I prefer the theory that the Dark Angels chapter is actually made up of the surviving Squats. Each Marine is two Squats in a suit of power armour, but there was an odd number which is why the Chapter Master has that curiously small fellow following him around. ;P

Military aristocracy (or a ruling class composed by a king an his closest/best band of fighters) is taken straight from ancient and medieval germanic and norse societies, which fits with the whole anglosaxon/viking aescetic the squats and fantasy dwarfs usually sport. If they disliked the name "Squats", they could have just retconned it to be a derogatory name that humans referred to them by. And all previous materials related to that name was because they were written/translator be imperial scribes who had the proclivity to use that term.

The real reason squats got removed was because the Mechanicus got gealous that squat engineers are actually qualified engineers and have an understanding of how technology works, rather than relying on religious ceremonies and percussive maintenance.
