Good thing you remembered to discharge that 250V cap! Happy new year!

Those zoom ins while you were probing the live circuit were so ominous. They signaled to me, "look close, it's about to happen."

Is it not a standard capacitor psu. The impedance of the capacitor limiting the current. With a resistor across the cap to discharge it when disconnected supply ?
@pileofstuff5 жыл бұрын
I didn't dive very deep into that. It looked like the big cap was in parallel with the incoming line voltage, but I can't be certain.

I need 2 of those fuses to repair my clappers. Where can I find those?? Pleas help. Thanks

I bought this assortment of fuses: ebay.to/2VMrYm6

The old rule of thumb rating a fuse half as much again as the maximum power draw seems to have been followed with a 3 amp fuse where the max rating is 2 amps. At least that indicates some thought has gone into the design.

lol I remember a few months ago seeing a comment that you were akin to AvE on Prozac. Now you're branching into ElectroBOOM on prozac too? hehehe. Love ya man, keep up the good work.

You could try it in the outlet where the tree was. Put some small lamp on it and let you pooch try it ... You might teach your dog a new trick ;-)

Hello Pileofstuff. I just looked at your tear-down video and saw what is wrong with mine. My fuse is blown. Can you advise me how and where to buy the fuse for the Clapper? What is the fuse power rating? I would rather fix-it vs. buy another one. I miss being about to Clap and turn on my stair lights when I go to my second floor. Thanks you in advance for your help.
@pileofstuff2 жыл бұрын
For the fuse rating, just look at the device's rating - on mine it was embossed on the plastic "max *** ampers" or something like that. It should also be written on the fuse in tiny lettering. I happened to have some I bought a long time ago, but I also bought more recently from ebay. Try this search: pileofstuff.ca/r/la6y9

You nearly said ' Even if it wasn't broken already, it will be after my tear down.' lol. Neat unit though, shame about the secret circuit blob, but i imagine some kind of decade counter could be rigged up to a standard clap for a similar effect.

I would mark the Amps or Watts near the outputs, if it ever gets used for something else ! and buy the dog 4 mittens

If you put back together and you have parts left over and it still works, your smarter than the person who designed it. Unless it burns your house down later. ; )

I have a suggestion. Take a GFC Outlet apart, since they are prone to going bad. The NEW units have self-testing abilities!?

I wonder if I have an older one around here somewhere. Interesting. Thanks.

Enjoyed the tear-down, however it looks like the sensitivity switch cover was left off in the re-build. When this happens to me there's always that mental struggle of "do I pull it apart again just to put a small part back". I guess safety of the device must be the overriding consideration.

I plugged a heater into my clapper and clapped it on with my lamp. The lamp and heater are ok but the clapper no longer works. Lesson learned.

Too bad my new clapper doesn't seem to have any fuses! It stopped working after someone plugged the vacuum cleaner into it and clapped.
@pileofstuffАй бұрын
That's a lot of current. It could have overwhelmed the relay if there isn't a fuse to protect it.

You could get the dog's nails clipped. That will stop the false triggers (ask me how I know). OTOH fun to see The Clapper's guts, so there's that.

Sometimes it's just a bad solder joint. Resoldering with good hot soldering iron helps. Pbfree is bad thing. Causes the problems, mostly in chinese electronics
