An anti-fascist look at one of an anti-fascist masterpiece.
CORRECTION: As many have pointed out, Italy did not lose WWI, so they were rewarded as part of the treaty of Versailles, unlike what I said. It was more that they received a much smaller piece and agreed with Germany that the share was exaggerated in Britain and France’s favor. I seemingly confused that agreement for a prior alliance, but I was mistaken. As such they were not defeated, but rather expecting more after the war and struggled with the perception of the treaty as a whole! I’m admittedly a bit ashamed of the history gaff there and have to admit my knowledge of World War 1 is not very good, so thank you for the corrections!

As a historian, I'm very happy that someone uses Paxton's definition. His theory work on fascism doesn't get the recognition (outside academia) that it deserves.

To be fair I was gonna use Eco’s but I realized it was gonna take 3 total minutes and it wasn’t worth it lol. Paxton’s was just as good, but more applicable and shorter!

Sorry to be a history nerd, but Italy fought *against* the Germans/Central Powers in WW1, so it wasn't that the treaties left them weak and confused like Germany, it's more that many Italians felt they didn't gain *enough* from being on the winning side of WW1. So, I guess they were left weak and confused in a way, just not as a defeated country.

At the time, the feeling of being snubbed was referred to as the mutilated victory (Vittoria mutilata), a term invented by nationalist writer Gabriele d'Annunzio, who was a role model for Mussolini. Also, small detail: The Treaty of Versailles only regulated the matters regarding Germany. There was a separate treaty (5 in total) for every country that fought on the loosing site (like the Treaty of Trianon for Hungary or the Treaty of Sèvres for the Ottoman Empire).

It was quite an interesting combination really. Italy wanted huge territorial concessions that kind of made sense in the still imperialistic attitudes of 1915 but seemed completely out of order by 1918, when many people were just tired of imperialism and the war. But by then Italy had sacrificed so many young lives that small gains just seemed insufficient. And the fascists stoked that fire and took advantage of it.

The whole "two blond men standing around mountains of corpses fighting over who is the blondest" is one of the best ways to explain what the endgame of fascism actually looks like that I've heard.

Good analysis in general, I've learnt a few things; the psychological and social aspects of Fascism are usually not touched upon due to a desire to reduce it completely to a matter of class struggle. I'm wondering however if someone can also defeat Fascism by appropriating its internal logic of conformity in some cases; I mean, if some people want to be mediocre, that shouldn't lead them to become the sewer of humanity; for example in countries the Axis invaded and the Communists resisted, or Fascists installed a puppet dictatorship with the aid of foreign agencies, Fascism ought to be seen as extremely unpatriotic and treasonous. Also, Fascists talk big about Machoism, but in practice end up being highly incompatible with what most people would perceive as "masculine", same with the archaic notions of "honour". Seriously, they're just a bunch of terrified backstabbing wussies, who can't satisfy women. 😂

I find it extremely difficult to take anything with line such as "an analysis of evil" seriously. Is it even worthy to spend time watching the half an hour video? I'm not interested in who is good or evil or similar childish nonsense, that kind of nonsense should have been phased out by the time you reached 25. I'm more interested in utilitarian approach to the material world as a function of synthesis between capitalism and socialism i.e. how do we progress further than the welfare state by relying on science and big data instead of any particular ideology.
@AdequateEmily

It’s called an analysis of evil because you can’t put fascism in the title without getting demonetized. It’s a video about fascism. Covering a movie about fascism. This is a film analysis channel.
