Ever go to Disneyland and see the mysterious languages written on the walls in certain places? Welp, it turns out they're not as impressive as you might think. They still look cool though.

If it makes you feel a *little* better, aurebesh's name is derived from the names of the first two letters: aurek and besh. It's *literally* the alphabet, and they at least don't claim to be anything more.

Huttese is an actual conlang in Star Wars. At least in Star Wars, a lot of the languages are conlangs, but so that the media is accessible they made galactic basic just be English, though at least in Aurebesh they made the consonant clusters eo, kh, ng, sh and th seperate letters, but they are optional.

I would have made a script that looks like cryptic symbols, but if you tilt your head to the right, the symbols can faintly be read as regular alphabet letters that read top-to-bottom (so they are right-to-left if you don't tilt your head), and also every written sentence is phrased in the way that Yoda speaks. That would be the bare minimum though, I can think of some slightly more ambitious ideas.

@@haydend.maniac227 I was trying to explain it to someone and I showed him a symbol that looked like a little dinosaur, but if you turn your head 90 degrees then it looks like the word "THE", he understood it immediately. I think it would also be really fun for the visitors, way more fun than a lazy cipher script.

it's a shame that this is all they used, because DJP and Marc Okrand have both made Marvel/Disney conlangs. but I guess since Thor 2 and Atlantis were not, like, *super* well-received that there's some call not to put them everywhere

Well, I'm a conlanger but I don't believe there should be a conlang for everything. I don't think a fictional language is worth creating for a few signs if it's not going to be spoken by any character, for instance.

On one hand it would be such a small blip for Disney to care for a proper conlang that it's infuriating (maybe they're burned from trying because the only time they had one, the movie bombed? Talking about Thor 2). On the other hand, I'm praying to whatever gods be listening that Disney's "infinite" resources dwindle faster every day

I know it might depress your nerdy linguistic side, but you should know better than anyone how much effort it is to make a conlang. The directors barely want to pay their actors, never mind hire a linguist to invent a language that 99% of the audience won't care about, other than to think "Oh, the aliens/foreigners are speaking a different language". But, what is really cool about those pictures of Disney that you shared, is the constructed scripts. I love a good constructed script as much as a good conlang. You might say "A cipher of the basic 26-letter Latin alphabet ISN'T a good constructed script for most languages other than English!". And, you would be right in one sense. A good constructed script is one that looks good and elegantly represents the sound system/grammar of the language it is used to write. But, in the absence of inventing an actual conlang, the next best thing to give your fantasy world (especially in movie format) is a constructed script. And, if that constructed script is just being used to write English or some other real life language, a cipher is the easiest thing to learn for both the fans and the movie set designers. Imagine if they gave the Lord of the Rings actors the script with Elvish written in the Tengwar script? They would not only have to learn a new language to read your lines, but also a new alphabet. Also, when you are inventing a cipher, you don't have to worry about how well it represents another foreign or constructed language. You are free to make the letter shapes whatever you'd like, as long as you have 26 letters total. There is even more freedom in making a constructed script that doesn't represent spoken language at all, or are pictographic/ideographic, representing objects and abstract ideas rather than standing for words. But, if you are aiming for a constructed script that vaguely looks like it is used to write a real language, even if it isn't really being used to write any language, it is best to use a cipher or base it on an actual language (whether a real language or a constructed language), rather than just freely drawing shapes, because it can quickly devolve into total randomness unless it is being used to write a language.

These are not conlangs though. These are just scripts. At least for Aurebesh, the Star Wars one, it is IN UNIVERSE just a script used to write Galactic Basic (aka, English). A conlang would be something like dragon language from Skyrim. That is a conlang, though it is a cypher for English. I will say, it does bother me that for many, a script equates a language.

Dude, its a theme park. Conlangs are too big brain for nearly 99% of park goers. The fact that people interchange cypher with language should tell you that much. Edit: also disney doesn’t have infinite resources. Otherwise they wouldn’t be considering selling themselves off to apple.
