The Grand Army of the Republic utilised the colour-based rank structure until after the Dark Reaper Crisis and before the Battle of Christophsis. At that point they began slowly implementing unit colours, especially for distinguished units. So Captain Rex likely wore red stripes until the system was changed, at which point he wore blue and we saw him in action on-screen. Rex seemed to act as Anakin Skywalker's personal aide, and sometimes commanded small groups of clones from other units in the 501st Legion. However, he predominantly led Torrent Company as a Captain until his promotion to Battalion Commander during the Siege of Mandalore. It is highly likely the 501st Legion was led by an unknown Senior Commander, with four unknown Regimental Commanders and 16 Battalion Commanders.
@red5t6533 жыл бұрын
Actually, of note: Rex himself calls it the 501st Clone Battalion, not a Legion. While this may fly in the face of basically everything we know about the 501st, there's a fairly simple explanation: when Vader took command, the 501st was upscaled to encompass the legion that previously held sway over the 501st and likely the 212th given that the two units were almost certainly in the same Corps.

It's likely that First Lieutenants were also second in command of a Company, so in that case it would likely be a First Lieutenant second in command to the Captain and the 4 Platoons each being lead by a Second Lieutenant, so it would likely depend if it is a stand alone Platton or 1 of 4 Platoons in a Company, if stand alone the leader is a First Lieutenant, if part of a Company it is a Second Lieutenant. I feel like the rank structure is confusing to us because we are looking at it in terms of a modern military, but when you consider that it’s fiction, it makes more sense because it doesn’t have to follow the same system that we do. They have some things that are based off of modern armies (sergeants command squads, lieutenants command platoons, etc.), but that doesn’t mean it all has to follow that structure.
@Jean-wx4wh3 жыл бұрын
Furthermore, we need to look at a larger view, people only compare it to the American army, but if you look at other armies, more element has sense. By exemple, the legions are not only a Roman structure, same has the rank, Commander is a rank of some armies, but in other, it's not. I personnally find this much more interesting because a simple reconstruction of the USA army would be quiet weird.

Cheers for discussing this subject mate. I have a few things that I believe need more explanation into however. For instance, the rank of Corporal was a junior NCO position. Corporal’s duties entailed such things as: • They were the assistant squad leader and would fill in as Squad leader in the Sergeant's absence. • Conducted all administration within the squad. • Commanded the support by fire (SBF) within the squad. • Understudied the Sergeant • Reported to the Platoon Sergeant (sergeant major) periodically in regards to the squads administration. And lead a fire team of four troopers including himself. Also, a platoon sergeant (Sergent Major) was classed as a Senior NCO position. Some of the duties as follows: He would assist and mentor the platoon leader. Carry out all discipline within the platoon. Was the SBF Commander in a platoon attack/assault. And Coordinated all administration through the 2IC’s (Corporals) from each squad within the platoon. (Ammo and rations.)
@MattU49705 жыл бұрын
In the U.S. Army, Corporal is the worst rank in the Army. All of the responsibility (of a NCO) and none of the pay. CPLs get tagged for sh*tty NCO jobs the "real" NCOs don't want to do, and their (paygrade) peers don't respect them.

Captain Rex and Commander Cody are like four ranks apart, yet they're shown to be peers with equivalent level of seniority and command roughly equal sized units. I mean, I get they're brothers, they've fought together and commanded alongside one another, but not once does Rex in the entire series ever refer to Cody as "sir" or ever receive any orders from him.. There's letting your guard down for someone you trust and then there's just blatant disrespect for the regulations of your army. I suppose this is explained by them both being ARC Troopers and having fought in so many battles together, but seriously, Cody is technically about as far above Rex in the chain of command as Rex is above a fresh recruit, yet not only they forget this, but it seems like sometimes even the show itself forgets they aren't the same rank.

What had confused me the most before was the coloured phase 1 clone rankings just disappearing in the Clone Wars tv series. With this video in mind I guess all the phase 1 clone sergeants and lieutenants from TCW got their rank through promotion, which would at least give an explanation as to why they wouldn't have the coloured stripes. So basically from my understanding; phase 1 clones bred for a certain rank have the corresponding coloured stripe, but clones who are ranked b/c they were promoted keep their standard white armour (and probably customize it)
@jordan99615 жыл бұрын
I think the better head canon is that the GAR removed obvious indicators of rank from front line soldiers. Clone commanders appear to be the exception, and this could be because they weren't supposed to be fighting on the frontlines. Obviously, the truth is that its easier to make a show if you only need to have one model for the clones. It's why in the first season there are white troopers fighting next to named clones who have battalion paint schemes. Only in the later seasons with the money being thrown at Clone Wars did they actually make "unique" models for different troopers.
@ANite-vx1vk4 жыл бұрын
It seems like an incredibly bad idea to paint bright stripes on specific clones during war. Pretty much just targets for the droids saying "hey this one is *really* important shoot this one first!" It makes more sense to color code them based on what unit/Garrison/battalion etc. they serve in, like they did in clone wars. A colored stripe, small, could be added somewhere on their armor to signify rank, but not massive stripes. Chests, shoulders, a couple inches long. Very cool design, bad tactically.

The most baffling aspect about rank structure is that when Ep2 came out it was cannonized that the colour markings were the explicit indication of rank but after Ep2 colour markings were to indicate an entire legion. The only reliable way to tell clone rank is to look at how much gear they have on.
@godsdj73164 жыл бұрын
Clone ranks were used during the First Battle of Geonosis and Dark Reaper Crisis but were quickly phased out when everyone realized what a bad idea it was to paint a big colourful target on officers so that snipers could get them. By the Battle of Christophsis, clone units were beginning to adorn unit-wide markings instead.

Plus we don't truly know where Regimental Commander falls, we just amuse they outrank Battalion Commanders since Regiments are larger than Battalions and contain 4 Battalions, but the is a possibility that it is like First Sergeant and Master Gunnery Sergeant, where they are equal but separate ranks.
@3ggztr3m3b33tz2 жыл бұрын
I always thought they were using the real life naval system, i.e. a place where commanders exist and are a thing as a rank. You still have your lieutenants and captains, but things are slightly switched around. In addition, irl naval captains are roughly equivalent to colonels, which always made more sense to me as to why Captain Rex would be directly reporting to and associating with Jedi generals.

Loved the video Geetsly's! The Four units I'd rather be with are one's that I came up with myself. They are the 22nd Volcano Corps commanded by Commander Lava (CC-1323) with a strength of 20 Regiments of 46,080 Troops; The 619th Attack Battalion commanded by Commander Junior (CC-6198) with a pretty standard strength of 576 Troops; The 98th Elite Corps commanded by Commander Miller (CC-1438) with a standard strength of 36,864 Troops; Finally the 82nd Airborne Legion commanded by Commander Taylor (CC-2263-80) with a standard strength of 9,216 Troops. These units will of course have their own colors for their armor as listed below: • 22nd Volcano Corps - Think about Ki-Adi-Mundi's 21st Nova Corps, but with Black and Gray instead of Dark Red and White. • 619th Attack Battalion - Think about the 212th Attack Battalion, but with a Dark Red-Orange instead of the Yellow or Gold. • 98th Elite Corps - Think about the 41st Elite Corps, but with Olive Green markings instead of the Dark Forest Green. • 82nd Airborne Legion - If you watch SorensiC SteeL and the men of the 101st Airborne division, think of them but with Khaki Drab markings instead of the Green/Dark Green that they have. Don't ask about how I came up with the units, commander names or the Clone Designations, unless you really want to know! I just came up with some good sounding unit names and colors when I watched SorensiC SteeL's 3 plus hour long Joint Op with the 212th and the 101st Airborne division. The names and designations I just came up with, so hopefully I didn't misplace anything or something.

I think the most confusing thing about the rank structure is the fact that the 501st had a commando in appo but captain Rex who was just in charge of torrent company within the 501st seemed to have more command authority and worked directly with Jedi general Skywalker on battle plans
@franciscoramirez85885 жыл бұрын
Well Appo was a Sergeant during the Battle of Umbara and I think he was given the rank of Clone Commander after Rex went to the Siege of Mandalore with Ahsoka... Though as to why the 501st did not have a Clone Commander till then does not make any sense

While the color-coding is convenient for identifying officers due to similar armor and physical appearance, it would also act as a beacon to enemies who wanted to target high ranking officers. It's why normal armies don't salute while in the field, just to reduce the chance of an officer being spotted.

You're or the writers seem to be using standard military units from our world, which ties in to my intense gripe about numbers during the clone wars. 36000 men are just insanely too few for a planetary assault
@avathiana8665 жыл бұрын
Kathir Tahasin Unless there was just a small but concentrated presence of Separatists in one or a few locations on the planet I think 36000 might be feasible. I don’t think even the droid army had enough numbers to cover entire worlds and if they did it would be a waste of resources. Like with Naboo, I think they concentrated on key locations like a capital city or something and expanded outward from a particular location only if it was necessary. We know the droids heavily outnumbered the clones no matter what but the clones were more skilled so I think in some scenarios 36000 would probably be enough to eliminate a separatist presence on the smaller worlds and moons if a proper strategy was implemented effectively. Also, who knows, maybe the droids maintained control of a planet with little resistance with less than 36000 at some points in the war?
@kathirtahasin44525 жыл бұрын
@@avathiana866 I've heard this argument before, but see, assume earth is a standard planet. During ww2, when we had far fewer people and our mobilization potential was far less, tens of millions were deployed on both sides. You want to make the argument that an army in the thousands, especially with low IQ droids whose entire schtick is numerical superiority, is going to be able to hold a planet with tens of thousands? Even in the middle ages an army of that size would be considered small for any well sized empire. A planet's local forces would just overrun such a small force. And here's the deal, you cant even make the argument that planets arent as populated as earth. Dry ass geonosis had a population in the billions, as CONFIRMED by the rebels series. This is while in the CW series the reps are whinging about 5 million new troops. I mean come on. Another inconsistency: the empire's star destroyer corps had BILLIONS of soldiers (not nearly as large as it should be, but at least its something), and a SIGNIFICANT portion of that were stormtroopers, who are supposed to be elite shock troopers as opposed to enlisted personell (who are meant to make u a larger percentage, otherwise the word elite has no meaning). Assuming clone trooepers are analogous to stormtroopers, How did the empire blow up a magintude in the tens of thousands of percent in slightly more than a decade? No society has such capacity, and if they did, they would definitely hit a signicant portion of that within the massive GALACTIC war that was just raging. Military recruitment skyrockets during war, it doesnt do nearly as much AFTER, even with massive militarization. This is all from official new canon btw.
@avathiana8665 жыл бұрын
Kathir Tahasin Most planets in the galaxy like Alderaan and Naboo had no space defense systems in place. So, I think if your planet was in constant threat of orbital bombardment by the blockade of an invading force (also capable of landing more troops anywhere at anytime) I don’t think there would be very much ground resistance or uprisings on the planet (especially if the local populace are ill-equipped and are peaceful planets with not much of a history of war behind them. If they were compared to the artillery and tech of the Separatists like anti-infantry Hail-fire droids later in the war they wouldn’t stand a chance. The gungan uprising would’ve been crushed if the Separatists had more advanced tech and they almost were anyways with just B1s and AATs.) I agree with you that I don’t think it’s likely for 36,000 droids to hold a planet but I was imagining their numbers to be much higher (especially considering fleets could transport and land troops at any time) but as for a clone garrison or legion sent to destroy a presence of 100,000 droids then I’m sure more often than they had to rely on 36000 to combat a hundred thousand. But that wouldn’t matter as you said since the droids have very low IQ and they also don’t have Jedi. So it’s definitely feasible that 36,000 clones could destroy a hundred thousand droids or even many more given that their technology is on par with theirs.
@kathirtahasin44525 жыл бұрын
@@avathiana866 a ratio of 10 to 1 is not a problem sure; but here's the thing, naboo or alderaan arent poor. Alderaan was even famous for their large fleets of blockade runners and other associated ships, so much so that they were known to donate many for "humanitarian relief efforts" (read rebels) during the imperial era. And granted a non military power could be taken aback in peace-time as was in episode 1, but this is full scale war time. Most soldiers in most wars are never career military personell, but hastily conscripted recruits. Even military backwaters like naboo should be able to field millions of troops on a whim, enough to again overrun an army of a hundred thousand, even a heavily armed mobile one. Naboo, as an example, isnt poor. Heck, even if you don't give the millions of raw recruits the support of heavy weapons and vehicles or fleet support (which the republic should be able to field btw, given how industrial just their capital is, but assume they can't), being outnumbered a thousand to one (which is what would happen if a planet half the density of earth even barely tried to go for full mobilization, i.e. hundreds of millions vs hundreds of thousands, which is what you'd expect given a planetary invasion no?) means no amount of artillery support can stem the tide of innumerable troops who btw has an advantage on strategic knowledge of locat terrain. An invading force almost always has to outnumber the local garrison if they want to occupy a nation beyond holding a few key positions (which is necessary if you really want to conquer a planet in modern contexts, otherwise overwhelming guerrila tactics will drive you off VERY fast). And if orbital bombardment is an issue, yeah I can see how that would keep a planet in check but if that was the case it would negate the entire purpose of ground base war troops and artillery. Also this would need to assume high wealth centers like naboo doesnt have masssive orbital defenses and planetart shields. I just dont see how either side can wage war properly in the context of the trillions who live in the galaxy without at least numbering in the billions themselves
@avathiana8665 жыл бұрын
@@kathirtahasin4452 It's definitely a strong argument I won't deny you that. I think it would mainly depend on the planet under siege, their culture, and ability to mobilize an army assuming the republic could not aid their effort. For example we know the Wookiees had no issue mobilizing an army but their tech was so primitive they would not have lasted without the republic on their own even if they numbered in the millions. I can imagine the case is very similar with a lot of these other worlds. We know the droid army has the ability to mass produce and with the placement of a blockade can land more reinforcements at any time and so they could overrun (along with their advanced tech) a hastily conscripted army with primitive technology compared to their own. Many of these planets are not wealthy enough to stand up against a galactic superpower on their own (with near unlimited financial funding like the Seps had) in a drawn-out sustained conflict. The richer worlds like Alderaan would certainly have a much better chance on their own, I agree, but we saw with poor planets like Ryloth how their people were starving and nearly beat into submission and had to be liberated by the republic. (Also, it wasn't just the 212th battalion on Ryloth, we know Mace Windu and his legion was also present at one point along with General Ima-gun-di, captain Keeli, and their legion) I do agree 36000 is too small for a planetary attack but we know the republic used more than one legion to liberate planets (Ryloth and Umbara are examples) I do see your point though. The numbers being worked with are too small. I think an easy way to answer all this is that there had to be MANY more clones then we are led to believe as well as TEN times as many droids as we tend to think. It's totally not unreasonable to assume there were local resistances numbering in the millions which opposed the droids also. I just tend to think they would be crushed like they were on Ryloth and would have been on planets like Kashyyyk.
