That was a pretty good freestyle drawing of Catwoman and the ease in which he did it puts the lie to the crap about "Bob Kane never drew anything"! It's also not surprising to me that when he drew it, it was done in the style the way she looked in the 40s and 50s as if no time had passed. I remember seeing Walt Disney doing the exact same thing when someone asked him to draw Mickey Mouse! It was a 1920s style Mickey and not like the then-current version!

are you kidding me?! if I went to a comic book company wit drawings as simple as that, it's inevitable that they wouldn't hire me

Super Gamer so he's not comic book material. Don't get me wrong, the guy's a genius, but he's not the BEST artist in the world
@pulsarstargrave2568 жыл бұрын
+Bollox Magee He never claimed to be. Kane was a cartoonist and the drawing standards of today weren't nearly as high in the infancy of comic books. That's how artists like Kane and Joe (Superman) Shuster got work, they weren't ready for the "big time" of newspaper strips or advertising! I admit I prefer cartoonists to slick illustration that's why I appreciate Kane's style!

Pulsar Stargrave okay, fair point, but I still think that people give him a bit too much credit for art. But he deserves ALL credit where it's due in the creation of perhaps the BEST hero in the world-BATMAN!!!!

I like how at the beginning he was bragging that he was a genius, and by the end he was making excuses for how poor his drawings were.

Great video. Never saw it before. The Jerry Robinson stuff was really REALLY interesting. I always knew of the turmoil but to see Kane so obviously bothered by it was extremelly telling at how raw this was with him. I DO think that theres something there that is more than it seems. And I DO think that Robinson probably has more credit than what Kane is giving him. Great video and Stan was very very graceful through it all. :)

Back when I first heard of this whole Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson and Bob Kane turmoil - I took it seriously. But seeing this now, with Bob being so old and all, I honestly think it was all just them poking fun at one another. Sure, Bill Finger isn't on the, "Characters created by ______" with Bob Kane, but I believe at one point Bob cleared that he did in fact regret not giving some of the copyright credit to Finger. Nonetheless, I don't see them bickering as much as I see it as two old guys throwing jokes and satire around.

I don't think Kane regretted not giving him a share of the copyright but not giving him a byline. There's a HUGE difference. You can give somebody a byline or let them sign it if they are an artist, but that doesn't mean you've given them partial ownership. Kane would have been a fool to do that. Why? Because of what I learned about Jack Kirby. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby were partners who created Captain America but Simon never had Kirby sign a "work-for-hire" contract. Sounds harmless, right? But Kirby wasn't a business man and let Joe handle the deals with the publishers. Fast forward several years to the late 1960s and Marvel approached Kirby on the issue of Captain America and asked him to sign a piece of paper surrendering all of his rights to the character. Jack didn't have a lawyer read it and he may have been concerned that Marvel wouldn't give him any work* if he didn't, so he signed the thing. (*At that time, Kirby was on the "outs" with DC because of a previous dispute with one of the editors) Further on down the line, Joe Simon wasn't pleased with the way Marvel was handling Cap so he tried to sue to regain the rights to the character. According to SImon's autobio, the copyright laws had subtly changed and that by not having Jack sign that Work-For-Hire agreement, he was essentially making Kirby a "partner" in the strict sense where Kirby had an automatic share in the creation and OWNERSHIP of whatever they produced, including Captain America! And when Kirby surrendered his rights to Marvel about Cap, he made it difficult if not impossible for Joe to regain Captain America! You'd have to read Simon's autobio to find out how the case resolved itself but according to Joe, he confronted Jack about it but Kirby reiterated his concerns about not getting any work from Marvel because he had a family to take care of. Anyone who doesn't think DC would have done the same thing to Bill Finger if they had the chance is living on Fantasy Island! This story about Simon, Kirby, Cap and Marvel makes me admire Bob Kane all the more! Comic book companies are not run by people like George Bailey from IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE; they will take any advantage a creator will give them and now that some of them are owned by corporations, the situation may have gotten even worse!

Bob is smart not to do anything with Stan. 5:24 to 5:29 his laugh shows his real feelings on anything Stan is saying.
