I just want to shed some light on what may be a misconception. I’m not sure that you all know this, but John does everything in these videos. So (and I’ll go out on a limb without John’s permission) if he ran credits, even on this one, you’d see his name under every single aspect of this lesson- basically performing as a one-man-band. His cast and crew, for the most part, is “John P. Hess” on all of his lessons. Lately, from time to time he may have one or two helpers/friends in studio assisting him, but for years he been alone in the office writing, the studio filming, and editing bay working to make these lessons great. This particular lesson was a huge undertaking and required assistance on the day of the shot, but otherwise John did everything- concept, preparation, research, writing, storyboard, directing, filming, acting, CGI, editing, etc., solo. And this one was his “maiden-voyage" into CGI, while again, learning it on the job, all on his own. As for me, I just show up and do my thing and/or help a little here and there because we’re friends and true friends help each other out, we enjoy each others company, and I respect and support him as a professional and a friend. He worked for weeks to make this lesson informative and entertaining, but unique for his filmmaking family out there. Thanks for all of your kind words and continued support. DylerTurden2

Back in 2013 I was an extra on the 'Macbeth' film with Michael Fassbender. Assuming the role of a bloodied Scottish warrior, I and about 100 other male extras, were daily dosed with some kind of fake blood that was so damned sticky that it leaked into our costumes, the result being that some days I was actually stuck to my costume. In between each take the make-up and effects crew would do the rounds, adding blood to our fake wounds (I had a wicked prosthetic scar down the right hand side of my face) as the stuff was solidifying pretty quickly. A messy, tiring experience, but damned good fun too. You're right about the shaving cream though - it really does help to get the blood off. I don't recall it tasting of peppermint though, it tasted more like a cheap corn syrup. Anyway, thanks for your videos. Utterly fascinating and I learn something new every time I watch one. Cheers.

Great video! I've been using the corn syrup recipe for many years to teach the local boy scouts basic first aid, but I never thought of adding peppermint to the mix... good idea! As the wound make up only has to last a few minutes, we use skin toned home made playdough to make the fake wounds and drench them in fake blood. The kids really enjoy it, and in the process they learn what we're trying to teach.

Would you ever consider doing a history of sci fi episode? I know you've touched upon it in episodes like the slit scan one, but if you made one which touched upon things like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Logans Run, THX 1138, Soylent Green, and the War Of The Worlds, that would be extremely interesting and you'd definitely find ways to make it very entertaining

Wondeful lecture as always. Regaring bloog clotting, I think you should have said "drying" instead. When it is outside the body, I reckon that drying, a passive process, will be much more significant than clotting, which requires a number of enzymatic reactions to occur.

Another fake blood formulation that deserves a shout-out (despite not working out so well) is the stuff they used on the original Dawn of the Dead. IIRC, Tom Savini said they used a special 3M formulation for fake blood, but it turned out that the colors were too bright and it flowed too easily compared to real blood. Romero was OK with it, though, as he came to feel it gave the film more of a lurid, "comic-book" type of look and feel.

Will you ever do an episode on The History of Western films ?
@FilmmakerIQ9 жыл бұрын
+Mgen Strange We have talked about doing a course on Westerns for a long time. The problem is it's such a large genre. The trick is finding a hook into the subject where you don't fall into a rabbit hole where you end up with a watered down overview that doesn't have much value. We are working on some ideas where we can take small bites out of the apple over several videos where each can stand on its own. So stay tuned. ;)

We used chocolate milk and old food color powder from the GDR my mother used for baking for a video made in high school. We never could get comparable food color later in the super market. So we tried different stuff e.g. liquid food. But it never looked as good as the chocolate milk an color powder. With chocolade powder you could adjust viscosity and darkness. I think we used ketchup as well but not as intended initially for blood itself but to create "crusty blood" for wound.

@FilmmakerIQ9 жыл бұрын
+DandyDon “Xerox6085” A lot of the commercial fake blood that is inedible use forms of glycol like Propylene glycol and mix in some thickening agents like Hydroxyethyl cellulose and Triethanolamine. Commercial blood also uses a lot of those anti-bacteria chemicals like Methyl Paraben and Imidazolidinyl urea. Not sure what Mole Richardson blood was, if it was runny it probably was a mix of something like that...
