BOTH sides, UNION and Confederacy HELD SLAVES DURING THE WAR, at the end of the war ONLY NORTHERN STATES HELD SLAVES, the south did not, and troops had to be dispatched to kentucky ( a union state throughout the war) to enforce the 13th. amendment in 1865 onwards. the war wasn't over slavery at all, your average confederate soldier barely owned underwear let alone a slave, whilst both grant and sherman had been slaveholders. lincoln's letter to horace greeley (easily found on the internet) the editor of the new york tribune in august of 1862 (17 months on from sumter) has lincoln stating the war is over UNION, he has NO INTEREST in slavery. and as the war draws to a close he is looking at DEPORTING them all into the caribbean. the union couldn't have raised a division in 61 to fight and free slaves, let alone an army, the war was over imprisoning the wealthy south within the union so lincoln could fund northern industrial expansion, NOTHING ELSE, the south fought to repel the invader, as the ukraine does today, in BOTH wars the republicans failed freedom.

I'm talking specifically about the Confederacy as a government and pseudo-nation, which was built on, around, and for the continuation of slavery. To give an example, the United States is well-known internationally for chasing after oil, but I've never owned more oil than is in my vehicles. I've never even seen any that isn't in a bottle ready for me to use in said vehicles. Just because individual Confederates didn't own slaves does NOT mean that's not what the Confederacy stood for. And, as the video points out, it is true that there were other reasons for the Confederacy. But, as I said, one of those reasons was slavery, so while some of those reasons may actually have been good reasons, the absolute EVIL of having slavery as a pillar of a nation makes me not care about what those reasons may have been, because either way I'm not going to side with them.

@@allofus1002 a very FEW WEALTHY men presently hold the reins of power in the USA (other countries are likely the same). the confederacy and UNION of that time were no different. a few extremists in the south had a very vested interest in slavery (my guess is few of them took up arms), 99% of confederate soldiers had no slaves, but fought to repel the invader from their homelands. 99% of union soldiers didn't give a hoot over slavery, but fought to retain the UNION as instructed by lincoln and his government. the war wasn't over slavery, how do i know this? because lincoln in his letter to greeley of 1862 tells me so, and me having to decide between the utter tripe you were taught in school that had been engineered from that time to cover the union tracks, and passed down generation after generation since, I'm believing the man who sent the invaders south in the first place (lincoln), i'll go with why he chose war, not your 'hopeful' explanation. the emancipation order was released at a time the south was winning the war, and it was done as a wartime measure to impede the south from defending itself successfully hope this helps.

(The next bit is probably why the person said that; however, it was definitely because of slavery and not states’ rights over trading and taxes that the Confederacy was created.) Back then, there was a new bill (the Morrill tariff bill) that made tariffs (a tax put on imported good/things from other countries) way higher, and since the south focused more on agriculture than manufacturing, they imported a lot of goods (and probably slaves). There was a whole thing with South Carolina saying that states should decide the tariffs in the state because most people in the south weren’t that rich and couldn’t buy some of the things that they were able to buy before the bill, and when SC seceded, they said the “true reason” they seceded was because of not being able to control tariffs. That’s bullshit though because, since Abraham Lincoln was the one to sign the Morrill tariff bill into law, they thought he was going to make slavery illegal too. And so they wanted to blame them seceding on the higher tariffs ‘cause it would make them look bad and make people not side with them if they said it was because of slavery.

Um, no. During the Civil War, not one black person fought for the North. There were plenty of blacks that volunteerer, but they were barred. Lincon himself said that he "didn't want a lot of armed negros running around" (paraphrase). Whereas from the very beginning there were black soldiers fighting for the Confederacy. Why? Because they were promised freedom. One of the first laws passed by the Confederacy was allowing slaveowners to actually free slaves under certain conditions, one of which was military service. Before then there was technically no way to actually free a slave, they could only be resold. Northern abolitionists would purchase slaves in the South for this reason.

The containment and eventual phasing out of slavery was a goal of Northerners, it was the majority-held view, including of Lincoln. There was also a sizeable minority of abolitionists up North, too who *cannot* be ignored. But how it would be phased out was the debate, as it was widely accepted that it would be nearly impossible to integrate POC into the wider society due to white supremacy being a majority held view in the North and South.

It’s basically who was being told what. The war was the United States against the rich elite in the south who controlled everything because everyone else down there was poor and uneducated… ….poor bastards didn’t know any better and were basically led at the nose by the elite to go fight their battles for them with promises of no taxes, of demands of loyalty to your own (your state and no one else), and sticken it to them damn yanks… …which was a sentiment shared by the north who hated those “uncultured, illiterate, and all around mentally deficient slave loving rebels”…. Which is still a sentiment felt today on both sides. It’s been that way for a VERY long time and seems to flair up every once in a while…. Like ever since 2016 and the unholy mud slinging from both sides that has continued to this day. I mean, there were entire towns in the south that defected from the confederacy and fought gorilla warfare against the confederacy! That’s why it’s not black and white, lumping everyone into that blanket statement is silly, but it was the reason war FOR the rich and wealthy slave owners… just not the reasons for those who ACTUALLY fought the war.

The movement started and was created specifically because they didn't want the federal government to abolish slavery.. actually the fact that the confederacy lasted as long as they did is odd, they were supposed to be wiped out the first 3 months, lincoln screwed up and lost ft sumter to south carolina, this started the war between the confederacy and the union. the union couldnt for the life of them take back that ft until the end of the war. as the history books say Lincoln had a dilemma. Fort Sumter was running out of supplies, but an attack on the fort would appear as Northern aggression. States that still remained part of the Union (such as Virginia and North Carolina) might be driven into the secessionist camp. People at home and abroad might become sympathetic to the South. Yet Lincoln could not allow his troops to starve or surrender and risk showing considerable weakness. so Lincoln moved to resupply his garrison that was originally asked to leave the territory of south Carolina, but the union said no, the wanted to keep the fort. this is the equivalent of Texas seceding , but the us government refuses to vacate their military bases when asked. december 1860, south Carolina secedes over slavery, no war started, they just leave to do their own thing, 5 days go by, the military militia of south carolina moves to secure its borders ft sumter occupied by union military refuses to vacate the ft the union government refuses to remove the military from the fort for obvious reasons as it is their base of operation. Lincoln is in a dilemma, he cant let his men starve, but if he resupplies them, it starts a war. Lincoln decides to feed his men as he cant convince the union to leave the base, the confederates attack the fort when they learn of resupply efforts the confederates take the fort, this is the start of the war. The confederates keep fortt sumter and slaughter all union forces for 4 years straight. the confederates never lost the fort that started the war, they gave it up, the union never won it back they just moved back in when the squatters decided it wasn't worth their time anymore.. for four years the union lost every fight to take the fort back. most folk these days cant go ten minutes without a phone and internet. history is weird.

You're obviously referring to what is colloquially known as the battleflag which was designed by william Porcher Miles and by the end of the war became the most recognizable symbol of the confederacy. It was never though the official national flag but used by of some of its military units, and most importantly by what will become the Army of Northern Virginia (at that time still called the Army of the Potomac and under Beauregard) and as the naval ensign on its warships. It's First National flag, the "stars and bars" had three broad stripes; red, white and red again and a field of blue with stars representing its states as its canton like the US flag. This of course was way too similar to the US flag and caused confusion on the battlefield. Because of this they introduced the Second National flag which was all white with the battleflag design as its canton. This was also known and the "Stainless Banner." This flag had the disadvantage that when there was little wind and the flag was at rest it just looked like an all white flag of surrender. (An idea they should have stuck with) Because of this the Third National was introduced which was identical to the Second National but had one vertical red stripe at its end. This was then known as the "Blood Stained Banner." By this time it was very late in the war, few were converted from the Second National and even Fewer were made and the battle flag design with its use by the major Confederate forces, on ships, and as the only meaningful part of its second and third national flags (the rest of it being empty white cloth) it remained the most recognizable symbol of the Confederacy on both sides. That is to say; if one flies a CSA flag, battle or otherwise, they are 'honoring' their Southern Heritage in the same manner as if one were to fly a Nazi flag to 'honor' their German Heritage. .

Yeah. As a southerner I’ve heard this argument all my life and believed it for a while. But when you look into it you find that the entire idea that it was JUST about “rights” was propagated by slave owners who were trying to justify how they tore apart the country for their profit margins on the plantations. Most of those scripts are post war and the same people who wrote them were all in on the slavery and white supremacy aspect before the union kicked the south’s teeth in. After they lost the war, they scrambled to save face in the new era.

There are people flying the confederate battle flag in Montana and Washington states, as far from the south as you can get, and it's NOT because they had southern relatives.
