In 1939 Europe entered a war in which she would never recover. The cause of this war was a little city named Danzig at the mouth of the Vistula river. The city was almost totally German in population. They wanted to join Germany. The Poles considered the city vital to their interests. Britain felt that Germany's demands were completely justified and in fact even benevolent. Yet Britain still chose to go to war over this little city of 400,000 people.
Why did the Brits take this step? Why did the Poles refuse to negotiate? Why was Germany so adamant to get the crisis solved immediately? What were their terms for Poland's return? Why did Molotov and Ribbentrop sign their now-infamous pact? Find out all the answer to all these questions and more in this video.

@@bastaitNot Russia, the Soviet Union. The Allies also found it convenient to let Uncle Joe occupy countries before the German-Polish war began. They did nothing to help Finland, when the Soviet Union attacked and they knew that many millions had been murdered or starved to death by the Soviets, yet that didn't bother them, just like they didn't care, that half of Europe vanished behind the Iron curtain, even Poland, whose sovereignty was supposedly the reason the declared war on Germany.

@@bastait Why dont you watch the damn video. Hitler obviously wanted to fight the soviets initially, most of his ideology was anti communism. After the brits guaranteed Poland it was obvious that they wanted war. At that point he realized no alliance w the west was possible and looked east. From Stalins position, Germany had a lot more to offer as an ally than England but he didnt 100% trust Hitler due to paranoia and Hitlers deep anti communist belief. Thats why he moved all Russian factory production deep into inland Russia.

My biggest regret being an American who has gone through our severely propagandized education system is this. We have been placed in the position to arbitrate the world stage, and have spent the time from WW2 to teach our youth to never listen to the other side and that the time to have nuanced discussions has passed. We didn’t even learn about Danzig or anything leading up to WW2. It was WW1, Treaty of Versailles upset Germany, Hitler invaded Poland for revenge because he was a mad man. That was IT. Thank you for your channel, I only wish that this trend out of our brainwashing continues toward a more peaceful future for us all.

Gen Z.... No chance, this generation loves to "talk" about changes, as long as it is on social media. There is a little thing called the 2nd. No one uses it for what it was made to do. The only time anyone uses it is to "protect" their own piece of world. You can say about the Italians what you will, but THEY marched against their govt, and CHANGED things. (I'm not a fascist. Nor do I support fascism) That is the issue of today, people TALK, but don't WALK. The people in charge KNOW this, they are infinitely more intelligent than the people as a whole. My reason for not changing anything is simple, and honest: I'm 55, retired born and living in the Netherlands. I'm financially very secure, hence I could retire whilst still able to enjoy it. I have no children, so I also have no burden to "save" the planet for "your offspring" I payed my dues, I made the conscious decision NOT to father children that have to live in this wasteland we call "life" I made sure my "backyard" is and stayed clean. And yes, I too would love to have world peace, but that's not something I have to work for, that's for this generation to accomplish.

That wasn't all we were taught. We also were taught that Hitler was such a crazed maniac that he started a two front war because he wanted to conquer the world (and the teachers laughed at how stupid he was for doing that) - until we brave Americans (no mention of saturation bombing civilian cities) saved the world. Our education on the subject was contemptible. Really, it was all a prelude to education about the evils of "the Holocaust." My biggest regret as an American is that we participated in the war at all.

Great uncle fought on the American side in WW2. One of the men tasked with holding off the allied retreat in the battle of the bulge. Fought hard and dug into the frozen ground to create a fox hole deep enough to not be exposed to artillery. Those around him who didn't dig deep enough were getting hit with shrapnel. Eventually they retreated to a structure and kept fighting until a tank crashed through the wall and they were huddled in a basement surrounded. Marched right past the Malmedy massacre saw what happened just a day prior with the bodies around. They were told to stay there a moment thought they were going to be killed too but kept marching. His friend was wounded couldn't walk was told if the man couldn't walk or be carried her would be killed. Great uncle carried the man the entire way. Traded his watch at a village they passed for a potato to eat. Talked of the trains. So densely packed people could die hit by shrapnel from a bombing on the train and would be still dead standing there unable to fall. The camps were full they were sent through many areas of Europe. I forget which camp he ended up at. Started the war 6'2 180 when liberated by the Russians he was 128lbs. The POW camp he was at was in visual proximity to the other kind of camp. I was in highschool at the time and asked about the atrocities at the other camp. He gave me a confused look and explained at this time of the war rations were so low the German soldiers themselves were also suffering. They were barely hanging on. His friend lived too and they remained good friends through their lives after. From his perspective he wasn't aware of any better or worse condition elsewhere. Was about to be shipped off to the land invasion of Japan until the bombs fell. As terrible as that was he knows a land invasion would have been much worse loss of life for everyone involved. He did not hold a grudge against Germany despite the fighting. He later visited Germany after the war. Even the camp he was at is now a memorial which he visited. Said it's a beautiful country. He only told me about the war once ever. His mind was sharp into his 90s and his passing. He kept up with exercises he learned through military service through his life. Kept a 357 under his pillow. Talking to him was fascinating no propaganda bs he could recall how everything was from long ago. Always said find no shame in any job you do most important thing is do whatever you can to survive. Through the worst of everything he kept a photo of his little brother my grandfather and promised to himself he would make it through to see him again.

From "Freedom Betrayed" , the posthumously published book by Herbert Hoover on WW2: "Roosevelt and Bullitt were the major factors in the British making their guarantees to Poland and becoming involved in the war. Kennedy said that Bullitt, under instructions from Roosevelt, was constantly urging the Poles not to make terms with the Germans and that he Kennedy, under instructions from Roosevelt, was constantly urging the British to make guarantees to the Poles. He said that after Chamberlain had given these guarantees, Chamberlain told him (Kennedy) that he hoped the Americans and the Jews would now be satisfied but that he (Chamberlain) felt that he had signed the doom of civilization. Kennedy said that if it had not been for Roosevelt the British would not have made this most gigantic blunder in history. Kennedy told me that he thought Roosevelt was in communication with Churchill, who was the leader of the opposition to Chamberlain, before Chamberlain was thrown out of office…." Makes me sad how much context about WW2 is simply not understood and glossed over again and again by both amateur and academic historians selling oft-repeated simpleton takes and feeding off of years of official propaganda. Honestly, by the title alone I was worried this would be the usual “After years of trying to appease Hitler and his megalomaniacal desire to conquer Europe and the world, Germany started WW2 by invading Poland on Sep 1, 1939.” The moment I heard you utter “Danzig” I decided I should give your analysis a chance. Our family came from Poland and Germany, via Danzig. Both sides met in America and were free of both World Wars. As such, I've always viewed the German-Polish war of 1939 as a horrific and avoidable tragedy and I think this video really shows how it was exactly that. The Germans and Poles faced the same enemy in Communist Russia, and it was terrible that the Allies and the Polish, Post-Pilsudki "Democratic" Government continued to make Poland into a battleground of resistance after their disastrous and inevitable failed defense of the Nation. It was terrible that the Polish alienated the Ukrainians and Germans who by all rights were fellow Christians, fellow Europeans, and would eventually become fellow victims of Russian terrorism, genocide and murder. I hope that Europeans, and the World, will never make the same mistake again. Fantastic video as always!

Post-WWII Poland was actually more homogenous that in any point in it's history. Communist-ruled Poland allowed 1 million ashkenazi jews to migrate to Israel and the German minority was non-existent by the 1950s. Communist or socialist Poland had relatively high birth rates compared to the rest of Europe from the 1950s until the 1990s. By 1970s and 1980s it was both germanless and jewless. I was always envious of Canadian WW2 vets for “getting to fight a righteous war” while I served in Afghanistan. I couldn’t have been more wrong. We both had no business being there. Makes me sick to think that it’s taken me this long to see it for what it was.

Took me awhile too, some STILL don't want to hear it. I def some notice younger adults don't buy that crap about the "good war" that was spewed for three generations. A very interesting and well made documentary, as always. One thing, that the one just cant comprehend is why England was so furious about Germany wanting to incorporate small pieces of german land into their state, while they themselves literally controlled most of south Asia and 1/3 of Africa with a population of hundred milions of non-british people. No one can explain this. But the main point to learn from this video is that Hitler was not the warmonger only wanting to secure Lebensraum, nor was Chamberlain a fool that was only being tricked by HItler.

Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel." Deuteronomy 32:48-52 That is not exceptionalism favoring the children of Israel? "Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations:" Isaiah 49:1 Your Isaiah 49:6 continues: "This is what the Lord says- the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel- to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: “Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”" Isaiah 49:7 "This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I will beckon to the nations, I will lift up my banner to the peoples; they will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their hips. Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground; they will lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.” Can plunder be taken from warriors, or captives be rescued from the fierce[c]? But this is what the Lord says: “Yes, captives will be taken from warriors, and plunder retrieved from the fierce; I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save. I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh; they will be drunk on their own blood, as with wine. Then all mankind will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior, your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.” Isaiah 49:22-26 The Lord promising the people of Israel all the riches of the other nations and servitude of even their kings and queens.
