Honestly, the cinematography was one of my most favorite and memorable aspects of it, and I'm ecstatic for your video here. I just saw the film tonight, and of course am binging on behind-the-scenes of Jojo Rabbit (like I do with all films I see), and came across your channel! I had not expected to see a cinematography-focused video at all, let alone a whole channel dedicated to it! :) Please continue making more of these.

I have to say guys, this entire series exploring DP's and their process is amazing. As a DP myself, it's difficult to gain access to this type of insight that is natural and organic from these titans of our craft. Often times, lighting is taught too academically that, while brilliant (and necessary to know) in theory, lacks the nuance and "you have to feel it" approach that translates better on camera and on set. Love what this channel is doing and looking forward to more of it. 👏🏽👏🏽

I gather from this video that the major wait times were the explosion resets-and you really don’t want to rush those. The other set ups mentioned were genius in their simplicity, so waiting for lighting to reset was minimized. Back in the 90s, we joked about Jan de Bont liking to use available light: EVERY available light. I worked in a rental house in San Francisco when they shot Basic Instinct, and the production rented almost every lightning unit at all the rental houses (CRW, Adolph Gasser, and Mason Studios). You can bet those setup took forever.

Hey, just a technical correction: At @2:14 you're actually showing the sensor of an Alexa 65. The sensor of the Alexa LF is 4448x3096 which gives you 1.43:1 ratio. The sensor of the SXT at OG is 3424x2202 which gives you roughly 1.55:1. So with the LF he would have lost much, much less. Obviously this is if the lenses actually cover the sensor. I don't think that the Hawk V-lites 1.3s would cover the large format sensors that are being used today. (I think when he says "LF" he might be referring to the Alexa 65 which really has a wide sensor, but it's also a large format camera.)
