How was it unpopular? It peaked within the top 20 in 18 countries, the top 10 in 13 countries, the top 5 in 8 countries including number 2 in the UK. Finally it made it to number one in both Poland and New Zealand, the latter where it remained for four weeks! A highly successful song commercially.

Other songs by Michael that showcase a gritty vocal delivery are Scream, D.S, Come Together and Morphine. He was very underrated as a vocalist in my opinion. He could go from Pop to Rock, R&B to Gospel and a Broadway show-tunes style of singing.

I think my favorite part here was how you were told there was a great Slash solo in this but weren't warned there would be TWO of them, the milder one and the FIRE one, so you thought the first one was 'it' but then were unexpectedly hit by the FIRE one in the end 😂

also remember his father Joe played guitar and all his kids with Jackson 5 played instruments and this was way before digital era of music so MJ understood music sound and production to the nth degree. Jennifer Batten (great lead guitarist) toured with him in 80's and 90s and would suggest Heartbreak Hotel live from Wembley..

He does a lot of the gritty vocals from Bad album onwards, even in his more pop flavored tunes. I love grit in vocals and MJ is the king of grit. Also the king of rhythm. His rhythmic pop tunes from Bad onwards with the grit, it's the best pop ever created.
