The scene I remember most from Bambi isn't the death scene of his mother (though that is memorable). What I remember most clearly is the scene of some bird getting shot. That moment gave me chills when I was younger. This poor bird is just sitting in the grass with her friends, she's just waiting for something bad to happen. The tension of the situation causes her to panic until her nerves get the best of her and she tries to fly away. Then she gets shot and her body hits the ground. That scene was more impactful than the mom's death. At least for me.

I know this comment was written awhile ago but I agree. I barely remembered Bambi’s mom getting shot. What I remembered the most was the entire meadow scene. The beauty and whimsy of the meadow followed by the awe and coolness of the bucks and the prince of the forest followed by the extreme tension of everyone running with Bambi calling out to his mother and her calling for him in a panic and running as fast as they can scared to avoid the hunters that were coming. I know everyone remembers the sadness of Bambi’s mom but I always remembered the tense panic type scenes

Noah Aaron I’m inclined to disagree with that philosophy. I tend to believe that a talented writer can utilize their setting as a sort of character within it’s own right. Just hear me out: 1. “Atmosphere” is akin to a setting’s ‘personality.’ It can influence the mood of the work itself. 2. Settings-like characters-are flat or dynamic. The setting characters are placed in impacts change upon said characters. Likewise: An active character will impact change upon the setting. 3. Settings can add thematic parallels. Much like cast members may have subplots with relevant themes. 4. Opportunities for symbolism abound! 5. And this one is where I reconnect with your and Lily’s take on this, (Part A): The focus of your narrative matters. You don’t want the setting to distract from the story-much the same way that you don’t want a side character or subplot swallowing up the rest of the narrative. Moreover, (Part B): People don’t want to read a Wikipedia info-dump about a character, any more than they want to read a Wikipedia info-dump about a setting. *Too much unrelated world-building is like derailing a story so you can talk about your cool new OC.* And, (Part C): Just like when exploring a cast of characters, the best way to explore a setting puts a heavy emphasis on ‘Show Don’t Tell.’ (Again, no one wants an info-dump). In the case of both setting and characters, you want the reader to learn about them gradually, through the protagonist’s interactions with these entities. That’s my take on it at least. 🤷‍♀️

It's the best thing in the world and I have no idea how anyone could settle for less. For some reason, people are happy in those relationships. I may not agree with it, but as long as they don't push those standards onto other people, I still respect them. Though, unfortunately, most of those people DO push it onto people. So it generally turns into a conflict anyway.

Also, I completely agree with your critique on frozen 2, don’t explain the magic. I didn’t need to know why Elsa has her powers, I don’t care. Everybody is so nitpicky these days because they want to feel smart, so they try to out-logic a fairy tale. Disney feels the horrible urge to address all these nitpicks and that’s how you get atrocities like the beauty and the beast remake. I feel like overly trying to explain the magic where it’s not needed kills the sense of wonder and suspense of disbelief. Everything has to be so unproblematic that there aren’t even real villains, and therefore real tension anymore... everything is so safe but it’s making billions and it’s frustrating to see bc as long as they’re making money this way, they’re not gonna change up their bland McDonald’s style formula.

I'm not sure if it says more about me or Disney's reputation with sequels that the minute I heard Frozen 2 was announcement my first reaction was "oh no" since most Disney sequels are known to be... not great (though I've only ever heard good things about A Twist in Time and I do like most of The Lion King 2 even if it's not a great film). I'll probably never end up watching it, particularly since, while I like world building, it's not a necessity and I certainly don't need an explanation as to why Elsa has ice powers. I know 'magic' is a hand wave not a lot of people like but, honestly, that's all that's needed sometimes. I 100% would have watched it if she got herself a girlfriend though. Overall, these In A Minutes have given me a new appreciation for a lot of these movies, particularly Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. I never really picked up on Triton's behaviour as abusive and I was too caught up in the love story to remember that Ariel was interested in the surface long before she met Eric so it was good to hear a perspective on the film beyond 'she gave up her fins for a hot guy'. Hearing a different perspective on a lot of these films in general was nice, especially on movies I liked that you didn't.

Don't bother watching Frozen 2. I had to watch it twice already. And I can tell you this. Into the Unknown is actually a decent song, even without the visuals. But Lost in the Woods, with the visuals, is like an 80's rock ballad and it. Is. Everything. They went entirely ham and cheese on it, had a great time, and it shows. I fucking love it.

Most of the Disney sequels were Direct-to-DVD and they all came with a sizable drop in animation quality and most of them had noticeably weaker stories than the original (exceptions being Cinderella III and Pocahontas II). Most of these movies were designed solely for children and their plots usually contained mundane day-to-day affairs. There's like 2 dozen of them, and I'd argue only 6 or 7 are even watchable. There are 3 Disney sequels that weren't Direct-to-DVD: Rescuers Down Under, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Frozen II. Most people prefer the 2nd Rescuers to the 1st because the villain is more intimidating, but both movies are overall meh. I don't understand why this movie even got a sequel. The original wasn't particularly entertaining or fondly remembered. And you had a really enjoyable Sherlock Holmes character right there just waiting to be used. Ralph Breaks the Internet is Disney's version of the Emoji Movie except somehow more annoying. It completely ruins the characters, world, and themes of the original. Avoid it like the plague. Watch the Disney princess stuff it contains but otherwise it's easily the worst thing they've released since the Dark Age (besides maybe Chicken Little). Frozen 2 meanwhile is troubled but has some merit. Everyone else has gone into details about it.

Sooooo, I'm from the bible belt and I'm pan. As an adult woman who's family are constantly trying to rewrite my narrative to make themselves feel comfortable, I've always had this sense of imposter syndrome in the LGBTQA+ community. Like even though I'm pan, I get anxious that I'm not gay enough (disclaimer please don't every think this way. There's no such thing as being gay enough or too gay for that matter). Like I walked into the community and I haven't done enough (having crushes on women or dating them) to be included. I started hearing my family saying I was only pan to be trendy because my first female crush was in college. When Lily got to the Hunchback movie I wondered "Why did I like it growing up?" Sure, I like the song Hellfire. Villain songs have always been my jam, but what else? "Oh! I liked Esmeralda. She was this brave, sweet, witty, no shits giving woman, and the dance she did... the dance and the way she smirked...oh. Ooooooh" I suddenly realised, I had always liked woman, I just didn't feel safe to acknowledge it till college. So this was a really nice realisation. Which was compounded when I thought "Why did I like Hercules? Well Hades is fun and Megara with the smirk....huh, I have a type". EDIT: Aaaaaand Captain Amelia got added to that list of childhood crushes I didn't understand my feelings about.

I wish I could love Hercules. I desperately want to love it but I know way to much about Greek mythology to sit though it. There are myths that are family friendly that they could use or since Hercules is a cultural hero they could pick and choose the story points they want because mythology isn't internally consistent but instead they just make a whole bunch of shit up. There is SO MUCH SOURCE MATERIAL, GOD DAMN IT! It hurts my on the inside. And I wanna see Hercules's boyfriends damnit

45:00 from the moment we see jane and her father we know they are obssesed with gorrilas, both, not only her father, jane also cares about their nesting habits and way of life. Jane staying with tarzan felt to me more than "woman leaves life for man" it felt to me like jane realising she is happier in jungle, with the gorrilas, away from people like the poachers ("civlized people") and yes, tarzan, the man who showed her the jungle and taught her as much as she taught him

Just an idea, but Pocahontas would probably not have been that terribly disturbing if there was no white settlers XD I mean, do the same Romeo and Juliet story to stop a war, but between two Natives peoples, like the Powhatans and the Patawomeck briefly evoquated at the start of the movie ^^'

ABSOLUTELY YES TO MULAN!! Mulan is my absolute fave Disney movie. It's funny, emotional, and like you said, VILLAINS ARE VILLAINS!!! I hate it when movies/shows/books/entertainment have this irredemable villain only to turn around and go 'HAHA U THOUGHT' and suddenly I want to punch the character everyone worships.

Your reviews of The Little Mermaid, Mulan and Hercules convinced me to watch all of those movies and I had no regrets. Mulan is the best film of these 3 because it feels the best paced and Mulan is the best main character out of Ariel and Hercules to me. It was close though. Hercules is the most fun and I find Hades to be one of the best Disney Villains ever made. The Little Mermaid is the weakest of these to me but I still love Ariel and I like the more cunning nature of Ursula. 2 9/10s and an 8.5/10

I like to think that tianna in the princess and the frog isn't the one learning a lesson, it's the male lead, he is learning what love really is rather than his misconceptions of it, if the movie had Tianna still be her bad ass self that gets her restaurant and him who learns what love really is, it would have been a better movie. Tianna already knows what love is and how to have a healthy relationship between those she loves and her dreams that, shes not really the one learning a lesson. the movie is just pretending it's HER that learns something when it's actually the prince.

I often try to use this movie to interpret my very confused feelings about my own mom. Whenever I tried to not dislike my own mom, I would also find myself justifying Gothel around the same time. I viewed their deterioration of their relationship to be one of misunderstandings, and hearing things at the wrong tim,e or things coming out wrong or being clumsy socially rather than powerplays. For the first 8 years after I watched the film (I first saw it when I was 10), I only saw their relationship first start deteriorating when Gothel is holding up the green gaslight. I remember being jealous in the "Mother Knows Best" song with how good their relationship was, because the mom TALKED to Rapunzel, she told her what the expectations were, and she told her where to touchy points were. It wasn't walking on eggshells or walking on glass or wondering what you could have possibly said at what point to suddenly get stone walled or undermined.

my only qualm with this video is where lily was talking about abuse and how the friend wanted their friend wanted to get out of an abusive relationship. Lily said that all it takes is "eyes, ears and ten cewnts worth of compassion" but they (lily) also just gave over $115, seemingly like it wasnt even a dent in their pocket. i have friends of my own in bad situations, and i was in a bad one of my own about 9 months ago, but frankly i have literally no means of forking over money to people in need, esp with corona cutting my hours by half and me going into the red twice a month in order to pay bills. I can offer a shoulder and an ear, but i can't do anything other than that. idk, i just interpreted it as "if you want to help someone you have to give them the money they need"

I remember in school the teacher told us that Christopher Columbus called the native americans 'indians' because he thought he'd landed in India where he intended to go. To which i wondered but didn't think it would be okay to voice aloud, "Why then do we still call them Indians? We named them when they didn't need naming. They already had their own tribe names." I'm glad to see at least that now people seem to be using 'native americans' instead of the word 'indians'. I assume native americans themselves might find this preferable? Idk. Maybe someone will comment and tell me.

39:35 I think that dark territory can be very compelling in children’s movie if it addresses it as it is and actually makes it into something endearing and emotional and actually an important piece of storytelling And most importantly, treating a dark subject matter not as jokes or glorification, but with respect. Not just there to say we have it in and that it’s dark. I only really like dark if it’s treated with the proper care and respect. Otherwise it’s just sort of depressing(also depression isn’t handled well in a lot of things there are some things that treat it well but none I’ve actually really seen as it’s the stereotypically bully and all and romance saves the day. THATS NOT DEPRESSION. THATS OFFENSIVE. And anyone can get depression. Ok I’ll stop ranting about content that’s not relevant)
