These two will never know the impact they had on me as a child. My parents divorced when I was 11, and the first thing I remember happening was a package arriving at our house, addressed from my aunt three states away. It was this album, along with a letter. It was originally a gift for my mother as she grieved for our family being torn apart, but it much sooner became a crutch for my younger self. Ok, am I the only one that doesn't see it as a breakup song/ballad? To me its more recognizing that there are hard times in a relationship, and when its hard to love them during the hard times, you still do. This is how I felt about leaving my ex. It was so bitter and heartbreaking. We went through so much together. He was a terrible alcoholic that just couldn't give it up for his family, 20 years I tried. I don't know if anyone notices John Paul is using a gold sobriety coin to play his guitar in this video. My ex passed away at 46 years old. My 3 kids were young adults but we were still devastated. I always stayed on good terms with his family and we grieved together. I come back to this song from time to time. It is probably the only way I can sum up my feelings about everything. I could have never imagined when I first heard it going through our divorce that this is the way it all would end and now its been 11 years.

I read time after time in every Civil Wars video's comment section that these two had an affair or were in love with each other. I always wonder if it was all the speculation that caused a rift. Joy's husband was the manager and there was a lot of pressure from what I've read and tried to learn. I think they had chemistry like no other but it was a professional love for each other and they sold it to us like two great stage actors. All the speculation, the creative differences, the pressure from Joy's husband, and I assume John's wife wondering if there is any truth to all the talk, I think that could ruin anyone. Whatever the truth is I wish them nothing but the best and I'm glad this exists. John and Joy, I know you will never read this, but thank you for the beauty you created.
