I was shocked by the callousness of the scheme to get Howard to step down.

I heard the premise for this and thought oh, this is kind of silly but whatever, until it dawned on me that the board members who were trying to gaslight were the ones portrayed sympathetically and got their way. Insane.

I had long thought that this movie was something my brain had conjured up, like it had been digitally removed from the iphone footage of my life. Now I can recommend this video as evidence of its existence. Thank you, Academy Award nominee AdequateEmily. And also Michael Pena.

I never thought I'd hear of a plot that combined the "corporate espionage via mind hack" element of Inception with the "Christmas spirits change someone's life" trope, which ends up played straight in a last-minute twist. On paper, that concept does sound way cooler than the actual movie. Could you imagine? A Christmas Carol where the dreams are an Inception-style heist planned by certain concerned individuals in Scrooge's circle.

I think your passion is what makes your videos so great. You make a 40 minute in depth critique of a terrible film but also can't suppress your passion for Boston sport to throw in some jibes at the Knicks being terrible. That's Emily magic right there

This plan feels like something the gang from it's always sunny in philadelphia would come up with only that would be intentionally dark and funny and this isn't.

This video is the best gift I could ask for. I loathe this movie with a passion. I first found out about it because the trailer used one of my absolute favorite songs, Remember Me by Thomas Bergersen. I ended up watching the movie as well and it pained me to no end that the song I walked down the aisle to at my wedding is tied to this trash can of a film. Your review was everything and more. I'm so glad you covered the deception in the trailer and how the 3 themes of the movie are not part of some greater idea but just shallow marketing terms. I seriously considered writing my own video essay about this movie but you hit every point I would have made with one exception. The movie tries to convince you that you're connecting to it on an emotional level by having these moms tell stories about their dead kids, but all this is, is just the emotional equivalent of a jump scare. Just a cheap way to draw emotion from the audience. Thank you for making this, I'm so glad that this movie is still getting dunked on to this day.

The worst part is, this movie could have worked if it had been a thriller or a satire mocking the false sentimentality in commercialized Christmas. It could have shown the board members as firmly in the wrong, acting on greed and willing to gaslight their friend, and the actors playing Time, Death and Love becoming reluctant to go through with the plan until one of them snaps and tells Howard the truth. He feels betrayed and fires the board members, but the whole experience does work as a wake-up call for him and he starts therapy. Then maybe there's a time skip and we see Howard much better. He runs into one of the actors, and they engage in friendly chatter. The end.

This is kind of how I feel about Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor. They spent the whole movie laughing at Buddy, not with him, teaching you a horrible lesson that he's discusting because he's fat, by just making fun of his weight over and over again, and then expects you to feel sympathy for him at the end and want the best for him, sympathy that the movie hast earned. You're supposed to think Buddy Love is suave and cool, at least at first, but you can clearly see that he's a complete jerk after five seconds. I don't buy that he'd want to be Buddy Love again after the first time, and I don't buy that the love interest would want to go out on a second date after how the first one went. The whole premise of this movie is ridiculous. I get how Jerry Lewis' shtick isn't for everyone, but at least Lewis' version had a variety of jokes, didn't repeat only two jokes over and over the whole movie, spent some time laughing with the Nutty Professor and sweet moments to feel sympathy for him, and had a working story arc.
@NinjaMatt2201
@NinjaMatt2201 Жыл бұрын
Jerry Lewis understood the importance of the Buddy Love scenes to the story, that Buddy Love needed to contrast with the Professor, so he gave Buddy Love a different tone, he wasn't goofy like the Professor, so those were scenes more serious, because that's what was needed to setup the story. You get that wrong, the whole movie doesn't work. Even so, Lewis managed to get two moments in the Buddy Love scenes that are genuinely funny, they are subtle and they work for the tone of those scenes. That's something that the Buddy Love scenes need, and the Murphy version doesn't have, subtlety. Eddie Murphy just keeps being goofy and loud throughout the Love scenes. No contrast between the two characters/transformations. It so completely fails to serve the story.
