From Philosopher's Stone in 2001 to Hogwarts Legacy in 2023...the history of the Harry Potter games has been a fascinating journey.
For more than two decades, the Harry Potter franchise has been a mainstay of popular culture spanning across books, movies, toys, a stage play, a theme park, and video games. There have been more than 30 HP video game titles across PC, handhelds, home consoles, and mobile devices.
There have been major partnerships with key companies like LEGO, experimental titles using the Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move, and of course, there are the mainline titles that coincided with each movie release.
People of the Internet, RetroRaconteur here. I’m just a dad who loves games and the stories they tell. And this is the complete history of the Harry Potter video games.

Dude, Harry Potter 1-3 games were so well crafted for their time. Especially compared to everything afterwards in the main series, you can see how the simplified style of the early games really helped sell the immersive experience. When they started to try and make the characters look like their actors, the games started to look and feel so incredible clunky lol.

SAME! I keep thinking about a Career mode where you start out in trials for you House, try and win the house cup, get drafted into a team after school and then try and play for your country and win the world cup. Also online where you play one position on the team. Ultimate Team, Manager Mode. The world is so wide and rich that it would be so easy to make, surely!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on PC is the most underrated game in the series, the free-roam exploration and secrets are the best in the series (at least in terms of the PC versions) and the spells learned make the gameplay the most fun. That's kinda my 'happy place' HP game. Loved the spells and loved dueling. Azkaban for PC had so much potential with Buckbeak flying and transfiguration but did little with any of it, Chamber of Secrets was very balanced with how much it offered and fleshed Hogwarts out. Recently got emulated PS version - it's so different from the get-go, feels like a completely new game

Oh man, Quidditch World Cup brings back so many memories! I first played it when my cousin brought it over to my grandmother's house while his side of the family stayed there for Christmas. He absolutely flattened me cause I'd never played before. But I eventually got it for myself and played it obsessively cause I was determined to beat him next time. Every day after school, Quidditch. I played everything. All the teams, all the brooms, all the fields. I was ready. The next time I saw my cousin, I asked him to play........ And by that point he refused to, because it had been over a year and he'd gotten bored with it. You can imagine my frustration. But QWC sticks out in my memory as the first game I ever completed 100%. Good times.

It’s also important to note that back then, critics were actually gaming critics so even though they were pretty generous for my liking, the standards where much higher today. A 6-7 were still above average and worthwhile. Today a 7/10 is like a 3-4/10 back then.

true, now most of the 'critics' are paid by the publisher to rate games highly, or are completely inept and should never be in a position of judging video games.

the Order of the Phoenix on PS2 is still one of the best games I have ever played. roaming freely around the castle, exploring every bit. learning all the portraits passwords, getting an o on all subjects, getting everyone from the DA, finding all talking gargoyles, playing wizards chess, Godstones etc etc, just made for such a cool game. it followed the entire storyline of the film and even added some parts and details from the book. you could choose to play the storyline or shortly pause to explore more parts of the castle/do sidequests or battle someone on the courtyard or play a game of wizard chess/gobstones/exploding snap. Sadly the Half-blood prince could not replicate the experience.

I played most of these growing up! Honestly, HBP had a lot of potential since it had free roam and you could cast spells and make potions -- it was really cool on the Wii. But like you mentioned, you could easily do a speed run in just a few hours. I wish it had more collecting like with the jelly beans in the older games, more characters to play as and perhaps more side quests among other things.

Played the heck out of HP2 on the GBA. It just felt great, so much stuff to do besides finishing the story. You could max out levels, collect all the cards, find funny dialogue or a few little sidequests... Even finding bugs was fun. I have very fond memories of discovering you could get a sidequest Ginny npc onto the 3rd floor hallway after she's been taken into the chamber of secrets in the main story. Just the fact the developers made it so that after you finish the story, you get to start again with your level, monster info and famous witch/wizard cards made it so much better. Also, it had minigames to play with my siblings, getting hiscores against eachother. Got the Goblet of Fire for the DS later and probably finished it once and tossed it aside.

The PC version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was in fact my initial exposure to Harry Potter. I was 5 years old. I was being babysat by some relatives, and I remember watching my older cousin beat the basilisk. It wasn't for several more years that I read the books, but it's funny to reflect on

Thank you so much for all your time: this is probably the most comprehensively put together video about computer games I've ever seen. The effort you put in to writing the script and selecting scenes of gameplay to match it and so on is phenomenal. You've really gone above and beyond what I would have expected in a video on the subject. Probably tens of hours at the very least you spent on putting this together: much appreciated (I knew a film maker who would typically spend 300 hours on each hour's final film output for broadcast/ distribution so I can only imagine how many hundreds of hours you've spent on your channel). Thanks so much again for all your hard work! I was just dipping in to find out about a few of the later games I never got round to buying and was it worth getting Howarts Legacy and so on but I've come away having learnt so much more than I was expecting. Brilliant stuff! Liked and sub'ed :)

Great video. I have fondest memories of Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets on PC. I still think a full-fledged MMORPG could be profitable for the Harry Potter universe. I just worry it's not feasible to green-light a game like that considering the current production cycle of video games.

loved this so much! those movie games made up so much of my childhood, and were honestly some of my first introduction to gaming in general. my love for the series has lasted almost my entire life and the new hogwarts game is really making my love and fond memories of the games come back up, so thank you for going over all of them and even the ones i didn't pay much attention to in the years after the movies/games had concluded.

I later got the 3rd and 4th on GBA, 5th on DS, 6th on PC and both LEGO games by TT on Wii (Also got the remastered versions on PS4). I have just bought 6 on Wii and I've ordered 5, 7 part 1 and 7 part 2 on Wii and I'm also eagerly awaiting Hogwarts Legacy for PS5.

i still have chamber of secrets on my gamecube collection shelve. i actually really enjoyed that game. it was a basically a free roaming game where you went around the castle, and took on challenges to progress through the game, learning new spells to progress. these challenges where a lot like the dungeons in the legend of zelda games, with the new new spell being needed to clear the challenge etc...

U did a really good job researching and presenting all those diffrent versions of each game. For the earlier a games it feels like u have to play the pc and console version to get the full experience. Only played the pc versions though with all those puzzles and never thought about it that the ps version is diffrent.
