This is why bowling is brutally tough especially on the sport stuff. And why it is very hard to produce exactly 2 shots with exactly the same rotation tilt speed loft and timing not to mention brain farts and our inability to think about the next shot after missing a 10 pin. Keep up the good work!!

This is probably THE hardest video to watch because my entire focus in 2023 is to limit my inconsistencies. EVERYONE has them and the technology within equipment covers a vast number of them. I got back in the bowling in 2016 after a 20 year break. Hit a Storm/Roto demo and bought a Code Black over the Phaze 2. I’m not entirely sure if that was the right choice, but the Code gave me silly results (267 out of the box). That being said, I may add one ball this year to my bag. I currently carry two balls and a spare ball, but I think I need something shinier with a medium strength core to complement what I already have (Incite, MVP Attitude). The Fate play because I love the dig that the ReX cover seems to give. The Phaze 5 may be the better option because of R2S and I am yearning to throw the velocity core again. Regardless, you are my favorite guy to watch, and I appreciate your knowledge, in-depth reviews (including your report cards), and your unbiased opinions even if the ball doesn’t fit in your bag. I’ll be re-watching this entire series from the classroom quite a few times. Thanks again, Luke.

Honestly this can work. I find that during leagues if I try to adjust my throw and manipulate all these different variables then I am worse off than if I just blame something external and keep calm and focused. Me frustrated and trying to do it right while fixing problems is actually worse than me calm and just doing my routine. Practice is different though. It's not a long term solution but sometimes it just needs to be something else's fault.

Yeah I've been super careful lately not to over-use my reality. I got it earlier this year, and it probably already has 70-100 games on it. I really don't want it to wear out too soon, so I've been trying to find other balls in my arsenal that can take over sooner in transition. Also, spending less time in it during practice. Fortunately, I've been able to add a ball here or there to my arsenal of late, so each of them will see less play. It's largely why my Zen (my most recent addition) has been able to maintain its out-of-box reaction for so long. I rarely see enough transition in league (3v3) to need to move to it, so it has sat in a more niche position for me. As part of the league I'm bowling in now, we get two bowling balls from a list of a bunch (the league doesn't have payouts, just the balls), so I'm trying to fill in gaps, but also start to create some overlap. For example, one of the balls I'm getting is the Zen Master, which I hope will not only fill the gap between my reality and zen (I have an ancient C300 Freeze that's scuffed up to sort of fill for now), but also to take on some of the situations that I'm currently using the Reality for.

The ball in my bag that highlights my errors most is my Ice, especially on 10 pins. "Oh, you missed a board left? Wouldn't that be a shame if there were a dry spot so I can hook like reactive, even though I'm not? OPE, LOOK AT THAT, you suck! lololol"
@feddyvonwigglestein34812 жыл бұрын
I think there is value in this, but at the same time I think for some people it just leads to over-thinking. Sometimes you just need to throw the ball, and if it feels good but isn't reacting, switch out of it. Just clear your mind and execute. This kind of thinking will undoubtedly lead to paralysis of analysis for some folks, probably including myself, who aren't equipped to properly analyze our throws. Your comment about other people complaining about carry when you see them not release the ball correctly: most people can't tell when they're doing something wrong. I worked on trying to stop from getting the ball behind my back, and thought I'd figured it out...until I watched myself. Nothing I did worked until someone with an eye for things changed where I hold the ball in my set up. Basically, I think these kinds of videos are more useful for teachers, or veterans of the sport, rather than for inexperienced people trying to self-diagnose their issues. Speaking as someone who's bowled for years but only taken it truly seriously for less than a year.

I like the idea of not wearing out your go-to balls in practice! What would you recommend looking out for in a practice ball then? Would you point out specific balls, or coverstock/core type combinations that really highlight the specifics we need to work on realising and improving in the physical game?
@LukeRosdahl6 ай бұрын
Depends on what you're doing, plastic or urethane for drills are great because they can take the abuse. If you're practicing, just using older balls you don't use any more works well

Luke, great stuff as always. Another tell tale sign of a bad shot is the way the ball goes through the pins. Example on your P2 flat seven. That is the shot that I see the most of and hearing complaints about in league. Not bad carry just a bad shot! #stuff I know you know already! Question: What type grips are you using?

Awesome video as always Luke! @6:21 you say that this P2 is a little straighter off the end of the pattern - is that down to layout, or is that something that can happen ball to ball? I have two Phaze 3's, and despite the layouts being identical, it does feel like my second one is a little straighter on the backend so I was worried I was going a little insane
@LukeRosdahl2 жыл бұрын
This one is more layout, it's a different layout than I typically use. If I'd have gone pin down it would have blended more or if I'd have gone stronger pin it would have been more continuous. Your new P3 might have been the cover gloss issue, my newest P3 did the same thing until I reset the cover

I've actually got a guy on my team that is really far the opposite direction. He will never ever blame the ball. Whatever he puts on the rack to start will be there all set. He can have a ball burning up and go from looking at a 700 to maybe 600. But he blames execution even though he's using a solid asymmetric on the game 3 burn.
@PrivateJoker13862 жыл бұрын
It's tough to get a feel for honestly. I know I've sat in a ball too long because I feel I didn't throw the prior one "perfect" even though I THOUGHT I should change. gotta trust those instincts sometimes.

@BeeDoubleUDee2 жыл бұрын
I’m going to play devils advocate a little here. If you have a less than ideal reaction you’ll spend most of the time trying to create a decent reaction which usually leads to gripping, over rotation etc. I’ve found that if the player has a basically sound game their ability to freewheel and make more consistent releases improves almost exponentially. It relaxes the arm swing and allows the player to mentally relax and allow muscle memory to take over. I’m not saying a good reaction will automatically make a bad bowler a good one, but it WILL make a good bowler look like a far better bowler.
@LukeRosdahl2 жыл бұрын
Well and I covered that in the video too, good ball reaction can definitely contribute to good execution
@TonySnider692 жыл бұрын
I might be completely ignorant. Is a video talking about ball speed, rotation rate, and ball selections effect on where you stand on the lane possible?
@LukeRosdahl2 жыл бұрын
Actually yeah . . because as I film and move around on the lane, I'm moving before the lane is making me move, so as I get deeper, I slow my speed down and up my rev rate to kind of show what the ball is going to look like across the lane on a fresh shot. Lots of people don't understand that, so they think as they move, they're just going to keep throwing it exactly the same and that that should work. That's a pretty good idea, I'll use that soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video, and agreed with you up until the point you said: "do not use the stuff you take to league for practice." While I understand your position, some of use don't have the luxury to buy multiple balls. Due to either monetary constraints or space constraints. Especially for folks who live overseas. For example, if I want to buy a new new ball, it will cost me around $275~$325 per new ball. That's also including drilling. Sure, your bowling balls will "wear out" faster if you practice with what you take to league, but if you take the time to clean your ball after every session and rejuvenate your bowling balls every 100~160 games or so, it'll last a long while. At least a few years or more. Other then these two points, I still agree with everything else you talked about in your video. Thank you and keep up the good work.
@LukeRosdahl2 жыл бұрын
I mean, that's about what it costs people here now. It's not a cheap sport. Ball maintenance is a given, but this video was more for people at the level where they've committed a lot of time and money into bowling. Sure there are plenty of people who have 1 or 2 balls and don't have any other options, but what I meant was that given the choice, you shouldn't practice with stuff you bowl competition with. Instead of getting something you don't end up liking and getting rid of it, keep it to practice with.
@MrJakr42 жыл бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl Hey Luke, thanks for your reply. I wasn't aware bowling ball prices and drillings had gone up in price back in the US, living in Japan currently and like you said.
