On the 9th video of my 2024 Travels, I camp at the City of Rocks State Park in New Mexico. This is my kind of city! Although I had a "Rocky" start, things were better after admiring this truly unique State Park.

Slim, Idaho Spuds makes freeze-dried hash brown potatoes ! They come in small "milk carton" sized packages and are very easy to prepare. We find them at Costco and some other places as well. Tasty, easy and lightweight, what could go wrong? Gluten-free and NON GMO, just add water !

You can get dehydrated hash browns. They come in a small carton (like you'd get milk in). You pour hot water in the carton, rehydrate the hash browns, and fry them up. Anything left in the carton, you put in your fridge for breakfast, with eggs. :) Nice wildlife and rock sculptures. That one looked rock hard. :) Jon in rural BC, Canada

There are only a few non reservation sites for camping. Half of the hook up sites, I think it was the odd numbers and the non-hookup sites around 40 to 45. Everything else is reservation only. Sites 29 to 33 are dubious since the west windmill makes noises when the wind blows. The visitor center is only open when they have a volunteer to man it. There is one there on Monday's. It was closed Tuesday and Wednesday when we were there St. Paddy's day weekend.

Nicely done ! I knew one minute into this that I was going to enjoy your content so I subbed. I live in the T or C area and came here in my RV back in November of 2017. I came from CT with the express intention of living full-time in the state parks with an annual pass, which was very inexpensive. The camping used to be so easy. Very little hassle. But then Covid came and everything changed for the worst. They closed all the parks down during the pandemic, then when they reopened, everything was turned on its head. Used to be that those off-grid sites like those you tried to camp on were all first come, first served. And there used to be a certain number of sites with electric and water that were also only for first-come campers, so you always had a chance of finding one when you got there. But now all that is just a memory. And we never had to go through Reserve America. That ruins everything. I camped in the City of Rocks one week and it was really cool. I stayed in the rows where there was electric but those sites that are off-grid are spectacular. You had me scratching my head, trying to figure out who was following you with a camera. I thought it must be one of those 360 cameras that you can't see the pole it's attached to, but I couldn't see where it would be attached to you. Then toward the end I figured it was a drone. Very tricky, sir. I will check out the rest of your NM content before moving on to other places. NM has a lot to offer, which is why I stayed. I'm in an RV park fulltime now so my days of traveling came to an end for now. I've been parked for a number of years. I got really tired of moving around. Take care and thanks for the great content. ~ Cheryl ETA: I just noticed you don't respond to comments. I wonder if you even have it set-up to get alerts when someone comments on your videos. I hope you figure it out one day !

We have great state parks in New Mexico! All of them require you to make reservations through Reserve America. We are sorry to see that you did not camp at the state park in Alamogordo - that's our all-time favorite! At the City of Rocks, we camped in the section for the large RVs and it was SO dusty. People drive by and the dirt kicks up. Like you, we weren't thrilled with the unlevel spots. Thanks for showing the beauty of our state.

Great synopsis and photography; brings back memories when we camped there a couple years ago. City of Rocks Visitor Center is definitely worth the time as well. The overall "theme" of the park is sky, constellations, planets...all things astronomical due to the clear, incredible night skies. The trail Slim walked on through the rocks has interpretive signs that are placed proportionate to our planet system with the trailhead near the visitor center the center sun. So you'll get a few signs right away, and then they're spaced further apart as you walk. Campsites are named for constellations. It's really a wonderful gem. By the way, the two birds were Canyon Towhee and Rock Wren (along with raven and great horned owl). Well done. A fun place to stay; 2-3 nights will give you plenty of time to enjoy all the amenities. Oh, the Deming area has a few wineries that are worth a stop!!!

Thanks Slim for another entertaining video. An old army friend steered me to your channel awhile back and I am enjoying your adventures. I appreciate how much effort you put in your productions having to set up the camera and walk by the scene or drive out of a campsite. I spoke too quick this morning to my wife when at the end you drove out and left your chock block and stick behind. Seconds later you came back into frame to pick them up. It was then I said, how sharp am I, he had to come back and get the camera on the tripod anyway, duh! Thanks again, safe travels. We are RV'rs from Washington State but stay on our side of the rockies.

The time we camped at City of Rocks was an adventure. We arrived well after sunset and there is absolutely no artificial lighting back in the rocks. To find a site, we crept along in our truck and using a flashlight to check out options. When we could discern the red tail lights of other vehicles, we would move on until we found a vacant site. We could sense the looming monoliths around us, but not really see them. We were awestruck in the morning light to.find ourselves surrounded by those giant rocks. Your video is excellent and makes me want to make a return visit. And the showers are excellent!

Sorry you had to experience the reservation thing. I use to go to City of Rocks in past years, but now that they are mostly reservation I probably will not go back. Unfortunately, more and more campgrounds in the US are going to a reservation system which I don't care for. It makes it harder to just go with the flow, especially if you don't have internet access. I try to research ahead of time , but I don't pay for a camp site until I actually park in one, even if I have to drive / walk back to the entrance. Great video though! Thanks

It may have commented on earlier yet one of the best highlights of the City of Rocks is the search for the hidden petroglyphs. There are 10 of them and the visitors center has clues on how/where to find them. Some are very difficult to find. Great park, just there about a month ago.
