Excellent job of laying out the reasons this didn't work. I'm a diehard Stevie Nicks fan. She's often been asked to sing the same songs over and over again (typically "Landslide" or "Rhiannon" from Fleetwood Mac or "Stand Back" or "Edge Of Seventeen" from her solo career). The saving grace for her is that she varies the performance often enough where it's slightly different each time. That said, asking her to do the same song over and over again is enough to bore her diehard fans, never mind the casuals or the non-fans who actually know that she sang the same track previously. I agree with you: If the NFL had chosen a different act and a different song (or even Bon Jovi singing a different song from "It's My Life"), it might have worked. Singing the same song on three different nationally-televised you-get-non-football-audience occasions doesn't work so well. It was definitely worse than Rich Gannon's passer rating in the game itself.

Was Gannon's performance worse than spiking the ball into the ground on every single play? 🤣

Msarzo keep in mind the Super Bowl is also shown in dozens of countries as well i.e Canada, the UK, etc. So it's more than a "National Telecast" like Sunday or Monday Night Football shown only in America during the regular season. C’mon guys…. there’s no baffling mystery here. It’s very very straightforward. This was a a branding effort designed to stir up feelings of patriotism and all things American in the wake of the 9/11 attacks one year prior. The way they chose to do that was to closely associate “America’s Band” Bon Jovi with the “America’s Game”, North American Football. So they chose to bookend the entire season by featuring an opening game showing, a closing game showing, plus one high profile mid-season performance of that band doing that song. Their goal was that people would immediately associate one with the other. The way to do that is through repetition. Reinforce the brand association. And the industry-recognized number of times it takes for an advertising message to have a chance of sticking? THREE TIMES. Hence the three identical performances. There you have it. It’s that simple. It didn’t work, of course, but it was by no means an oversight on anyone’s part.

I wonder if you'll talk about competition to the halftime show. The two most notorious cases I could think of was the first time that was tried with Fox's In Living Color's Men on Football skit live that was going to take material from the first half of the football game to prove that it was not prescripted humor. The other example was Nipplegate, which ironically I was watching for the Lingerie Bowl at halftime on a pay-per-view. That was the first time in a long time I visited my friends after moving away and we had an annual Super Bowl party as well as a couple other get togethers a year until the two main people we visited died. Yeah I thing thing is the people who would have appreciated Janet Jackson's bare breast were seeking it in a place where they wouldn't get it: namely hoping for a waist tackle slipping below the panty line and pulling a thong off on a pay-per-view that was automatically rated TVMA because of the potential was high for violating material. I know live shows were not supposed to be rated, but ever since the Bret Hart Incident on Monday Night Raw (he was throwing around BS's and GDs every 5 seconds in a minute or two,) live shows had to compute a likely or a target rating for their show. Even basic cable live shows like Raw. I don't think even to this day the NFL football games are rated. Even though it's in the realm of likelihood that you'll see a lot of physical contact that will cause injuries and occasionally bad sportsmanship to the point of being excessively and pointlessly violent, (like the Miles Garrett helmet bop, which the only thing that saved Miles Garrett from criminal prosecution was that that helmet bop was not premeditated but just a natural action of fighting)which because of the potential I would probably rate as TVPG, because it rarely happens but when it happens it's causes trauma in the viewers especially those below 10.

Unfortunately, although the viewership for this episode was higher than for a normal "Alias" , it did not give the show any appreciable boost going forward. I have often thought that the kickoff should move back to the original 6:18 p.m. Eastern when the game first went prime time, meaning the game would be concluding around 10:00 p.m.,; have a 15-20 minute postgame, and the lead out show start around 10:20-10:30. I am curious what time the postgame will sign off this year, considering NBC is using the Winter Olympics for the lead out, the first time any network has ever aired the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics on the same day.

The whole premise is flawed because the game is played on Sunday evening in the east. A substantial chunk of the viewers turn off the tube and/or leave the party. Playing the game on Saturday, or moving the start to 4pm eastern, would be more consistent with the paradigm.

I frankly have never understood having a SIX HOUR pre-game show. Now, I realize the game has to start later than a normal game because if it started at 1pm on the east coast it would be 11am in the west. But why not move it up to, say, 4pm east coast, which still puts it at 1pm in the west?

Eric Jag has done previous videos on why the SB has had a 635pm (ET) kickoff for at least 35-40 years now. Before SB 12 in Jan. '78 (Cowboys over Broncos)the SB usually until Jan. 1977 had a 3-4pm (ET) kickoff. Please look at the highlights of the first 10 "Big Games" usually in those days, most of the game was played in sunlight.

At the AFL Grand Final they do a post game show. Most people have left so they kinda move everyone to a specific section and rather than the stage being in the middle of the ground it's much closer to the audience. You should look up Jack Riewoldt signing Mr Brightside with The Killers after winning the premiership

4:39 - "If you didn't know anything it (One Shining Moment) going in, you know right away what you're in for when you hear the opening line of 'The ball is tipped.'" When I was young (and not yet into basketball), the first time that I ever heard "One Shining Moment," it was used in the telecast of the final game at the original Comiskey Park (Home of MLB's Chicago White Sox). In that version, the first line was "The gun goes off," instead of "The ball is tipped." That version can be heard here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imrMo3WZaZqarqM This was in 1990, three years after it had debuted as the song to close the NCAA Tournament. I have never heard this version anywhere else, so I emailed David Barrett to see if he knew of an existing studio copy. Unfortunately, he didn't, but he did inform me in his reply that "The gun goes off" was originally the first line. Again, unfortunately, the email is long gone (This was at least 10 years ago) but I did copy and paste that part of his reply into the One Shining Moment Wikipedia page, where it still remains today: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Shining_Moment

Great Video: Some more interesting thoughts on this .. JBJ was actually supposed to be a 3-Song performance but ABC was already running so far over and viewership was done before the end of the 3rd quarter. So they cut the song to 2 and only aired 1 The failure really comes in the form of the blowout ; The game was anti-climatic as Tampa had won by halftime and sealed midway through the 3rd quarter (also see the Bill Fallaghan controversy : Tim Brown & Jerry Rice assert that Callaghan threw the game) The viewership momentum was dying down before end of the 3rd and we had 2 concerts by that time now. People were turning tvs off and leaving the bars , going to bed and moving on. There wouldn't be a OSM (as you state) as NCAA-MM is a rather short contest and consistently on good running time The Super Bowl is a Loooong day for the broadcasting team(s) and you just can't maintain those massive viewership numbers by forcing it the way the NFL has "Pigs get fat" and the NFL got fat during SB XXXVII (37) by attempting the 3rd Concert at 10:00 - 10:28 PM- EST has been deemed the SB post game show sweet spot (I learned this whole interning at ESPN in 2016**) per marketing and advertising data from league sources. - Alias began at 11.01 and had 17m viewers ( 27.9M viewers is the average) Side Note: Friends 2nd Season Premier still remains the most viewed Post/SB Broadcast with 54M Viewers!! (😇 💩) - and STILL ranks #1 since 1/28/1996 SB XXX (30) Pittsburgh V Dallas twenty -six years later

Meh, having Bon Jovi perform the same song 3 times during the season is akin to how their music was played on the radio/MTV. If you listened to the radio or watched MTV for more than an hour back then, you were guaranteed to hear whatever song of theirs was popular at that time at least twice during that hour...
