Favourite thing to do with Maui: prepping a Petra/ St. Basil's Cathedral city. I've realised that often the great thing about the desert hills tile isn't the extra yield, it's the ability to put tile improvements on tiles you otherwise couldn't. If you can get him in done just before an era ticks over you can turn 8 tiles into incredible ones for a tundra/ desert city. It's nuts. Also, these cities are less likely to take the tiles you want to use him on (flat desert etc.). Using his ability where you plan to settle is also ridiculous -> you can just get free culture from a new jade etc. Also, you can't override strategy resources, so you can use him to scan for things like uranium. I think it's criminal to put him in B. :P EDIT: Make sure to check the comments to this too, other people have had great ideas I hadn't even thought of!

Literally tried Sinbad for the first time 3 hours ago, and I laughed so hard at how stupidly broken he is. He generated about 3000 gold in total ON ONLINE SPEED which means he gains half the gold he normally gains. I insta bought markets and universities everywhere and was suddenly by far the strongest civ in the game!

My favorite use of Maui is in the mid-game, to make what would otherwise be a relatively unimpressive harbor into a completely bonkers one. If you have Hercules too then all the better. Step 1. Settle a new city Step 2. Place your harbor Step 3. Use Maui to add up to 3 new resources adjacent to it. Step 4. (optional) Use Hercules to finish the harbor immediately. If you already have a decent economy and have shipyards unlocked, that city can get going right away and will have extremely fast early growth.

This is interesting, but if I'm not playing a war game I like to keep them around as long as possible for the extra military strength. Having 2-3 heroes gives you a sizeable strength boost and allows you to keep a skeleton crew army without the AI wanting to declare war on you.

I really think Himiko might be most powerful early Hero. In one of my games, i met a lot of city states first and had some easy quests to complete. Long story short, i was able to levy 3 city-states armies at about turn 20-30 and got myself 3 more cities and 1 less neighbor essentially for free (for like 2 turns of production to get Himiko). Also she really helps to get and keep every city-state suzerainty much earlier into the game. Also she can get easy pantheon if you don't have any faith generation and don't want to waste 25turns with godking card. She is excellent scout. And she has longer lifespan than most heroes

Himiko is very similar like you said, she can be game breaking with Sid if you can use him for the money! I definitely wanna try Himiko Hungary run now that you mention it! xD

@@gunzakimbo I would argue that Anansi is the best Hero for the Religious victory because his ability allows you to invest in holy sites and getting a religion while making sure your keeping up with science and getting to the key civics like Theology and Reformed Church faster. Secondly, you should DEFINITELY try Himiko with Hungary the ability to use her charges to either gain suzerainty over city states or get free levy’s along with two envoys is phenomenal, especially the latter since you can save up on gold until you get the Foreign Ministry. That and her acting as a great general on top of the bonuses Matthias gives levied units makes him borderline impossible to stop!

@@Alexander_Chase22 Exactly! You can continue playing as you would normally (although its best to escort your civilians now, who knows where enemy scouts are) Wanted to go for religion? Great, build settlers! Wanted to build early campus? Nice, make yourself a settler. Why settlers? Depending on situation, your conquered enemy could have already built holy site/campus, so you are getting them great people points. And if you are going for domination, you can build your army and send them to other neighbor, because when you are done conquering with levied troops, you can teleport Himiko back to your capital for that huuuuuuuge +10 cs for easy conquest (which has 2 tiles range, same as great general, potato though it was only for adjacent) I had lucky Macedon game with early Himiko and i also had Wolin's suzerainty even before her. Game ended very-very fast

As others have said, Beowulf is incredibly valuable on the offense because he can delete units that are inside of districts. This makes sieges incredibly easy, since you can kill xbows and other units that would normally be invincible inside the the city until you've captured it. Another thing I'd like to point out is that Beowulf's ability doesn't count as a normal attack, which means that, if he has enough movement left, he can do a normal attack in addition to deleting a unit. Personally, I'd say he's A tier if you get him early (early rushes can be a very good way to boost one's economy, and this guy can make any civ effective at them), S if you're going for domination victory, and B tier otherwise.

one part of Maui that i noticed is that he can give you info on undiscovered strategic resource locations, if you try to use his ability and it doesn't let you then it means there is a resource there already. so if you are willing to save scum then you can scout out future locations for industrial zones, which is great for the Gaul. might also show leylines but i haven't tested that on secret societies mode

I'm doing a Mali run right now, and Hercules completed 6/7 of my earliest Holy sites. The 5th, 6th, 7th had a completion time of 100+ turns when I started their construction. Desert cities are notoriously hard to develop so having the Holy sites with desert folklore and work ethic solves the production part of development at least.

One thing to remember about Maui is that his ability also tells you where bonus resources that are not discovered are located by telling you that you can NOT place anything there, which makes it easier to place cities in locations which will get niter, coal, uranium, oil etc. in the future eras.

Beowulf is honestly really good on offense, when I found out that he can kill units in city centers it made me start prioritizing them early game. Especially when archers can just sit in a city center and crush any early game army, Beowulf makes clearing out a civs city much easier.

Something worth noting is Himiko is an unbelievably good 1st hero because getting suzerainty of multiple city states early will discover other heroes faster. Allowing you to likely get any hero you want as your second.

I used Beowulf in offence, and it has a good use in it. You can target cities with Beowulf's challenge, and destroy the defending unit from there. It really helps if the target has crossbows etc.

Maui has amazing synergy with things like Marshes. You can't put a farm there normally, but he's very likely to put something like rice on there, allowing you to keep the marsh and still build farm triangles. Try him out with Lady of Reeds and Marshes, trust me, it's really fun!

Note about Beowulf: his unique ability works with units *inside* cities. Which means if there's a troublesome crossbowman or something sitting in an enemy city and sniping your units, Beowulf can run up to the walls and delete that pesky unit. This alone makes him very valuable on offense.

One thing really great about Maui though is that his ability lets you also scout future strategic resources, because he can‘t use his ability on tiles that have strategics even if they aren‘t revealed yet. Also he can use it on coastal tiles which isn‘t immediately obvious I feel which could buff your harbours for example.

I would have put Anansi in S tier personally. The sheer amount of culture and science you can generate early with him is insane, all the while sabotaging an enemy's tiles. You can easily get 5 full techs and 5 full civics with him.

Anansi is pretty undervalued. If you get this as your first hero you are probably generating maybe 10 science/culture a turn by then. This unit walks up to your neighbor and extremely sets them back while giving you 360 science and 300 culture. That launches you so far ahead in tech and science that even if I had hercules offered to me I would get this guy first and resurrect him first too. If you get him 1 era later you might be generating like 30 of each a turn by then but he increased by 30 and now gives you a total of 540 science and 480 culture. This is absolutely broken and way harder to achieve than building more districts. Who wouldn't trade 1k faith for that much science and tech. Lets say hercules builds 3 +4 campuses. That would take nearly 100 turns to pay more than what anasi gave you. Much later in the game I would take hercules over anasi because grievances matter more and districts cost way more. Himiko is the most powerful hero by far. Only Hercules gets close. Her +10 ability is completely busted, it's literally 2 great generals. With only 4 units it's 40 strength, but can affect up to 17 units. The ability to suzerain and levy for free can give you 2 extra armies before you even have a settler. Plus, she is the best scout in the game. Getting the free envoy from finding city-states first is amazing early game. With her 40 turn lifespan, 4 movement and sight range she can reveal a whole map in the ancient era. Nothing comes close. It shocks me that this isn't engrained in the mind of a seasoned Civ6 player. Himiko is the best combat hero even in a game without citystates.

Hey Potato, I would bump up Hippolyta for its support capabilities. I’ve been playing her in domination games and she can basically double the efficiency of your bombards. That means taking down walls faster and earning xp faster. Very good in mid game when you mainly have 1 attack front. Definitely better than the twins, twins are good early game especially if you can get the units needed to trigger eurekas. However, loses effectiveness as you tech up because the base attack tends to be lower and you need to wait for heals, which eats into lifespan.

i like sun wu kong purely because of his historical context, which includes but is not limited to peeing on the pilar’s of the universe, graffitiing the pilar’s of the universe, rejecting a bunch of super powered weapons and instead just grabbing a massive size changing pilar and using it as a staff, as soon as he was born bowing to the four cardinal directions accidentally activating his laser eyes, and these are all just in the first 7 of 100 chapters of journey to the west

A very helpful vid and ranking. After playing with the heroes for a while, (Immortal level) for me Sun Wukong is a clear NO. 1 - a massive wartime economy boost, devastating the enemy economy and storming weak cities (all game long with as many resurrections as possible) , Himiko & Aanasi (early game essentials, Himiko getting city states to form a protective layer from agressive neighbours) and Aanasi scouting and robbing their land to blunt their war effort AND catching you up in culture and science. Sinbad's gold boosts are great at any time. Arthur was dissapointing until I was once almost overun by Samurai and crossbow barbarians, those questing knights soon turned the tables. Agree with your ranking of Beowulf too... laughing out loud as he effortlessly destroys ranged city units.

Love to see wukong getting love. I feel like maybe there are dime tactics youve left out or might be unaware of with a couple of heroes, kinda like how most people dont use wukong correctly, as the pillaging master. Hypolyta: can conquer cities by herself quickly. Sticking a unit to her is great, but its the wolverine regen that is her best ability. She tanks like no other unit. She also has a glitch which gives an extra turn to builders, so you can use two charges with one turn. She cant target the builder, but parking it on top of the unit she is targeting will give that extra turn to the builder, too. Arthur: another guy who just bowls through cities in the early game. Another guy who, through the same target glitch, can turn a builder with one charge into a questing Knight. His glitch doesnt make two knights, it just makes the builder the Knight instead of the unit you targeted on the same square. Pop 2 charges, trade be third for a knight. Makes scouts useful military units. And if you save his powers for the end of his lifespan, youre really getting more than just his lifespan out of him. Ive taken like 6 cities before the year 2000 bc using just arthur and one charge builders. Beowulf: the hero killer. All the heroes are cool units, but they all fear one among them. It sucks to fight against hypolyta or the twins, but its terrifying to fight Beowulf and he gives you perfect protection from the other heroes. He drives all other heroes before him. Maui: lets you be the first to build all the corporations. Just get them all by using maui to put down those luxuries you're missing. He can really help you become the monopoly.

One really good thing you can do with Maui is plop down a bunch of fishing resources adjacent to the tile you'll be building your Harbor on. It's a great way to get amazing Harbors. I used him in a recent game where I won a culture game as Japan and the cities would've struggled with production but I got the Habors to +6 or +8 base and then you double it and buy the shipyard so the city jumps up a lot in value. Other than that he's weak but that's a good advantage. Hercules is definitely the best the early game potential building 3 districts instantly and Sinbad is amazing too especially for Gold and Era score which has a ton of value on top of map knowledge. Great tier list!

As somebody who doesn't really play domination much, Beowulf and Arthur are fun to use and my go to for attacking cities. Beowulf's ability is awesome to help get stronger enemy units out of the way. Makes it much easier

With everything I've learned from these comments (and there was alot of ways to use these heroes that I didn't realize) I think I would change the tier list as follows: S: Anansi, Hercules, Sinbad A: Beowulf, Himiko, Hippolyta, Sun Wukong B: Hunapu & Xbalanque, Mulan, Oya C: Maui D: King Arthur
