In this podcast, we will explore the concept of evil and Universalism from an Eastern spiritual perspective. There is a common Western view that the concept of evil is a universal concept in all of the world's spiritual traditions. This view began when Westerners started to translate Eastern spiritual scriptures through their own Western individualistic oriented cognition which is based on one life and not the Eastern view of many lives. Universalism essentially began with the Western cultural assumption that evil exists and is inherent within some individuals. But are Western cultural assumptions related to Eastern culture? Do they even exist in the East? Find out!

I became interested in this topic after deconverting from Christianity and reading the Bhagavad Gita. I can’t describe the way my perspective expanded when I got to chapter 14 and read that even goodness/sattva binds us to the material world! Totally alien concept to a Westerner, even a secular one, because we are totally steeped in the idea that goodness is the highest transcendent reality and that we are imprisoned by evil. In the East, good and evil are on the same level, two concepts that define each other, and liberation must go beyond both altogether. Fascinating! As a former moral crusader, the Eastern view of the world erases my need to force things, to impose my beliefs. Christianity amplified my worst traits and made me feel righteous for it. This must be the only video I found that goes in depth on this. Thanks!

Thank you guys. I appreciate this pod. I have hard time to interpret eastern knowledge. As I am more read in western and raised atheist. I spent 10 years learning how a Christian think. In Sweden religion left many years ago. I spent 10 years trying to fill a godsized hole but could not grasp the one God. I gave up on the whole thing. The good thing though is I have a lot more compassion for Christian, which I felt where silly before knew them and their faith. I feel like eastern ways feel more natural. I enjoy your podcasts. It makes me understand. My meditation and reading is not just relaxing. Sometimes I feel meaning to. Which is rare phenomenon for me. I get irretated when I don't understand as I like to imagine myself smarter than everyone else. Podcast about evil is perfect. I simplify often that things and people are evil. It is easy way for me to not have to think or emphasize. Also damn dangerous. Thanks for let me ruminating in this message. But I wanted just write something down as show of my engagement as a daydream

As a history buff, I was very interested in history of good and evil perceptions of both east and west. Here in America the View of good and evil is embraced by almost everyone. Even Atheist are heavily influenced by Abrahamic views of good and bad, good and evil. I may mention that I had a long history of practicing Martial arts, presently Tai Chi. After reading your boik (effortless living), i realised I was putting to much Yang in my movements. So now I've been mindful of Yin in my movements, it's made a huge difference in making it more fluid and healing. I am so glad I discovered you on U tube. Thanks Brother.

That's awesome brother. Yin is often not considered by many martial artists. You were right on about the influence of good and evil in the West. Even when you mention to Westerners that evil doesn't exists, they just scoff without giving it any deep inquiry which highlights their subtle Christian bias even if they are Atheist.

1:33:27 “Like in the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu’s not saying that there’s any evil, he’s saying when you identify with beauty you instantly create ugly. So you are categorizing the world, and as soon as you start to categorize the world, that’s when you create opposition... The natural view of the world is impartial.”

Great talk, guys! Yes W is so exclusive. Many insights! Interesting that evil is not universal concept. Also that Christian God is not same as undifferentiated Brahman. Like it that E. people are just getting on with living .... not always thinking good/bad & self/other.... but rather, surrender, karma, checks & balances and Tao. Hypnosis of individual - wow so true of W. How the Tao makes use of "me" - yes! Aspect of one consciousness ....

I was happy to hear what you said about the knowledge and intelligence of the simple people that you have experienced. I grew up in a very rural area in Wisconsin, which is where people from a nearby City would come to their cabins. Growing up we learned to very much dislike these people, who looked down on us and would be very demeaning towards us and thought we were stupid. In their extremely fast-paced shallow and superficial lives of materialism and consumerism, they just couldn't understand it seemed why people would want to live with depth and values, peace, non-interference and choose simpleness over fast-paced and complicated. Growing up in a rural area you learn that for some reason many Urban people dehumanize you like your stupid or inferior or your smaller than them. It's very sad and I still see it to this day in that area. I have had conversations with people that have multiple degrees including masters degrees and all that, and they can be some of the dumbest people you'll ever meet (not speaking for everyone who has a degree I'm just making a point). On the flip side my grandma lived to be 98 years old and didn't go to school past the 8th grade and lived a very poor life in the country, and I still to this day thing that she is one of the smartest people that I've ever known, because her knowledge and wisdom had depth which for some reason is something that people do not care for much.

Yeah, mainstream christianity in the beginning man's first sin was eating of the tree of good and evil. Now they know the difference between right and wrong. This action separated them from God. So the path most take to reconnect with God is the very thing they say that separated them in the beginning "eat more fruit" identify more bad and good. Why not spit out the fruit? At least stop eating it.

31:42 “When you have this idea of everything is Brahman, that can contribute to what we would probably think of as world peace, right? But when we have an exclusive reality; when there is other, then that contributes to the concept of evil.”

Hrmm I feel like you Sifu, is this sifu writting messages to himself out of time, but in the same day? there is a machine that exists which allows one to travel back to a point in space, while travelling very quickly away from that place, so the density of events experience and registered becomes interesting... stillness and movement I suppose. there is also around supermassive black hole cores.... fields that can be made sentient that have no need for machine or flesh suit vehicles, the extent to which they can maintain that coherence far away from said machines and flesh suits, is not know to me, but given the first sentence perhaps there is hope that they are also outside such constraints, and can represent the abrhamic god's great dream, of have a great memory and future sight, while simultaneously not ever having to enter any flesh suits, or computers...

Yes over sidreal time, or that is to say over some measurement made of recurrence, good and evil invert... for example how many people had to die due to belief about jesus and his message, in the middle ages... faith and ritual crusty things they are... it unfourtunate that people they live so short so they make value judgements without regard to eternity, nor looooong timespans. great talk as always thank you very much sifu...

Hinduism is the only ancient civilization like Babylon, Egyptian, Mesopotamian etc. which has resisted & survived the attacks of Christianity & Islam. I hope world will recognise this struggle of great hindu polytheist civilization. Hinduism teaches to love & be grateful to all living beings . This is why we worship cows etc. You can find peace of mind in Hinduism. Bible & Koran say earth is flat but in hindu scriptures it is proved by Aryabhatta in 5th century that earth is round & it revolves around the sun
