The Collector Is Massively Underrated

I’m late to the party here, but I’m very glad to have finally arrived.
Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton have carved out a nice career in horror, but their claim to fame is The Collector series.
In what is intended to be a trilogy, The Collector merged multiple sub genres beautifully, and showed massive upside.
So what happened, and how can they recapture that?

Really enjoy both movies for different reasons. Appreciate the grimey atmosphere The Collector and Josh Stewart was absolutely awesome in it. The Collection features great action, expands the twisted nature of the villain, and the way they filmed the intricacies of the traps was well done. Hopefully Stewart and Fitzgerald are able to return for the upcoming third installment. Excited to see what Dunstan and Melton have planned.

When I heard that the first movie was originally going to be a Saw prequel, I was there opening weekend in the theater. When the sequel was announced, I was there opening weekend again. I remember enjoying both films, but I agree with you the first one is better. I own both on DVD, and your video has inspired me to watch both movies again. I hope that the third one could eventually see the light of day, especially with Saw X being successful.

I still remember going to see this at a late screening with a whole bunch of friends from school, crowded theater, and all of us shitting all over it. My friend Mark especially hated it. It ruined his night. But in years since I've mellowed to it. Still don't love it, but don't despise it.

Ya, The collector is one of the few 2000's horror movies I actually really like. I watched it a year or two after it came out and really liked it. I liked it enough to where I was hyped for The collection and I went and saw it on the big screen...and man, was I disappointed. Super disappointed. First off, it's a short movie. It's an action horror movie instead of an old school traditional cat and mouse thriller slasher, part 2 also felt a lot more like a modern horror game, then an actual horror movie. Also....what happens? He's kidnapped by the collector and taken to his lair OFF SCREEN. He then escapes from the lair OFF screen, and he is the one who brings the SWAT team, police to his lair/collection? I was looking forward to and expecting for the movie to start with him being trapped in the lair and trying to find a way out and everything escalates, etc. Now your telling me the fan base think part 2 is better then the first movie? Apparently I was the only one who was greatly disappointed? I thought, assumed I was in the majority; the sequel The collection was an inferior disappointment. "Almost everything good about The collector is gone in The collection" Yep. Absolutely. "Everything that made The collector tense and suspenseful and really gave that air of menace over the entire movie is gone in The collection. 10 - 15 minutes into the movie we're introduced to this kill scene which is just kills for kills sake. Completely out of character for the collector we have seen in the first film." Again, Absolutely agree. You sound like ME when I first saw it. That is exactly what I thought, as well as "this is like a video game" and of course The collector wasn't like a video game. I think one reason why I like the first movie is because it was an old school slasher and story telling in a home invasion, modern horror all mixed together and all very well balanced. It was modern but not too modern. it was traditional and old school but not too old school. It was a Home invasion movie but not too Home invasion. Personally, I've never liked the Saw movies. "It's also a bummer to see Arkin refuced to kind of like a secondary character." Exactly. Part 2 took away almost everything that was so great about the first movie. "I didn't like so many throw away characters that meant nothing. I didn't like these attempts as mass casualty events and these big action sequences." I can kind of accept the action sequences. Like when The collector has the rifle and when he goes that hanging thing. That was pretty cool. But in context of everything else, and the massacre at the club, etc, ya. Not good. Felt like bad fan fiction. Take for instance....the "mindless zombies" he releases...seriously? Seriously?! The entire film really came across to me, when I watched it in theaters and later a second time at home like a "Mainstream Hollywood action horror film that feels more like a video game then anything else." And fairly generic. Nothing really that special. So despite the awesome soundtrack, some of the directing, and action I was super disappointed. Also......The collector is an awesome slasher villian. Screw Art the clown. It's a travesty that The collector became a cult classic and so underrated while Art the clown has gotten so big after 2 movies and a half, before the second movie even came out too.

Do people actually prefer the sequel I never knew that. I don’t remember much about the sequel but the first movie had some scenes that always stayed with me. I’m definitely due for a rewatch it’s been a while.

I prefer the first as well, the whole turning your place of safety into a death trap was non-existent in the sequel. And yeah the entire vibe was different, can't say I strongly dislike it just indifferent about it compared to the first. I can still watch them back-to-back tho.

Both of them are heavily underrated bro and I'm so glad I got to experience both of these films on the big screen! I hate that the 3rd movie was cancelled because I would love to see another one.

Wasn't 'The Collected' shutdown cuz of the virus we aren't allow to talk about, or am I mixing that up with 'Strangeland 2'? So many movies and shows were lost/cancelled because of it.

The sequel has the big initial glorious mass kill scene that I think make people think the film is better than it is. I like it tho, but the original Collector was the superior film.
