I've always wanted to make my own shirts and jeans as store bought ones are never quite perfect, but I've never got past that stage. Watching this video has taught me so much in a short space of time that I'm actually going to do it. See the plastic slotted screw turn it counterclockwise 1/2 turn. I have the same machine and I agree it sucks. Singer usually is ok.

Instead of muslin fabric, sometimes I use a thrift store flat sheet. Twin usually works fine. Depending on where you are used sheets are about half the price of muslin fabric. This is not always possible, but it is an idea.
