the idea behind DSM actually came from markets in the 60s and 70s, where all cultures came together to create some sort of experience. thats why in DSM all the brands they carry are so different from each other :)

GearedTowardGear it was, exaclty, the Kensington Market, that ran from the 70s to the early 90s. So basically a hotchpotch of a lot of different cultures! I’d highly suggest the Rei Kawakubo “TASCHEN” Book, very informative, expecially if you’re looking for infos regarding DSM :)

The irony of PLAY is that it’s the antithesis of what Rei Kawakubo stood for when creating CDG in the first place. For a label so rooted in its “anti fashion” ideas, PLAY is as consumerist and boring as it gets.

@@yungzed If playing devil's advocate, the few cases one could make is that it's necessary to fund the true Comme Des Garçons art (weak argument/Rei says her work isn't art/of course too successful at this point to warrant it now) and that it is providing sustainable and expressive clothing at an accessible price & style for the general public (unfortunately disagree here as well).

@@GearedTowardGear I was talking to one of the sales associates at DSM, so this is probably their interpretation, but they said something along the lines of it's a label with absolutely no design. Which I mean is interesting in its own right, especially when put in context with the main line labels. However, it probably is just a way to make money sadly.

Honestly, these videos you produce are changing my feelings about fashion and these designers. Politically and personally, I really hated "fashion" and fast fashion as a system in its entirety and looked at these designers as complicit. I am a printmaker and do some textile art and garment mending/redesign, and over time my view of fashion was softened, and these videos really push the artistry of these designers for me. It's like art history class for just one designer or brand at a time, and I've been pouring over their histories and documentaries since.

Thank you for sharing. Just read and it sounds lovely. The brands they stock are quite interesting; are there other labels in store? I also remember reading that the various stores were always operated by locals who may or may not have any connection to CDG. David seems quite knowledgable, but in other cases shoppers were complaining when employees couldn't offer more info about given items at the time. Positives and negatives I guess. Love the concept.

@@GearedTowardGear Last time I was in there, they had a few other labels, notably Norse Projects, Folk and Margaret Howell, after reading the article on the site, it's quite disappointing to see the lack of Antwerp 6 labels considering they were specifically mentioned. I think you guys shouldn't be that hard on play. I personally own high top PLAY converse and I like them. For me there is absolutely no way to afford anything else from cdg and even tho the design isn't that interesting I just like to wear something that represents such a great company. It feels special because I don't have other designer pieces so it connects me to that world without costing a fortune. But one thing I really disslike is the association with hypebeasts because I don't want to have anything in to do with that scene and that's sadly the first thought people have about PLAY.
