Many people have asked me how to choose the vibes and aesthetics for their conlangs, so I've finally put together a quick explanation of how you can derive inspiration from natural languages for your constructed languages.

I often that it is beneficial for me to NOT learn about a natlang before emulating it. Years ago, I made a conlang based on my impression of Arabic, and while I was starting work on it, I did research into what it actually is, and the difference was massive and distracting. I decided to ignore almost everything that I had learned, as it didn't fit with what I was going for, and I ultimately ended up with a language that I was satisfied with at the time. Had I made it more like real Arabic, I don't think that I would have liked my resulting conlang as much, nor would it have been as interesting or unique.

Also, learning about a natlang too much will cause your language to feel TOO much like the natlang, which will rob it of some originality, which i personally don't like

The talk of "cursed conlangs" reminds me of that time I made an insanely minimalist conlang in like 30 minutes. It had exactly ten words.

My guide for making a conlang: 1) Make a cursed conlang. 2) fix it with sound changes, and grammatical evolution.

I personally don't try to emulate the vibes of real life languages, I think that what I consider to be a language's "vibe" is just how the language is different from my native language, and thus mimicking another language's "vibe" is pushing my bias onto my conlangs.

Another suggestion is to read the poem "The Jabberwocky" which is the perfect example of phonaesthetics. Even though there are plenty of nonsense words, you can clearly understand what they imply. It can make you think about how language can form.

I just created a conlang, where I mixed all the languages I love. But! I don't copied their grammars or something like that. I just borrowed their sounds, so my language can sound like them, but with a completely different grammar. And you know, I love this conlang. But I still sucks at making good grammar.
