One time I was working in the cloakroom for the ballet, and someone checked a bag with me, and then she realised that while the ballet was on I would just be standing there guarding people's bags and coats, so she got a book out of her bag for me to read. It was the children's book "I Want My Hat Back" (later turned into a National Theatre production which is apparently now available to stream online via their streaming subscription). The girl was SO excited to show me this children's book, and I really enjoyed not only the book itself but the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of someone taking the time to show it to me. I was trying to figure out why the Christmas creature "traditions" fit with the Christmas aesthetic so well, considering that it's a bunch of creepy nonsense. Then I realized that it likely fits precisely because it's nonsensical. The kinds of stories we tell kids, like Santa Claus, have been with us so long that they feel completely normal to us, even though everything is so random and illogical. Why reindeer? Why the north pole? Why the chimney? There's no actual reasoning behind most Christmasy things, but we don't recognize that unless it's something that is new to us
@OlleLindestad4 жыл бұрын
Have you read the Moomin books? There's a short story where the Moomins (who usually hibernate through all of winter) are woken up too early, and they're terrified to hear everyone talking about this being called Christmas that's supposed to arrive soon, and you have to appease it with a decorated tree in your house and presents and special food.

@sharpieRulestheWorld4 жыл бұрын
@Kris can you tell us some I’m curious!
@Kris-lu1rs4 жыл бұрын
uh ok! Basically there are a lot of stories surrounding the concept of well-behaving children being rewarded and bad children punished around christmas times. It makes for great parenting after all, especially in a time period where myths and stories answer the whys and hows of the world, whereas today we have science and reason taking that spot. See the transition from mythos to logos. Please note however, that I am just some dude who found a video and liked it. I am no mythology expert and so take what I say with a grain of salt just in case I screw this up. The story that sticks out the most to me, and that this video reminded me of, is the story of Krampus. In the alpine region, he was seen as a companion of saint nicholas, a precursor to Santa. the saint would visit the homes of children on december 5th or 6th, to bring some light into a rather dark and scary time of the year. After all, midwinter was a magical time of year, with many creatures running about causing trouble. So the saint would visit the children at their homes, and ask them to recite some poetry or psalms. He might also see if they had done their chores. If they had, he would give them gifts. If a child however had not done their homework, had not kept up with education, had not helped their parents, had been disobedient or lazy, Krampus would pay a visit instead. Two different fates could await: He could either give the parents a whip to use as they saw fit, or he would take them in a bag and stroll off. What happened to these most unlucky children is unknown. He could drown them in the frozen river, or maybe he ate them. That part is unsure, because no one carried off in the night by Krampus would ever return. Hopefully you can see why I believe there are some pararells between the myth of Krampus and the christmas creature. The creature lacks the devilish description of Krampus, but the actions seem to vaguely correspond in my opinion. Maybe there have been some inspiration? Thanks for reading all the way through!

Ok. I loved that story and I'm gonna be thinking about it for the rest of the days leading to Christmas. First of all, it reminded me of an old story I heard about the Chinese New Year monster. There was a monster called Year that would come out and harm the townspeople once a year. The people decided to put up blood red decorations outside of their houses to spook it. And they also started to make loud noises with instruments, firecrackers and pots and pans to scare it away and it worked! When the monster ran away, they congratulated each other by saying the Year passed

Sadly, several employees of the Vaguely Mysterious Shipping Organization have reported that the Christmas Creature doesn't take kindly to being placed in a cardboard box. You may, however, be able to take advantage of its portal-manipulative abilities and convince it to come to you through sacrificing of a gallon of goats' milk, seven oatmeal raisin cookies, and a couple figs on your bloodstone circle. Why you would want it anywhere near your place of residence for any reason (other than disposing of crop circle investigators) beats me, though. Seems like a bit of a health risk. Forgive my 2:30AM mumblings, oh Christmas Creature. In all seriousness, I hope that you find some way to get the book! It definitely sounds like a keeper!

Well that was a trip 😂 I loved the reminder at the end about taste being subjective. it's so easy to get caught up in what's considered 'good' instead of just allowing yourself to enjoy what you enjoy

gentle creepy pasta christmas story I knew a lot of kids when I was a kid that would have been obsessed with that book, too. Most of those kids were Nightmare Before Christmas obsessed.

Despite the actual story being very creepy just wanted to commend Hank's story reading! So well paced and articulated. Read us more, Hank!

I think the best Christmas would be having both John and Hank reading children's books on a livestream

The book is unsettling, just like going home for Christmas. Perfect!

well, seeing this just makes my nerdy brain wheels turn. if u just made it about 12% more wholesome it would be a really unique and fun tradition to do irl, especially if u live somewhere rural. like just taking away the "dog watching u" bit would make it super fun (bc if u were doing it with kids, that's a childhood distrust of dogs waiting to happen). the hill part would be an awesome feat of engineering to try

There's a little "Nightmare before Christmas" vibe to this. I really like Hank's reading voice though. Thank you for reading to us!
