Imagine going into a game saying that your team was terrible, that they were going to lose by 40 points, and your only chance at winning was if the other team forfeited and just never showed up? Well, in 1966 prior to a game against the Green Bay Packers, that's exactly what San Francisco 49ers head coach Jack Christiansen said. And the end result of those comments may surprise you

I think what the 49ers coach said about his team losing by 40 points against the packers got them fired up to beat them for the upset-that’s my opinion on the matter! 😊😊😊😊😊😊

These deep dives have some pretty hilarious moments. The coach really thinking that they'd only win if the Packers straight no showed is just wild and the script writers really went nope, let's edit that real quick 😂

In Jack Christiansen's defense, this team was a long way from Bill Walsh and Joe Montana. If you knew what the Niners were like before then, you'd give up on them too.

I’ve always been a Chiefs fan due to growing up in Missouri. But I also grew up watching Montana, Young, Rice…. But before 1980 was a very dark time for the franchise.

It's irony that the 49'ers won by one point. Great reverse psychology actually. The 49er's ended up 6-6-2 that season.

Christensen was such a shit coach that he couldn't even coach the team to a loss in a game his team wasn't expected to even be competitive in.

By '66, the Packer running game was no where near what was in the early 60's, but Starr was at his peak best in 1966 and the GB defense was the best in pro football.

They actually ran for more yards and a higher yards per carry in '67 without Hornung and Taylor and with a rash of injuries at the position.

@@DolFan316 Better, but not by much. Still no where close to the early 60's teams. Starr and the defense won those last 3 Championships.

He was basically telling his team "I think you suck. Prove me wrong." This was 100 percent reverse psychology. And they ended the season exactly at .500 (6-6-2), with a point differential almost even, so whatever Christiansen was doing, it did right the ship.

Huh, a reverse phycology play *actually working*. Well done, Coach. As for the 2024 season, I predict Mike McCarthy will have a six-pack of Dumb Decisions. I also want to see something make the "In Defense Of" series (as of when I comment; it stands as 18 IDO to 142 DD. A ratio of nearly 8-1)

PS to no one’s surprise Christiansen was canned after ‘66 and replaced by Dick Nolan who guided the Niners to three division titles in the early 70s

It's also worth noting that there was a rematch later in the year at Lambeau, which the Packers won convincingly.

That narrow win over the Packers was probably the upset of the season in 1966. Though, the Vikings also pulled off an upset win over the Pack at Lambeau in week 9. Those were the only 2 losses for the mighty Packers in 1966, which was also the year of the first Super Bowl.

At least Christiansen didn't ask the opposing head coach to "Take it easy" on his team unlike Dave Shula, Bengals head coach, who said that about his father, Don Shula, Miami Dolphins head coach.

When the 0-7 Cincinnati Bengals in the 1994 season played the two-time defending Super Bowl Champion Cowboys with third-string QB Jeff Blake starting due to injuries to David Klingler and Donald Hollas, Las Vegas didn't offer a point spread since they felt it would be impossible to get even money on the game. The Cowboys barely won, 23-20.

@@msarzo Wow. Had to look up McCully and he is impressively inept. Like Tomsula, he was a position coach promoted two pay grades. However, Tomsula lasted a full season while McCully only made it nine games, losing eight of them, before being fired. It's still a toss-up though. Tomsula succeeded Harbaugh and was mediocre with a team that had lost a conference title game two seasons previously and a Super Bowl the year before that. But the Niners were a miserable team in the late '70s. McCully was the third head coach in three seasons, Bill Walsh took over in '79 and it still took him six seasons to turn the team into a winner. Ed diBartolo being committed to making the team a winner helped.
