After running the gauntlet of anti-austerity protesters shouting ‘Tory scum’ outside the conference hall in Manchester, Owen Jones meets the Conservative party faithful. Despite winning the general election the party has struggled to win the youth vote. So what does make a young person become a Conservative activist? What makes a Tory tick?

+William Luderman Exactly. I do find it quite hypocritical for people like Owen to talk about how the media manipulates public perception etc and then would employ almost subliminal camera tricks like this to get a message across. Anyone also notice how desaturated the colour of the image is here compared to the Labour conference video? I know that Owen himself doesn't edit these videos and I do enjoy his output but it's blatant tricks like this that just make me realise this channel is not here for fair and impartial political analysis. There's an agenda just like most other political commentators.
@pillspoo
@pillspoo 9 жыл бұрын
+Calvin Dyson | James Bond Reviewer Hmm, I have looked at both the videos you mention and I think the saturated look in this video is most likely down to overexposure caused by too much natural light at the venue. Whereas the labour conference video has much more artificial light and less natural causing it to look "warmer". Just a thought, feel free to correct me if (you believe) I'm wrong.

I am a scouser - I find it so, so hard to believe that lad was telling the truth. I really don't think listening to radio 4 for even 70 years could change an accent to that extent. My uncle has lived in London since he was 20 and is now in his 60s and still has a strong scouse accent.

I nearly spat my tea out when that young guy said he grew up in Liverpool. If anything I think it's very sad that he thought he had to lose his accent to be amongst the Tory Party, that's the impression I got. To me it was clearly a plastic accent as it was so obviously fake. I'm from Liverpool as well so I know that was definitely put on. "I grew up listening to Radio 4." That made me laugh. His entire persona just screams Tory (although I'm aware that's a stereotype).

I am conservative because socialism always fails when they run out of other people’s money. Sweden and Finland went completely bankrupt in mid 1990s. They only improved after trimming down their socialism. Venezuela has more oil reserves than Saudi Arabia, same population, and much better agricultural soil and water. However, there is now famine in it, and dogs disappeared from its streets. 500 million Chinese got rid of abject poverty since the Chinese government rolled down socialism and introduced free market capitalisation.

I'm never surprised that Owen Jones tends to pick questions that are really just an attempt to standardize and categorize people into little boxes. "You're not typical as young tories" - "You don't have a typical Merseyside accent" and "Where has your accent gone" - what has any of this got to do with people becoming conservatives or not? I always find it interesting that it's the left who harangue, insult, judge, segregate and categorize people...while criticizing the right for apparently doing that....

+homer blair Awww bless, why do you Tories, or New Labour (closet Tories) insist on constantly re referring to the 70's, the world has moved on and clearly those on the right are scared of that, so hoard and financially/economically rape and pillage the resources and people of this country and lets not forget not even the charcuterie (yup I had to go there) is safe. You acuse the left of being stuck in the past and kinda doesnt make sense because the values Jeremy Corbyn now espouses have been the same since the 70's but most of it has held up to the scrutiny of time, you (possibly not you personally) Tories want to head back to the days of Dickins cos im sure you all miss us commoners doffing our hats 2 u in deference and as to actually addressing your points, NEW LABOUR lead to the iraq war, you forget to mention how fucked the 80's were when we had the bride of satan as PM, financial collapse propigated first by Thatcher then Blair and any fuckin neo liberal leader who wanted a part of the action, the banks died, we bailed them out, the Toried would have done the same, no people didnt want re branded Tory policy they wanted a choice that wasnt offered in the first past the post voting system we have, and no where on the fuckin planet is 24% of the voting populace even close to being a representative of a majority and they have the fuckin cheek to insist that workers who want to strike need a 50% majority, yeah lucky that rule isnt in place huh

Unfortunately gmonkey808 the very essence of neoliberalism economics is this exact description greed, selfishness etc which the tories have pushedi into society then New Labour followed. Have you heard of the Powell Memo of 1970's? Do you not see how think tanks such as the Fraser Institute have pushed an economic system that favours only the world's wealthiest into the mainstream through the lobbying and corruption of our governments? Do you understand that many of democratically elected members of government who should represent those of their constituency have vested interests instead of serving large corporations? Do you believe that this should go unchallenged? By the way this goes for all our corrupt goverments since the 1970's...

Labor supporters rant about discrimination yet they are stereotyping this kid. My dad grew up in a poor barrio in South America and I partially grew up there as well. No PC, just a baseball playing near the river when people were getting shot up and down the street all day. Having to ration meals because there was no bread or milk, constantly losing weight and getting sick all the time. Just because you improve your livelihood doesn't mean you were posh forever. Such ridiculous discrimination. Some peoples accents change. I moved from Florida to Scotland and my accent softened up after 4 years. It isn't something unreasonable.

+homer blair Blair won a 66 seat-majority in 2005 on just over 21% of the vote. In disproportionate terms that was even worse, however not as many people weren't listening then. That was due in part to both parties lacking any real difference between them. They're listening now though because they see the struggles ahead of them with a full-fledged Tory government for the next four and a half years.

Leaving the EU and the EU referendum of 2016 R (Miller) v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union (UKSC 2016/0196) If the Supreme Court did decide that Parliamentary approval of Article 50 was necessary, then all future referendums (voting) outcomes could be subject to Parliamentary approval, and not accepted under prerogative powers. This is a dangerous scenario, as the Country could find itself voting out an unpopular Government, only to have the same restored by the precedent created in Miller and the ratio decidendi of the Supreme Court in 2016. In other words, all future voting outcomes of the people would merely be an expression of Public opinion, not to be taken seriously. This would harm everyone, including the “remain”camp.

Once upon a time religion protected the ordered society. Kings ruled by Divine Right, supported by the Lords, nobility and so on until you found the riff raff at the bottom all obeying God's vision. Today peasants and slaves of modern society, better known as the lower classes do not believe in the ordained society of God. Education replaces the justification of order. The working class are only at the bottom of society through their own making (or so they believe..). Statistically social mobility is rare as in reality we still have a system of elitism. Those descending downwards even rarer (even for those individuals of upper class who fail miserably in education). Of course all those industriously working individuals of lower class backgrounds have complete faith in this system the Tories promotes (the just core values of a good society peddled by the right wing media). Stereotypes are employed as a symbol of those claiming benefits, when the reality is this "despicable" example portrayed by our mainstream media represents a tiny majority. Yet the working class swallow it up because obviously national newspapers could not possibly lie...!!

+Stu Mackenzie By any chance do you not find the arguments of "you have to vote for what benefits you most" or "don't you want to be rich some day" not convincing enough to encourage an income curve that looks like a brick wall? Perhaps you disagree with using serious topics and policies that will drastically effect peoples lives as part of a media game to undermine the opposition? I wouldn't worry about it. Overall the conservative party don't do politics to be correct... they do it to win... and up until recently so did labour. If you are looking for real solutions based on policies it's usually smaller parties that do the best to come up with workable ideas but small parties can also be just as interested in appeals to fear or prejudice.

@BarnibusMaximusMusic
@BarnibusMaximusMusic 9 жыл бұрын
peterweterp I find that is the price problem though. Whilst there are some brilliant philosophical arguments about how it is moral to be social I have never heard any arguments that being conservative is intelligent that would pass a basic logic screening never mind actually being compelling. If you avoid the logic side of it then the usual argument is economics but the more you learn about economics the more you realise leaders have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. You hear cameron using 'inflation' as a synonym for 'danger of economic failure' all the time which after the first ten minutes of economics classes you will very clearly see that the idea that 'inflation is always bad all of the time' is just plain stupid. Also the idea that we can simply replace the welfare state with employment by making it less desirable to be unemployed is completely ignoring both the vast amounts of research as to where the unemployment rise came from and also it is ignorant of the economic model of corporate employment used to increase availability of jobs.

+Arsenal You must've missed a memo or two then. Hezbollah is the Palestinian terrorist group whose highest goal it is to shed the blood of innocent civilians. In addition to their terrorism, they also fight against Syrians on behalf of the unholy alliance of the dictator Assad, Tehran, and the Russian neofascist regime. This since Tehran basically runs Hezbollah. And runs George Galloway, the corrupt MP, by the way.

Very brave to go there. The Tories have done a brilliant job at giving the impression that in fact nobody needs state help and that those who get it in any form are scroungers and have brought their problems on themselves. A lot of those young people seem to be talented and they will always be in a position to not need outside help. Plus, they will probably get a good salary at the expense of others in whatever organisation they are in who are lower paid., What they need to realise is that they are also idealistic rather than pragmatic.

When asked why are you a Tory, the best that they could come up was "because its what I believe in", but what I want to know is, what do they believe in? As a socialist I believe in a more equal distribution of wealth, whereas Tories do not! Perhaps the reason that these Tories do not say what they believe in, is because being honest and saying, because I'm Greedy; doesn't sound very pleasant; perhaps because it isn't!?
