Interesting! We are from Shanghai but now working and living in Munich. We also love the great country of Germany a lot. Completely agree on the bias towards China from the western society, which I attribute to the racism buried deep in the mind. For most of the Chinese, we can only neglect the noises from the outside and focus on our own duties of improving the living standard for the other one billion populations.

China's metro is still a fascination to me. Be it in shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, shanghai. Convenient, integrated, strategic, lively, crowded but organically chaotic. Not to mention really affordable. It is sad that haters will look for a crack in anything and anyone just to make a trivial point. They exist so we can differentiate between darkness and light, positive and negative. Barretts, stay positive and well. Glad to be part of your journey. China is an inspiration and a lot of people are really missing out by being ill informed.

Scott Morrison bragged and claimed credit in April and May for Australia being one of the best countries in the world when it comes to small number of confirmed cases. Everyone knew there was nothing he did better than the other leaders in the world, Australia's success back then was largely contributed by our geographical location. In fact anything he did was always 2 steps behind other nations like New Zealand. Now in August New Zealand along with many Asian countries including China are still "clean", while in Australia people are in lockdown. Sad

Patronage is still in Covid-recovery phase. Weekday figures are still just hovering around the 10 million mark and weekend 5 million, so still some way to go to reach pre-Covid levels, though not far off now. Remember some parts of the economy are still in hibernation - mass (international) tourism, international business and universities etc - only when those have fully recovered will we see pre-Covid level passenger numbers.

Planning to work & live in Shanghai after I go back to China, even though I’m from Beijing 😁 Shanghai is where I can find those sycamore trees and patisseries like in Paris. And yes the metro is one of the reasons I’m eager to be back... cause metros in Paris can’t be compared with those in China, and sometimes it’s too smelly...Btw, the metro in Beijing is even longer and has a larger scale than Shanghai’s. Beijing metro line 1 was built in 1965s and it’s the first metro line in China, my grandpa was in the leading team and took the family on board to enjoy the first ride when they finished the construction. I’m so proud of him 🥰

Watching this reminds me of my first year in China, in Shanghai 2003. Coming from a small town in England the city blew my mind, it was more like entering another universe than another country. The start of the millennium was maybe a golden era in China: full of hope, optimism, wages/living standards really starting to rocket and fuck off massive skyscrapers popping up all over the place ... even the Western media was pretty positive and openminded about developments during that period. Still looking good, despite all the increasing sour grapes from the West. It’s going to be a tense few decades.

7:50 It is true that Chinese government is actually losing money in building metro and public facilities like that. Every single city is losing money for that, because the tickets are cheap and they need to renew and check the metro system like every 6 month or something to make sure everything is working well and efficiently. Anyway, government runs the metro company, they don't really care if they can earn from it.
