I've probably spent close to $50k on my fragile teeth, only to lose most of them due to a few unscrupulous dentists. As such, I've stopped going altogether, even for cleanings, until one eventually gets so bad that I have to have it pulled. For years, I hid behind my hand when I spoke and apologized to others for not having a nice dental appearance. Now? No dentures, no implants, and yet, I still sing on stages with my broken smile and missing teeth. My deepest empathy goes out to all who have suffered so greatly at the hands of sadistic, greedy dentists.

after i got married i went to my wife's dentist now that i was on her insurance. I had a cavity on a molar and was happy to get it filled. he took x rays and spotted 11 other cavities! when i went back to have the next one filled i told him i had pain in a specific tooth. I was shocked and a bit upset when he insisted on working on a different tooth. after that we decided to see my toddlers dentist as she was in town and we were already bringing my son. She took and reviewed my x-Rays and praised me on having NO CAVITY'S!!! he had planned on drilling and filling 10 more of my healthy teeth! Don't trust these snakes, if you have no pain and a dentist is trying to sell you dental work you need to get a second opinion.

At one point, my dentist told my mom that I need some brace to correct the 2 canines in my mouth as they were facing forwards a bit. It wasn't necessary to do since she told me that it was only for aesthetic. I've had the same dentist for years and never had any bad experience with him. And most of my visits are for a yearly check up. My last check up was on dec 22 and there was nothing bad going on. A small cavity that needs to be flossed but other than that, there were almost nothing bad on my teeth after 4 years not visiting the dentist. I do trust my dentist. Also, I do think some countries have more strict rules on dental procedures than others. I live in Canada so it might be the case.
@Ultrasonic00

As a dentist, getting a second opinion is always fine and reasonable but the attitude of no pain; no problem is a terrible one. By the time you have active and particularly unprovoked pain in a tooth you are often at the stage where you have to choose between expensive root canal or extraction of the tooth where if you were seen before a simple filling may have been fine. Pain in a tooth is a very bad sign indeed.

Eleven cavities compared to none...what a crook. I was told I had two cavities by my dentist once, but then had to switch dentists before they were filled, and the new dentist found new cavities. I have been visiting the new dentist ever since, and have had zero cavities while visiting there. When I asked the new dentist why I was told I had two cavities before while she found no cavities, she said that some practitioners are more aggressive than others. I don't know if my old dentist actually was doing anything wrong, as it might've just been a case of differing opinions, but with eleven cavities, there's no question there.

Nobody goes into dentistry because they want to help people or save lives. If you want to help people or save lives, you go to medical school and become a physician. Most dentists choose that career because they want to make a lot of money. If you are in doubt, just read about how fee-for-service healthcare in the USA works. It's exactly what it sounds like. The more services the healthcare provider performs, the more money they can bill to the patient's insurance. Therefore, dentists actually get rewarded for performing unneeded procedures.

I feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only who fell for this. I had a dentist convince me to have three perfectly good silver fillings removed and replaced with ceramic (I think?) fillings, which broke over the following five years. I've never had a good dental hygiene since I was a kid and have never been to an actual dentist myself until after I was in my early 20s and was already working. When I was living in the Philippines, I had dental work done by some resident dental students for free from one of the Public Hospitals ongoing dental program there and their work deserved a 10-star! Not only was the entire check up to post-op process less painful than I have always imagined, but each of the dentists who worked on me was very respectful and made me feel comfortable all the way through. I now live in NZ and have found a dental practice who only does what is absolutely medically necessary for me and doesn't promote all kinds of expensive procedures I won't need/want, especially with dental expenses here being very expensive. It's a shame that some professionals just don't live up to what they have sworn in oath to do for their clients/patients all in the name of money.

He punctured my sinus cavity and I had an awful infection within 2days. My face swelled, my eye swelled shut and i couldn't breathe out of my nose. After treatment for this it reoccurred within 2 weeks. He left a suture in which got infected. The root canal failed, no reimbursement and ended up paying more for an extraction. I can't eat most foods, and when i do the dentures fall out. I have not eaten in public for 7 yrs or with another person. I am very depressed and isolated. I can't afford implants to stabilize the dentures. I just watched a webinar that teaches dentists how to make more money, have more write offs and get more insurance reimbursements. Its disgusting

I was in hospital for 5 days after the dentist punctured my sinus, black and blue face, eye swelled shut and it felt like someone had their fingers in my eye socket trying to pry my eyeball out. They were putting so many different antibiotics in my iv bag trying to get something to work which caused thrush/candida infection. I have SEVERE PTSD from this and need to be sedated for some procedures. At least I survived some have died from this.

Same here. I had to switch dentists because of a change in insurance, and at the very first appointment, my mother was told I had a cavity bad enough that it warranted a crown. It hadn't even been a whole year before my last visit at the previous dentists office (which i had no cavity then), and now this new guy was saying I needed a complete crown. My mom never questioned the dentist either. I had pain for the whole 6 months of having that crown as well as sever inflammation to my gums surrounding that crown. Eleven years later, I'm on my third crown with no guarantee that my tooth won't have any more problems and eventually need to be pulled. I was 9 years old when the quack money hungry dentist damaged my adult tooth to put a crown on it.

I remember how devastated I was to hear the first dentist I went to in two years tell me I needed eleven crowns because supposedly all of my old ones had gone bad, on top of a root canal. I ended up getting the root canal with my old dentist while visiting my parents, and when I asked about the other crowns he was totally confused. He said I only had one crown that needed to be fixed, in a tooth that I knew had chipped. That was several years ago. A lot of those “needed crowns” have still never been needed according to dentists in several different cities I’ve lived in.

I just overcame my fear of the dentist 2 days ago. I was in elementary school & used to have to BEG to be numbed. And when they did choose to numb me (shouldn't have had to ask) they weren't thorough or slow enough so I still ended up feeling pain. After having a molar extracted while I wasn't numb I developed a phobia of the dentist. It was too much pain for a 7 year old to bear. Got to the point where I needed a root canal & my jaw was throbbing. I finally went to a new dentist 20 years later & broke down in tears in his chair over what happened as a child. When I say I experienced 0 discomfort that day, I mean it. I had no idea it was supposed to be PAINLESS! if you've experienced pain or abuse at the hands of a dentist, do not throw away your own health over it. There are gentle and caring doctors still out there!!

So I started to make appointments with a dentist and she eventually told that the tooth had to be removed. On that day, I remember that on the first time I went there she said that, If I felt pain, I would rise my arm to let her know, and I did that 2-3 times and she applied anesthesia all of those times, I eventually told myself to stop and endure the pain until she removed it. I couldn't feel my mouth for like the rest of the day because of the amount of anesthesia she applied. At least I got a toy and Ice Cream after the removal… and I got to keep the tooth, although I don't know where it is now

On Long Island New York, Suffolk County, there was a dentist that did this. He did it to me and my sister and roughly 50 other children in our area. He was falsifying X Rays and saying we needed cavities when we had none. He'd drill to the root, cover it up and wait a few years for the inevitable root canal. He was caught by my 7th filling in as many months, was put in jail and was sued for what he did on top of which. My parents alone received $10,000 (This is in 1970s money) in compensation and there were 49 other people being paid out. So this is nothing new.

I have often felt afraid of this, that they were drilling where there was no cavity. My then boyfriend was told he needed a canine removed and replaced with an implant. I smelled a rat and took him to my dentist for a second opinion. My dentist confirmed the diagnosis. Boyfriend then went ahead with the lengthy, expensive and uncomfortable procedure. He had been in excruciating pain. But who can afford to have everything checked twice? And what if it was his dentist that cracked the canine in the first place? And he was a guy with otherwise perfect teeth, who never ate sweets. We go to great lengths to gather together enough money to have dental work done, sometimes over a year or more, asking for dentist money for birthdays, forgoing other things, moving in with someone to get on their dental plan, etc. What a terrible crime.

I graduated from BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery, aka the degreefor dentistry) last year and spent nearly 2 out of 3 clinical years under covid lockdown. Because of that I had a single year of experience versus the standard 3 years. Despite having passed the exams and supervised procedures, I don't have the confidence to be an actual dentist. As Brew says, dentistry is VERY, very subjective and I do see a lot of our lecturers disagreeing with one another on what treatment to go for, let alone diagnosis. It'd lead to newer lecturers (coming in from other institutes, with decades of experience under their belt) to be shunned and the long-staying lecturers would make their little bubble together. Also as Brew says, once a filling is done, the integrity of the tooth is compromised, and that it only delays the inevitability of extracting that tooth altogether. I entered dentistry wanting to help people, but all I see is a bajillion ways to compromise a person and I didn't want to be a part of that. Plus I didn't like the high margin of subjectivity of dentistry coupled with the fact that we're dealing with human lives. I decided to switch to an office job while having a few laughs when my colleagues ask about my degree.

I had a dentist as a child who tod me noting could ever be fixed, do super basic cleaning or fixes but never used enough numbing, ten told my mom everything was fixed. Believe he's still on the run after finally getting caught red handed like a decade later. Meanwhile we had a man doing dentures and partials on people for 5 years the city over, and he was recently found to be a fraud with no prior training at all. Its horrifying what people get away with.

I just switched dentists. My old one retired and the fellow who bought his practice tried to convince me to replace my two 3-tooth bridges when I had asked about a broken single crown on a different tooth. I got referrals from friends to another dentist who took x-rays and after examining my teeth, said that the broken porcelain was cosmetic and there was no need to replace any of the bridges. He saved me thousands of dollars!

I have a one up story for this. I lacked enzymes to make my teeth fall out... so either I pulled them myself or got them extracted by the dentist. Every. Single. Baby. Tooth. Now I need nitrous.

Reminds me of this dentist I went to when I moved. You know those T shaped things you're supposed to bite on when they take X-rays? Yeah the dentist cut my mouth up with them, didn't know it was possible, and told me it was normal. Then when she was done I was told I had a bunch of teeth growing under mine and would have to get them extracted. Not only was I way past loosing my baby teeth but I've had braces before. Even though I was little I did pay attention to the X-rays and not once did I see extra teeth growing in.

As a kid I had a dentist who constantly said I had tons of cavities. He billed our insurance thousands of dollars unknowingly because we had medicaid. The last time I saw him for a “cavity” I wasn’t fully numbed, I tried to tell him but he wouldn’t stop. When the dentist saw me crying he said “kids younger than you do this stop crying.” When we left I walked out before my mom and went to the car still crying. After I told my mom I wasn’t going back we went to another dentist who compared the xrays he took vs the ones the first dentist took and I had no cavities where the other dentist said I had 4.

I was never scammed but I can speak on anxiety of going. I think I was 10 years old and went for a routine cleaning. Right off the bat when they started cleaning and it really hurt. It wasn't the kind of pain you can tolerate for a long time. I had to stop and end the session. Took little over 10+ years before I even considered going back to the dentist for cleaning. Fortunately the new dentist I went to was a much better experience and almost pain free.

My parents took us to a dentist when we were kids that was abusive and definitely over treated. A huge red flag is if the dentist encourages the parents to wait outside of the exam room. The less involved they want you to be, the more concerned you should be. Their justification was that they actually treated multiple children in the same large space at one time, and parents should not be watching other people’s children have medical care done. I was nervous going to the dentist when I was little, but after going to that dentist as a child, and then young adult, I was traumatized. I get panic attacks trying to schedule a dentist appointment. I’m overdue for cleaning, and for some dental work, And it’s some thing I’m gonna have to work on in therapy before I even think about getting done. If your dentist wants to see your child alone, even if there are other children, or other doctors in the room, run. They likely aren’t giving your child enough medication to numb the area, or belittling your child, or are straight up, hurting them on purpose. I experienced all of this. The practice was actually shut down because of these issues happening to many other children. It was marketed as an affordable place to take your kids and specializing in working with young children. And they were not Safe.

Sounds like a dentist I heard about from Florida. I already have dental anxiety and I don’t even have trauma. Just minor teeth pulling when I was little

I think this also happened to me but with a "free" dental check up my school allowed. My family barely have cavities as a genetic thing and my teeth were fine until I went into that RV. Now I have multiple holes in my flat teeth and I need to get them checked unless I want no teeth. Wish this information came out WAY before 2015. 😔

When I was really young, and I mean 4 or 5 or 6, we had a dentist who would yank our mouths open and force us onto the chair and be overall too aggressive and unkind. It took our family another 6 or 7 years to work up being able to take us to a dentist again. I don't trust them.

The middle of the video where it went over the most common things they push… instant red flags for my new dentist. I’ve never had dental insurance and have always gone my to my small hometown one that does “$99 cleaning” they would recommend a filling or let me know I may need a crown in the future but they’ll take a look at it in X months to see if I really need one… my new dentist did a cleaning and told me I needed $8k in dental work - they then tried to get me to commit to a payment plan and put a deposit for my next appointment. I wasn’t able to and said I’d have to call them. Seeing this video makes me really glad I didn’t have the extra money at the time. Gonna go back to my little dentist for a second opinion

I remember going to a dentist located at the mall one time, I remember they charge 7 times more compared to the dentist that was recommended by my sister dentist. The dentist at the mall recommended drilling and other complicated procedures, I'm thinking if he's providing information or selling fear, while the other family clinic we went to, just pulled it out very quickly no complications or infection after that, she was a female at that. I'm glad I was able to convince my mom to look for another dentist for a cheaper offer

I once went to a new dentist and she wanted to replace all my fillings. I'm glad I canceled that appointment. It's been 10+ years and I've never had any problems.

My partner ran into a dentist like this and he went for a second opinion because it just felt so odd. The second doctor said his teeth were completely normal!

Live in AZ and went to Mexico for an implant. Several months and 2 infections later I finally had insurance and went to a US practice. Several surgeries and 3 years later it's finally fixed. It's WORTH IT to get the best dentist you can find. You'll pay more if you don't.

I had the opposite problem. I almost lost one of my teeth (and could have risked even worse health problems if it stayed that way) because my previous dentist never saw a problem and didn't fix anything until after years of returning pain I called another dentist, one who also took emergency calls, because the pain already shot all the way down my entire throat.

OMG, I do not trust dentists at all as it is, and my uncle is a dentist. I've had numerous dentists tell me to pull my wisdoms, which I can't afford to pull as insurance wouldn't cover and will cost me thousands. To this day they remain and I'm fine with my teeth, I'm 46, I'm pretty sure there really isn't going to be much change besides decay if I don't take care of them.

I replied to another post here.. in some countries, dentists are trained to pull them anyways! In some other cultures, they don't do it unless they would cause issues in terms of crowding for example. I would not get them removed at all if there are no issues. Get that small tooth brush for a single tooth and you can easily reach the back tooth. Unfortunately, I only learned about this very recently.
