Ah, #condoms, the old faithful #birthcontrol method.
In case you weren’t paying attention in Sex Ed 🍌, a condom is a thin sheath made of latex, polyurethane, animal membrane, silicone, or other material that is placed over the erect penis right before intercourse.
✨ Effectiveness
When used correctly, condoms are 98% effective.
That figure drops significantly, to 82%, if the condom is used incorrectly.
This includes:
👉🏽 Putting it on or removing it incorrectly
👉🏽 Or using oil-based lubricants such as #coconutoil and petroleum jelly, which cause condoms to break.
Don’t believe me? Take a condom out of the wrapper and rub some coconut oil on it for a few minutes. It will disintegrate right before your eyes, as you can see here! 😮
When choosing condoms, look for brands that don’t contain #spermicide.
As you know from some of the previous posts, you prob don’t want harsh chemicals up in your business.
This goes for nonoxynol-9 and other spermicides that can cause an array of symptoms such as vaginal irritation and disruption of the vaginal microbiome (which can lead to vaginal infections).
Ensure that your partner is wearing the appropriate-size condom.
This will provide even more insurance during #sex and no worries of it sliding off or breaking. (Check out luckybloke.com for an easy guide to getting the right condom fit.)
🌸 Condoms can be helpful to have around if you’re using the Fertility Awareness Method (which we’ll get into soon). They provide a barrier method if you don’t want to abstain from sex during your fertile window.
“What about the female condom?”
Instead of going on the penis, internal condoms go inside your vagina for pregnancy and STD prevention. For a long time they were called “female condoms.” However, people of any gender can use them for vaginal or anal sex.
These condoms are little nitrile (soft plastic) pouches that when inserted covers the inside of your vagina, creating a barrier that stops sperm from reaching an egg.
These babies are 95% effective with perfect use, but just 79% effective with typical use.
Are you a condom user?
