While watching the movie, I felt repulsed by every action that Mae made. I completely disagreed on open privacy and hated the ending. Just the idea of going transparent goes against everything human to me. It's like if every human in the world became a celebrity. They would be constantly stalked and everyone would watch them. It would drive me crazy. Who the heck wants to watch me do homework for several hours?!! You'd have to constantly play a role of someone perfect and kind. No one can be like that, and having your alone time is a blessing. That's would should be considered a human right. Privacy.

Though I admit some of the technology ideas that The circle had were not that bad. But they would have to have huge restrictions to be viable for me. Revealing the history of your ancestors is pretty much pointless, they are not you. But checking the genetics to avoid heritable diseases is good! Decreasing crime would also be a plus, but I think maybe only those with a history of crime or checking their likelihood of it/mental diseases, should be transparent. How they would keep the camera on, no clue.

Privacy is power. It gives us the right to control who we are. This dystopia is such a nightmare to me. And when I see everyone around me being slaves to social media and respect no privacy, I feel so alone and trapped. Thank you for your comment, it means a lot to me

I saw Mae as a villain. She decided that none of us should have privacy on her own and was so cold when Mercer died. She forced her agenda on people who didn’t want it. Then she goes Kayaking? WTF!?! I felt that this movie was sickening and it’s main character a self righteous bitch. I felt sorry only for her parents.

Instead of being your *bad* self. Because not everyone act like trash or violate law when they are not watched. I naturally (without a camera) won't throw my trash on the ground. In my opinion, this will OBLIGE dickheads behaving properly. But if you take it on a "personality" level it's true everyone will act nice. But I don't think your personality changes... Concrete example : Mae loves kayaking. But she stole a kayak when nobody was watching. So now, with the camera, she is STILL kayaking but "legally". She didn't change her personality, hobbies etc... But she changed her behaviour. I don't know if you really understand my point?😅😂

Most people may feel this way (choose the right of privacy) ; in the film, Cold Cases were being "cracked" from 20 years prior, and in 10 minutes - when people gave up the right to privacy. This kind of "sensation" would lead to 100% acceptance and compliance by people who have no past history of crime or feel they have nothing to hide. The Lock Down on social freedom and right of privacy will be voluntary.

And I understand if you’re going the type that needs to be watched. I don’t judge you because at the end of the day if we dissect each person we will always find shit we don’t like, black or white male or female. We are human beings and we are beautiful and weird at the same time. We can’t hide from it. The church wants you to throw away your so called evil side but you might as well cut your heart out. Because they are apart of you and you must control your self and except who you are. Now we have more people willing to listen than ever before. Now if who you are is someone who will cause you or other people harm you must get help or suffer the consequences of your actions. I’m a know body just saying my 2 cents and not an expert so feel free to say shut up and I will be happy to do so.

The creepiest part of the entire film and the one and only reason it should be watched in a theater on a busy night is after the ending credits begin to roll you get to witness all the of the little blue screens that pop to life all over the theater as everyone dives into their cell phones the moment the movie has finished.

Yeah confuses the heck out of me too, I feel like she embraced “transparency” even though she didn’t want to at the beginning, I feel like the movie was heading for some kind of morality lesson about privacy and boundaries, but nope it went and go in balls deep into being transparent for everyone. A good ending would’ve been striking a balance of both not fully embracing the system, yes it saved her life but doesn’t mean it will always be used for such purposes all the time.

@@maoomph Actually I think the movie did make a point about privacy and boundaries but in a different way than you expected. Basically, the movie/book was never saying that what Mae ended up doing was the right thing but you were rather supposed to realize that Mae was the villain all along. It's more of a satirical statement and it was made to make you think she was gonna be the heroine and turn the company around but she ended up creating the worst thing possible.

Frank Bech I read your entire position. I do dare to argue that the act of recording, or in your example, a photographic capture of a place or thing may reserve a question of intent. Which in my opinion is what this movie was all about. For example, let's say a photographer admires a contemporary artist which has minimal to no recognition, and by their ( photographer ) earnest to capture the significance of the artist's meaning, they capture the images using their own artistic probes to elucidate and illustrate the inteded meaning. This is helpful as can be harmful in the event that an opportunist con man/woman may capatilize at the expense of the laborer. It is all subjective to intent and bottom line.

It occurs to me that this discussion sets up a question that is perhaps better than the one posed in A Clockwork Orange. That book and movie ask if it's truly a triumph for morality if you intrusively alter a person's conditioning. I find the whole question of "Are you acting morally because of your genuine character, or because you're being watched?" more intriguing. There are even theological implications. Frankly, people who insist "Without an all-seeing omnipresent God everyone is just going to go rape and kill all they want!" worry me. Is that honestly the only thing holding their own capacity for evil in check?

I do have to wonder a little if people thinking "Huh, the end of privacy might be cool" have read Orwell, who wrote "Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull." That's more than just privacy, that's ownership, and responsibility for, one's very self.

You wrote: "Are you acting morally because of your genuine character, or because you're being watched?" I would add are we selling our birthright for a bowl of soup? You would ultimately be acting PC because it would be opinion driven by the PC mob rule forces that would determined what is good and what is bad by social media polling perhaps. Then there is the addiction of those watching, judging, and opinion scanning for entertainment. To up the high for gratification what was once good will be passé and bad. Mercy and judgement from an opinion poll of mankind. This will not end pretty and no escape except to The Hiding Place for the soul.

very very good points. As a society we should all hold standards to ourselves and make our own decisions because that is what makes us alive. Once we start going with the flow because everyone else is doing it and "thats just how it is", is when we truly lose meaning in the word morality. So a safe world may ironically mean the end of morality lol. We would soon all become sheep to whoever is in charge (of literally everything), truly degrading and becoming nothing but animals. So the movie inadverntenly asks this question: Do we want to live or do we want to be comfortable?

I thought the book was terrible. The characters felt unreal and their actions made no sense. They were all presented as well adjusted, fairly intelligent people, but their actions and reactions were incredibly stupid and insane. Mae's relationship with Francis was a good example of that. She meets him, she thinks his weird, there's something off about him and she finds him unattractive. But she dates him. Then he screws her over by using her in a presentation of a new dating application without her consent, she dumps him. Then she decides to have sex with him simply because the guy she really wanted was unavailable (she is a young attractive woman in a campus full of young attractive men). Then he screws her over again by filming their sex and uploading it to a public cloud. And then she dates him again. because "she enjoys the power she has over him". That's the explenation the author gives. This "power" has no implications in the actions and reactions of the characters, Mae never gets her way with this guy, he keeps using her and abusing her trust, but Mr. Eggers said she has power over him, so it must be true. And that's the way characters behave in this story. Their motivations and reactions are explained, rather than shown. And they make no sense.

This kind of reminds me of the Anime Psycho Pass. They were monitored like that even to the point where the system could detect whether or not someone WOULD eventually commit a crime and they'd be locked up and rehabilitated (if they were capable of rehab) before they ever committed the crime. No one had choices because everything was determined for them. Crazy stuff man.

As much as I enjoy the emotional interactions with, for and against technology (and the evolution in technology), I think one of the most important message from the book (I haven't watched the movie yet) was that one of the most important parts of it was that people could have the choice to opt out. Live in the woods, or choose a live without the luxuries of a world where you are being watched and kept in control. SPOILER TALK The part about the book (again, don't know for sure about the movie) ends, is with the choise of the protaganist to make a law that makes it illegal to opt out. They'll make you obligated to being watched, you can't go out. Thet was also the reason her ex drove off the bridge, not only because of being stalked by creepy drones, but also because it made him realise he could never escape this 'social life'. And I think that's one of the big points of the book; it's not per se bad how technology is going (through sometimes it could be and we should be more aware of how technology can go 'bad' by how people will be able to use it), but you need to have the choice to make a choice about it. You need to have to be able to leave the community and start on your own if that's what you want.

They want people to vote because if only a certain group of people are voting (Usually mostly the middle class and up because of various reasons) we don't really have a democracy anymore. However- if we try to make people vote by saying it's against the law if they don't (which is something they want in the movie) that is also against democracy. People have the right to choose- Because sometimes not voting is done in protest- for example in my country you can turn in a blank vote. It's like saying: "None of the parties are good enough, do better".

Watched it last night knowing nothing about it. Was an interesting film, felt like a lite Black Mirror episode. I think the film was setting up Mae as the "villain" because she thinks she's right. Her near death experience along with her dad's MS she believes that she can do better for everyone. But her ego gets in the way and she cuts off her actual friends for some randoms around the globe. The Circle was ideas born in empathy that evolved into control and manipulation, if you're not on their page they expose you, ruining lives, causing mania etc. Mae does this but without the malevolence, unfortunately mass surveillance is a terrible idea and she creates a reality where everyone is being watched. Quite a dark film really. Enjoyable on a late night. The Beck Concert was poiiiiiintless, he should've just been a background cameo, no offence to Beck. Tom Hanks: We are so fucked😂😂

I think the point of the beck concert was to show how “powerful” the circle was. A company that can book a name like that just for its employees for a weekend party on campus is legit huge, rich, exclusive, powerful. Plus the company was setting the stage for it to be the most important thing in the lives of the employees. Even though they were given free will to leave and go do other things the company rated employees higher for staying. In this day and age kids are graded with those percentages and most kids strive to get that 95% or higher score. It’s like Pavlov’s dog. Put the company first get a reward. In the end Mae puts the company first by exposing the two leaders who were keeping secrets and using the info the circle got for controlling others. So that’s really sad. You said you might be into it if "it meant your family members were safe". Define safe. Safe from criminals and kidnapping and crime, sure. But what about if a leader you disagreed with was in power (highly highly likely) and they watched your every move and disagreed with a lot you did. What happens when you can't have honest deep thought provoking conversations because the topics of your conversations are illegal. How do people not see that this is highly likely? Just because you currently agree with and respect the powers in place at this time in history does not mean that 20 years from now you will feel the same way. The powers in place in twenty years might completely disagree with your World view, making your mere thoughts and actions punishable. Knowledge may be a basic human right, but I feel that freedom is even more so.

Humans are a social species thereby care quite significantly about what people think about them how they perceive them. In order not be excluded from the social group. Atleast in ouer society and we are raised. So I do think people act differently generaly if people are watching. And tend to behave more in a way that is socially acceptable and deemed "good". But I don't think erasing privacy would make people truly good. Cause they would obviously just act good out of the need to look good not out of geniuly empathic and good intentions. I actually don't know what would happen to people exactly it could get realy crazy. But any energy and thoughts in them that normaly led to behavior that's deemed bad that they now would realy want to avoid that has some compensatory function for them would go somewhere else. Possibly some people would maybe just stop caring as much about being perceived good and just go for some less moral behaviors. But depending what the consequences would be I can allot of people developing strong self hating and selfsuppressing mechanism that in worst case could led them to suicide. This idea of constant monitorisation and being watching sounds very controlling too depending on the social group its place in. If people watch your every move and call you out for any defect or immoral behavior that would be extremely controlling and destructive too I think. Actually this phenomenon is already taking place on a smaller scale today. Via cancel culture. Which is also a means of controlling individual members of the social group by the social group. By puplicly calling them out, shaming them in a way and also excluding them from the social group as a punishment abit. That is also based on increased surveillance. Because you can now look up tweets, posts, videos of single individuals of like years and decades ago.

There is a notion in some 'socially advanced' cultures that secrets, privacy and personal space are forms of theft. The basic idea is that society at large has greater needs than those of any individual. The irony is that these cultures have leaders that put themselves above such social norms. To quote somebody: "All animals on the Farm were equal, but some of the animals were more equal than others."

Health > Privacy > Security > Freedom > Order > Equality > Justice Allow me to explain: - Without health you die or suffer great pain, so it's the most important thing. - Privacy is more important than security or freedom because enough privacy gives you both. If nobody knows anything about you, you are free to do what you want and nobody can hurt you. - I love freedom, but without security, you die or get robbed or raped. - Freedom is more important than order or equality. With freedom you have more opportunity to solve your problems. With too much equality everyone's the same and nobody is special. Everyone are equally f*cked. Order is law, but too much law makes you oppressed, a slave. - Justice is relative. There is no absolute justice. Each person has his own definition of justice. One man's trash is another man's treasure, one man's pain is another man's pleasure.

Put simply think about these three things: 1. Knowledge is a human right 2. Privacy is a human right 3. Well-being is a human right Imagine scenarios in which these are in conflict with each other. The bottom line is that well-being should always prevail over the other two! That's why this movie is pretty shallow...

I agree with you about how you felt they downplayed the original story. But what I felt (could be wrong) is that they altered it's true version to fit reality and show the affects of a tech-cult and it's main character fighting for dominance in order to mold the world/company to her vision. I felt overtime she became self involved and began ignoring family and friends and decided to absolutely remove privacy to return Humankind to their (Adam & Eve's) original nature.

I have to say, this video has "Ending explained" in the title, though it didn't explain the ending necessarily. Just your point of view on the issues it addresses. I think the movie was trying to point out that more often than not those who try to impose something on people are not likely to impose it on themselves. That they are wanting others to partake and do the work while they simply observe and sit in their high-chairs. In the movie once exposed for all to see including emails, text, etc. Tom Hanks mutters the words "We are fucked" but doesn't go into any detail of why. That's because why wasn't important. What was important was the fact that they were simply fucked. Because they knew they had done things others would see as wrong, though they didn't care when they were viewing other people. However, when Emma Watson takes over she is open to bei g transparent for all to see, showing us that the true, real leaders are the ones willing to follow their own set parameters. At least, that's how I perceived it.

I didn't understand the ending at first...but this video helped. ...basically, from what I understand, Mae becomes the 'face' of the company, (if you will) and the story leads up to a point where Mae could help bring down the Circle, or advance the Circle's ideals into society/the world. ..Although she is smart and good willed, she was naïve to all of its consequences, both good and bad. ... And with her desire to make the world a better place, she chose to take the Ideals of the Circle(Global transparency) and take them to the next level with her creativity.(with total transparency for the entire world). She starts by volunteering the founders into their own ideals and making them transparent, And then it ends showing life goes on. (Possibly as a better place) even though she broke the trust of her parents, and got her friend killed, and chose a life of limited intimate privacy, She held onto her belief that the Circle will make the world better, and everyone should be forced to go along with it by making it a law. She became not only a believer in the circle, but a new innovator of the Circle. But as the "AtZ show" explained so well, people are flawed and complex and leaves both directions with positives and negatives....so the end of the movie is left almost open-ended for the audience to ponder on the ideas. But Mae chose to be connected online forever, and is shown accepting her choice by welcoming drones and being watched 24 seven while kayaking on the peaceful water. (An activity she used to do alone) For me personally, I'll share some of my thoughts. For one, I would have blasted the drones out of the sky because when I go out into the woods, or out to the lake or river. I Want to be ALONE. Even if it means being Not as safe. There are people out in the world who would love to control your life in the name of safety.. Are all secrets lies?, Is everything in private wrong/bad? Is everything done in public good? is every good intention helpful? How can you keep people accountable when wrong is right, and right is twisted into being wrong? To me, the human condition will never allow a perfect utopia, until the human heart is cured of evil and selflessness. And I don't think people will ever be able to create a cure for that in of themselves. ..both directions will co-inhabit no matter what, because people have free will. People will still choose to do wrong even while being watched, (they do it already) because people justify their actions and create their own moral laws without a perfect moral-law-giver who is beyond the human nature. .... Just my thoughts on a very thought provoking movie/story.

I think they completely failed with the ending and this is why: 1. There are already numerous serous conspiracies being blown wide open. Makes you want to ask those in power: "aren't you afraid someone is going to find out?" Lol, nope. Many people already found out, so what? 2. Posting someone's private conversations online sends you to jail, you don't magically take over the company. 3. No one is going to take over the company with the power of friendship and transparency. Just because you "beat" the CEO you don't get to own the company It's sad to see a movie that was going so well just jump to an ending clearly written by a 5 year old.

Having cameras in a house makes me INCREDIBLY paranoid having them in restaurants very paranoid. Aside public streets I don’t want cameras within line of sight. Pointed at entrances and exits sure but, the concept of being constantly watched and listened to is terrifying to me. I went into a friends house in middle school and there were cameras within the house four giant ones that was a big fear of mine. That’s not my top fear but I only have a few now as I’ve been forced one way or the other to deal with the others often making them worse in the process

This was a helpful video. I just watched the movie, I've been watching a lot of "internet of things" movies lately, but the ending didn't give me much of a conclusion. I didn't understand what it meant. I assumed after Tom Hanks said "We're screwed" he would have decided to 'turn off' The Circle, or pull back on making everything 'transparent' but then we see Mae being watched, and being okay with being watched.

John Boyega’s character was also supposed to be May’s love interest. It’s not surprising that the film kept the chemistry but did a hard left when their relationship was supposed to be official. One thing I did like from this movie is showing how social interaction can impact a person’s livelihood, self perception, and how we can easily be hypercritical & hypocritical in anonymity & numbers rather than being up front.

The movie ending was more relatable than "mind reading". Also Minority Report comes to mind, just because you make a tech that prevents stuff from happening doesn't mean it be counter used. Also social anxiety, people do not always behave better when they are being watched but exactly opposite. Like stage fever and performance anxiety like when you notice someone is watching you and you are afraid of doing something embarrassing or you think there is already something wrong can have a negative effect.

I liked the question the movie put forth of transparency versus privacy, because it dealt with a serious debate going on today. What's even more interesting is that both transparency and privacy are forms of freedom; transparency is the freedom for others to have unlimited access to your information and privacy is the freedom to limit access of your information. Now, both of these things are extremely important. Without one or the other, society could not function. If everyone was one hundred percent transparent all the time, as in the end of the movie, then those that are looking to do bad have unlimited access to your information and therefore know exactly how to create the most contentious circumstance for you to be in, and potentially force you to do bad things to you or other using personal info as blackmail. If everyone went completely the opposite, however, humans would be so antisocial that we could not function in day-to-day life. We would likely develop a fear of spreading information, which could then cause a fear of information itself, and, worst-case scenario, a fear of people. We would flounder in our homes, unable to be around others. Therefore, the best solution is a combination of transparency and privacy; in my opinion, more privacy than transparency, but it depends on the person.
