Okay, a possible interpretation to this song connecting to the video is that she is constantly on the move, and where ever she goes there seems to be tragedy and heart break, yet she always manages to escape it by hopping on the next train. So, "I wish you were the one that got away," refers to the people that have to stay and face all these horrors (destruction, abuse, death). For them it's probably harder to pick themselves up because it's all they've ever known. For her it's part of life.

About making a mistake and wishing that person had been the one to get away....instead of having been the one who stayed and issues ensued. But then that's just my take on it...from my life. Everyone's life has a different spin to put on it. ;) To me there would be a follow up song about how much you learned from the one that didn't leave....and that whole journey.

This was shot in Arkansas, near Ozarks. That train is a passenger train that does tours from Fort Smith to Northwest Arkansas. The creek is in Mountainburg off of 282... and the city is Chester. lots of cool shots depicting just how some towns near me really don't change with the times.

For me, the best part of movies, shows, social media, commercials, etc is discovering music I may not have heard otherwise. Especially because the music in a particular scene is carefully selected to support or convey some sort of emotion or feeling, so that the viewer/listener is able to connect with the narrative on a deeper level that is more realistic to them.

i feel like the video shows how we want to make genuine connections with people but for various reasons we end up with hurt feelings along the way. the three guys are biking together but something arises and one is singled out and attacked. the older friends are keeping each other company but one of them dies in his sleep and one is left behind feeling sad. the girl kisses the guy but the other girl gets upset over it and those intimate feelings aren't the same.

Not only do I love all of the songs from The Civil Wars, but I must say that this music video for The One That Got Away is by far the most raw and heart-wrenching music video that I ever seen. This reminds me of a critically acclaimed indie film that would be viewed at the Sundance Film Festival receiving awards for such excellence. It occurred to me recently whilst watching a documentary on Johnny Cash, that the estranged relationship between hiself and June Carter was hard for her as she was brought up as a devout Christian and couldn't comprehend the sinful feelings she had towards him whilst she was married. It then came to me that it maybe the same way between John Paul and Joy (same first initials too!). Despite the feelings they may have for each other it will never happen! The new album is so melancholy& sad :-(

But in another interview I read she said if you want to know what happened to the Civil wars listen to the last album! She also said there were so many RUMORS, ABOUT THEM and she didn't understand why! REALLY ,she's a grown woman! It's the way they sang together, the loving eyes, the body language, the WORDS OF THE SONG'S, and all the photos of them being close! Wow, such an intense video. I like that there are two different ways to see the song. The studio cut seems like they are speaking to each other about an issue that they were having and this video makes the song alter in a way that they music is talking about experiences and some that you wish never happened but all experiences must happen, you just can wish them away or live safely.
