The western world's most potent religion, Catholicism, was determined to maintain power at any cost in medieval France, 15th-century Spain, Renaissance Italy, and even into the 19th century. Historians, experts, and Church authorities advise on the handling of this controversial subject matter.

Yes and it's very sad that we have not learned from these horrors. Look at WW2 and the Holocaust, Rwanda and Bosnia. We kill each other for our skin color or our beliefs and for what? I refuse to use race as a term to separate people for the simple fact that there is only ONE race (HUMANKIND) not multiple. But we do all these horrible things to each other and what exactly do we get from it other than more pain and misery and bloodshed? What good does war do for anyone? All I see is hundreds of thousands of people dying for no good reason. People who had SO MUCH to give the world who instead are sacrificed to a slaughter that shouldn't have had to happen in the first place.

@WJFK480
@WJFK480 Жыл бұрын
I see your point, but I don't think it's as important as some make it out to be since we already have a first amendment. To myself and others, its just another way for people who hate religion and for the government to violate our first amendment rights, we don't live in a theocracy in the U.S. Keeping the state out of the church and vice versa has it's place, but that's just common sense. The idea of separation of church and state was never anything more than an idea (not a law or a right etc.) taken out of context from some letter Jefferson wrote to some church about something anyway, it's not in the Constitution. The first Capitol Building even had a chapel in it I believe.

The right to assemble and freedom of speech or free media/press helps, too. I’m not a Constitutional attorney, but the combination of rights emboldens each of them. It’s not “this” right or “that” right, but ALL rights all the time. Thank God we (at least think we) are free, though theorists will differ. “Endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights…” could be interpreted that we “owe” the Creator… in The End Times, everything will be re-interpreted, I guarantee it! Beheadings, again: yeah, maybe not in the USA first, but in another nation that becomes prolific, and so it snowballs. How was A.H. in Germany ever able to seize control of the nation? It can happen again, so don’t become infatuated by any leader(s) however impressive they seem. Magic tricks look real, but they prey on weaknesses in our “human-ness.”

Thank you “absolute history” channel. I finally understand. This documentary will remain at the top of my list, and I am a documentary enthusiast. We must understand that this inquisition is not over. Of course it has changed, but it is not over. I was born in Montreal, Quebec Canada. I am a French Canadian who moved to the US at 25 years old. At the time of my birth in a hospital in Montreal my parents were forced to have me baptized in the hospital chapel prior to taking me home in order to receive a “baptismal certificate” as proof of my birth. The Catholic Church ruled over government. Most of my life, the schools are run by the church, the teachers were nuns & priests, this was public school. We had mass every single morning, we had to do confession to a priest, once a week during school. We were not allowed to have Bibles. That was a sin. I could go on and on. I received my first “government issued“ from the province of Quebec my first official birth certificate at the age of 40, once I had moved to the states. I have both documents, the proof of my birth, for 40 years, my baptismal certificate, and my birth certificate issued by the province. If you’re interested to find out how this affected everyone deeply. The fear we lift with of the nuns and priests and churches, but most importantly, the only important matter is that they made us fear God. There is a healthy, biblical fear of God, of course. That is not what I am talking about. Long story short, I never set foot in a Catholic Church ever cents. I graduated high school. During high school I didn’t need to go to church church was school. Fast forward many years, and I need to lift up my grandfather, who was an American, married my grandmother when she was a widow at 30 years old, and she moved to the US. My grandfather is the one who purchased my first Bible for me. I had the fear of God in me, I was indoctrinated opening and touching and looking at a Bible was a sin. It took many years. I must say, though, that I always believed in God, I always believed in Jesus Christ. Supernatural mystery of God. It Hass to be. Anyhow, I am a Christian now, and I do not fear the church anymore. But oh what I would give to get back the wasted years of living in the world, having only a very very private relationship with God. No one knew but me. And now I am blessed with a son-in-law, under 30 years old who is a pastor. He and two other young men started a Church which I attend and I now have a Family that is huge. So many people at home in Quebec have never forgotten what happened in school and they never trusted any churches whatsoever… that is a crime. As for me, I am free to love my God, and I am truly blessed for my only child, to have also believed in God. I am doubly blessed that she met a young man in high school, who became a pastor, and they have blessed me with four wonderful grandbabies under the age of six as I write this. I can’t myself one of the extremely lucky and blessed ones. I still have my private and personal relationship with God but more importantly, I do not need to keep it private any longer, that is not the way God wants us to live. And that is truly biblical.

Wow.. I had no idea that was going on in Quebec. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Doesn’t Canada pride itself on freedom of religion like the USA? Because that doesn’t sound like freedom of religious expression whatsoever. I would have never in a million years thought that would be going on in Quebec. I was aware that the Catholic Church was extremely prevalent in Quebec but not to that extent. Thank you for sharing your story:) I wish you the very best.🙏

I was born into the religion and grew up on military bases in the 60’s and 70’s. We were lucky because these military priests always had great catechism classes and we learned of a loving God. As I got older and became aware of the history of Christianity it shocked me all of the cruelty and pain so called religious leaders inflicted and taught their flocks was what God wanted. God is not the problem it’s the people that want to twist His teaching. I honor God and Jesus every day but no longer need an organized religion.

Now that's interesting. Your immediate reaction without knowing of it is obvious. What is without doubt for anyone into History who has half a brain, is that Inquisition mentality has cost the World untold progress over centuries and untold wisdom has been erased forever out of it's blight. It must be a very challenging watch all in one hit. The genocides, in the name evil purveyed as good, of the peoples of the 'Americas' after 1492 and the destruction of their wisdom has to be at least level with the greatest ever crimes against humanity. The Catholic faith is ONLY dominant in Central and South America off the back of it's untold and deliberately inflicted human misery. If there is a God, it isn't a Catholic God, unless God is pure evil, that's obvious.

I have studied extensively different religions throughout history, since I do love history especially ancient history which is my favorite one, as well as the behavior of human beings, and it amazes me as to how “weak” the human mind can be to fall so easily into the trap of others just to control them. IF an individual has a very strong mindset as to not let himself or herself be influenced by others having strong convictions of their own, this world would be a very nice place to live; BUT still, we are not yet up to that level. Remember: The mind is a terrible thing to waste. It is sad and a true tragedy.

Many will say to me in that day Lord,Lord have we not prophesied in thy name?and in thy name cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23. And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you : depart from me, you that work iniquity (evil). Satan also has his minister's that appear as ministers of righteousness. Jesus was killed for heresy. The heretic they tied to the wood of the stake signifies jesus tied to the wood of the cross. The extreme pain the heretic suffered signifies the extreme pain Jesus suffered. The mortification of the flesh of jesus signifies the morification of the flesh of the heretic. The Pharisees signify the priests. The kings and rulers who oversee the execution signify pontius pilate and the local leaders. The trial and procession the heretic went through signify the trial and procession Jesus went through. Jesus said: "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." The religion of Christianity is devoted to being a heretic and then being brutally killed for it, thus imitating or mimicking Jesus. That is why it is obsessed with the concept of heresy and is devoted to bashing each other as heretics. All this is hidden in cryptic demonic ways

33 years ago I was in southern Europe with a group of friends, staying, at one point, at a place reserved for the education of would be Priests. At the time extensive renovations were being undertaken throughout most of the college, and we had a young Priest give us a tour of the buildings. During the tour we entered a library that had been un-earthed by the civil engineers. And this young priest, taking two or three volumes from the shelves, laid the books open on a table. The books were in print, but many of the paragraphs and sentences had been `scribbled out` by the work of a human hand and pen and ink. In their place and in the margins were written the opinions of the Holy Inquizitors of the OP. True story. It was amazing to see, making history come very much alive. Ps, addendum : I wrote what is written above before I`d listend to the whole doc. I can only presume that the books I saw ( we saw ) were written and copied before the Index / Imprimatur / Nihil Obstat.

One of the original 10 commandments given to Moses by God directly was thou shalt not kill and Jesus also mentions it as well but takes it in my opinion anyway a step further when he says the two greatest rules are 1. Love the Lord thy God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind AND 2. Love thy neighbor as thyself. 13:35 Little do you know the manual suggests in the Inquisition not to kill people or avoid to do so. Because if they simply killed people left and right, you're just sending them to hell, so the best thing to do is to convert them and to save their souls and have a constructive life. Where do I get this from from the very Inquisition manuals it self! It's funny how this documentary left that part out! The death penalty was the very last resort. The Inquisition, for the most part, didn't really kill that many people relatively speaking, especially when talking about other points of history. More people died in one month under the formation of democracy under the French Revolution than the entire Inquisition, yet we like democracy today. If anybody actually knew what most of the Cathars stand for and who most were, most of you beep pretty disgusted on who they were. You'll find out in original historical records that most people in the population supported the Inquisition they were not afraid of it. Matter fact, they are so not afraid of it. criminals would rather get judged by the inquisition errors than they did with the secular courts because they are way less likely to get sentenced to death by the religious court than you would with the secular Court. This documentary is full of crap.

The melding of secular authority and conservative religiosity is extremely powerful. Ask the people of Saudi Arabia, or Iran, or Turkey. Then you might understand the threat to the United States posed by religious zealots in today's Republican Party. The United States Constitution tried to erect a wall between church and state. The Founding Fathers knew very well the threat posed by religious zealotry. Religious zealots, including present members of the Supreme Court are intent on tearing down the wall that has protected us from unbridled ecclesiastical power, all the time swearing fidelity to the Constitution. The Dominican monastic order became dreaded inquisitors. Part of their ‘mission’ was to root out what they perceived as heresy. They were a mendicant order that preached everywhere the Roman Catholic dogma. Their dedication to the eradication of heresy made them a logical choice for the Roman Catholic Church when it instituted the Inquisition. Because they were extremely mobile, the Dominicans could travel everywhere. The institution of the Spanish Inquisition was ostensibly established to combat heresy. The Spanish kingdom was unified with the marriage of Ferdinand II and Isabella I, and the Inquisition served to consolidate power in the monarchy. The desire for religious unity in the Iberian Peninsula increased toward the end of the Reconquista, a series of campaigns by Christian states to recapture territory from the Moors. Anti-Semitism had grown toward Spain’s Jewish community during the reign of Henry III of Castile and Leon, and pogroms had forced many to convert to Christianity. Marranos, those who had converted from Judaism to Christianity but continued to practise their faith in secret, were increasingly considered a threat to Spanish society. Spaniards were concerned with the idea of Limpieza de Sangre (Spanish for “purity of blood),” which the presence of even baptized Jews threatened. The religious fervour of the Catholic Monarchs also led to the persecution of Muslims and Protestants. As to your query as to religious reasons or backing for the inquisition, this doesn’t really factor. Essentially the Catholic Monarchs created the Inquisition to prosecute heretics and sodomites "because the Bible says so". However, the Bible also condemns and considers heresy the sins of greed, hypocrisy, and adultery, but the Inquisition was not in charge of prosecuting any of those things. It also did not prosecute those who did not go to Mass on Sunday or otherwise broke the Catholic rituals as far as it was out of simple laziness. Like most persecutions or programs made on religious grounds, consistent biblical justification is hard to find, usually, the political motivations are at the forefront. Man needs no justification to commit evil. In today's world the inquisition still is happening in the form of religious ferver and political gain. It is now not only Catholics but also from the baptist and evangelist. Wars to control Muslim lands for oil to control over politics that control minorities and sexual identity. The burning at the stake takes on a different form of ridding others of heresy now its oppression.

@@proverbs3_5-8 I appreciate that, thank you, likewise. So throughout the New Testament, the most essential things are these: Deity of Christ. His death. His resurrection. Belief in him and to serve him. All of which the Catholic church holds to. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul defines the gospel. That Christ died for ours sins, rose from the dead, appeared to many people after his death. Which the Catholic church holds to. So where exactly would they not hold to the fundamentals of the Christian faith? If you're looking at Catholic tradition that isn't written in the Bible, well that would be early Christian tradition. Which is why many non-Catholic Christians do not agree with the statement that Catholicism is not Christianity.

I was married in 1978 to a Catholic man. We were both 20 years old at the time. I myself was raised Lutheran. It’s so sad to say, my mother-in-law hated me and treated me as if I didn’t exist. At the time I didn’t understand and finally asked my sister-in-law as to why. She replied, because you are not Catholic. I eventually learned to live with her attitude towards me, but when our daughter was born, she treated her, as if she wasn’t even there also. How sad for her.

why did the inquisition prohibit the translation into a spoken language in 1555??? this issue was settled back in 9 century. The mission of Constantine and Methodius had great success among Slavs in part because they used the people's native language rather than Latin or Greek. In Great Moravia, Constantine and Methodius also encountered missionaries from East Francia, representing the western or Latin branch of the Church, and more particularly representing the Carolingian Empire as founded by Charlemagne, and committed to linguistic, and cultural uniformity. They insisted on the use of the Latin liturgy, and they regarded Moravia and the Slavic peoples as part of their rightful mission field.

Basically the vulgata i.e. the translation from Greek into Latin was also a Translation into the then spoken language. But in the middle ages and early modernity the church was afraid and didnt trust everyone to read and interpret the bible for themselves and of course Holding on to Power centralised by their interpretation of God's words was also inportant, so basically the motives wäre a wish to preserve unity, power and paternalism

Because keeping The Bible in Latin forced people to rely on the church and it's priests. More importantly, it kept them from knowing God's Word so that they wouldn't see how false and idolatrous The Roman Catholic Church was/is.

The stock answer from the church was that important meanings could be lost or misunderstood in the transcription, leading to heretical misunderstandings. The simple fact is that if the teachings are not in the common language, the people must rely on the papacy and priests to tell them what it means. Which gives greater control to the church.

The Catholic church has not changed from believing that their religion is the only and true one. I grew up with a Catholic believing mom. She always said that leaving the Catholic religion is an eternal sin, and your soul will be condemned forever. I am a christian now and read the Bible (which she doesn't believe in anyway because she says that it was written by men). I pray for her. She is so misguided. My heart hurts for her 💔

The Catholic Church does not say scripture was written by men. The Church has always taught that God through a special act of inspiration wrote through the men the inerrant scripture. Secondly, the liturgy of the Catholic Church *At least the old rite that is* takes just about everything, and I mean everything, from sacred scripture. From the priest walking to the altar, to every little detail ripe with symbolism, and most importantly the sacrificial nature of the cross foreshadowed in the OT temples. I would suggest you actually read a catechism instead of taking the word of your likely unchatechized mother or protestant pastors that never even walked in a Catholic church for what is actually believed.

There's absolutely NO justification for the cruelty of the Catholic church. The example for all true believers of the Christian faith is Jesus Christ. Anyone who reads His story will immediately realize that Jesus spread the message/gospel with compassion, forgiveness and love. He came to seek and to save NOT to seek and destroy. When you read the Bible, you find that the punishment for those who choose to reject Christ is the damning of their own souls to eternal separation from Him. It's not an earthly punishment put upon one person by another. It's an eternal spiritual consequence that one puts upon oneself by CHOOSING to reject the salvation of Christ. In other words, there's NO relation whatsoever between the behavior of the Catholic church and the example given by Jesus Christ and documented in the Bible.

Unfortunately for some, this information is willfully hidden or just not taught....I was raised in a "Christian" family (church on Sunday, prayer before eating, devotion every morning etc) but the ONE time I found a book on the Inquisition and asked my priest about it....wow. Splashed me with holy water and suggested I "pray for my soul to not go to hell".....I was FOURTEEN. A CHILD. And was told I'd burn if I questioned my faith again. Made to feel guilty over asking about the Inquisitions motives and morality.

I'm just at the start of the video, but am already wondering if they will mention that "The Church" has never rescinded the edicts that made the Inquisition possible and "legal". It petered out, but the Inquisition was never officially abolished. Do I believe they'd burn anyone at the stake today? No. But as a non-religious, "only-spiritual" person, this only underscores my sense that rejecting organized religion in favor of the golden rule and common sense is absolutely the right call.
