at heart. It's a constant fight between investors and scientist.

I think the most obvious solution would be to replace the diaphragm with an implant of some sort. But because of the way the diaphragm works it would probably be prone to wear and tear. It would also need to be controlled somehow externally. I think it would be like being on oxygen but worse. A tube in the chest cavity instead of in the nose. I think it could be done but it would be risky and it would not be pretty.

I knew about Paul's story, but I didn't know he'd passed. Rest peacefully, Paul. You were an inspiration here on Earth. And I hope you are up There in Heaven running, jumping, dancing, throwing balls, and doing all the other things you couldn't while you were here. I know you were a happy man. But now you're whole again, too, in Paradise. You were absolutely amazing, and we will never forget you.

If I ever wound up in an iron lung or a similar situation I’d rather have someone pull the plug. I can’t imagine spending decades like this
