Bought the game. Loaded it up. Killed my self. Began quest. Went to what is obviously Norwich and got some bullets. Got caught by evil cult and escaped. Reached Stonehenge. Made it to summoning ritual with eight health. Found out only have one of the four symbols for the spell. Guessed the spell and banished the wrong god causing me to die. Definitely recommended.

An interesting effect that might be made to sanity is that when sanity is low, it randomly jumps to a higher number, so you can't be sure when you go insane
@Leo-pw3kf9 жыл бұрын
Having bought and played the game I can say: General first impressions are basically right. Atmosphere and writing are good, combat and graphics blow. I'd add my two cents by saying that the whole investigation aspect is something rarely seen in videogames and that has been done really well, if a bit too shallowly. I also like the fact that bullets are scarce, combat is hard and sanity is almost impossible to regain. This way, horror emanates not only from the atmosphere and writing, but from gameplay, as it should be in a horror game. Counterbalancing the compliments, I have two basic complaints with the game, besides the obvious ones: the whole thing is too easy for a roguelike, wich usually implies in multiple playthroughs, but in this case you could easily get to the end in less than 10 tries. Also, Yahtzee didn't write enough text, things repeat too often. Overall, the game is worth playing, although it has some pretty glaring flaws. I feel that Yahtzee should revisit the concept in the future, ideally after assembling a small team to help him in production. If percfected, the game could be something glorious. As of right now, it's basically allright.

I know this is a god amongst nitpicks, but one of the roadsign sprites (the rectanglar 25mph speed limit sign) is actually shown in the US style, not British. British speed limit signs are circular with a red border and could only ever display values of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60. There's also a yellow sign I don't recognise, which could also be foreign.

The main criticism I've seen people having is that it looks like a shitty browser game. I've been playing it all afternoon and it has a real Silent Hill feel to it -- the combat is dreadfully clumsy, but the atmosphere is brilliant. It's also like FTL, in that the depth of gameplay is really absorbing and that getting to the endgame is bloody impossible.
@Bluecho49 жыл бұрын
Dirk Bogan Heck, the combat in Silent Hill was pretty clumsy (except in Homecoming, but that's not a point in the game's favor).
@davidkyo19859 жыл бұрын
Bluecho4 I think that's exactly what he meant: it's reminiscent of SH because of the shitty combat (good gawd, warrior, correlate your feces) and good atmosphere.
@Zeph101theoriginal9 жыл бұрын
Dirk Bogan Yeah the combat in Silent Hill 2 was fairly clunky which was meant to add to the atmosphere but also remember it was typically advantageous to avoid combat whenever possible, your ability to attack was mostly there as a defense mechanism in case you were cornered. Fighting monsters is a big part of this game since if you leave a room with undefeated enemies your sanity meter then goes down. I think the game would be better if the monsters clearly telegraphed their attacks and were a bit more clunky in their movements as much as the main character is, à la the way how monsters work in Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Giving the player a dodge move wouldn't hurt either.
@davidkyo19859 жыл бұрын
Zeph101theoriginal There's one unlockable melee-oriented character with a dodge move (even though his animations make me wince) should one want a more Dark Souls-y approach to problems. Also you need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of scarpering from a fight; getting almost killed but winning is less preferable to losing 2-4 sanity most of the time. Anyway, sanity is actually much less meaningful than it was in the alpha, I find. The QTE to not shoot yourself is much more forgiving so basically it only influences SOME of the random encounters, your spellcasting ability, the weird random interface screws in dungeons and maybe the ending (which is why I save the drugs for Stonehenge in my playthroughs even if my sanity gets low due to a series of unfortunate events).
@chipper_dude9 жыл бұрын
Dirk Bogan I got to the end game in like 2 1/2 hours, and banished the god.
@AußerirdischeLebensForm9 жыл бұрын
So, I have two questions. One of them even serious. Didn't Nintendo hold a patent on insanity effects inflicted on the player depending on a bar that can be altered within the game? I think they still do and that apperantly, besides from incompetence, was a major problem for anyone having a concept like Eternal Darkness in mind (that is where their patent came from) but had to work around that to avoid lawsuits. I know that one can't claim a copyright on gameplay stuff per se, but if it's as specified as in that patent, it assumingly can cause problems for developers after all. What is your opinion on that? And the second question is: Will the next title be The Devouring Shade?

I just started playing this game, and I must say, it's a great game, I just wish it was slightly better. There has to be a way to make the combat less clunky, there has to be! Also while the writing is great, it's not quite varied enough, if he just wrote maybe twice the town descriptions it would have been enough, but they were already repeating themselves heavily on my second run. I really want to love this game, and it's so close to being perfect, if Yahtzee just sucked it up and got help for his art, wrote more content, and went back to the drawing board on the combat engine, this game could seriously rival the best as far as indie games go. I'm not kidding, this could be as popular as FTL if he just put a few more months of polish on it. Maybe we'll get a re-release special edition down the road.

Pros: - Great gameplay, both the FTL elements of exploration and the side scrolling horror survival elements - Great monster design (of what you can see which I feel adds to the vibe). - I really like when you travel to new areas and it shows like smokey/foggy rooftops. Again really adds to the atmosphere. - Story is pretty simple but effective to explain the game premise. Cons: - Certian things could have had a cleanup to make it look a bit more professional (I know you created this alone so it's amazing what you did and I'm not being too negative about it). It's mostly UI stuff look a bit sloppy. I just feel with a little lick of paint so to speak, it would help ensure the player that is the game is much better than the presentation and entice people who may not recognize yahtzee's name. I just want good games to be recognized as widely as possible - No reference to homosexual rape and no-one just wanted to go to space. Joking aside, easily your strongest game yet. The side scrolling survival horror gameplay is worth a look at alone (has anyone actually done this before? Seems so simple yet refreshingly original not to have been done before)

This reminds me a little of the book series The Laundry Files by Charles Stross. If Lovecraft is your thing, I'd recommend the series.

I voted for this on Greenlight. I'm not usually into survival horror, but the world Yahtzee has built intrigues me.

Gabe, How did you feel about that fourth episode of Life Is Strange? Do you feel comfortable talking about it? Are you satisfied with your choices? What would you do to Yahtzee over and over if you had rewind powers?

I have to admit, when I saw all the pictures and early gameplay videos for this, I wasn't impressed but I bought it after watching this because the gameplay elements looked interesting. To be honest, it was the detective elements that sold it for me. I've done 2 playthroughs so far and I'm really glad I bought it. Definitely a 'more than meets the eye' game, thanks Yahtzee. My second playthrough, I got all the clues for the invader, knew everything there was to know about all three, stocked up on ammo and health, had really good items equipped, entered Stonehenge with 9 hours to go... Realised I only had one of the runes for the banishing ritual. Panicked and went to other towns to try and find some, no luck, run out of time. Unlocked a new character in those final hours though, so not an entirely sad thing!

Andy Robison Which character did you unlock and how? I just completed a run with the ministry man, but I haven't found the other characters so far.
@progfoxmusic9 жыл бұрын
I unlocked the witch, I went to a town where there were meant to be 3 hostages in a building but 2 were dead and the witch survives. She then tells you to meet her in another town with the pentagram necklace and you then have to clear out another dungeon and voila.

this looks really fun to play and would probably gain a lot from a more aesthetically pleasing UI

What I (and seemingly others) thought looked like just another simple flash game, of which you can find countless similar ones to play for free on Newgrounds or something, now looks pretty darn fun to me. Definitely voting this up on Greenlight, awesome stuff. Congrats on getting it done, and I hope sales go well!

Funnily enough, despite having been through this series more times than I care to count, I've never actually played The Consuming Shadow. I bought it on a steam sale just to support the creator (as one does) but never got around to playing it. Today is going to be slow enough at work to do some gaming, so I decided today is the day I fix that. I'll come back if I have any wacky stories to post. Of course first I have to do the classic trial by fire of any roguelite: "Am I going to Win my first run?" Assuming I make it past the games first major boss (the "Kill Myself" button) I'm liking my odds.
@fangsup7263 жыл бұрын
Edit 1: So far, Gabe is right on the money with the Pistol Whip. Learn it and learn to love it. Ammo is scarce, and a lot of early enemies can be bopped around with the Bait Retreat Beat Repeat method, no reason to waste ammo on them. After all I'm sure bigger greblies are just ahead. But hey first dungeon cleared.

Second Dungeon time! I was pulled over by a woman in her early 20s. She lunged at me, and I just kinda held her off (I coulda slapped her) at which point she regains her composure and tells me of a nearby dungeon that she escaped from, and her friend is still being imprisoned at. And here's where the writing really starts to sink in and hit me in grim places. Objective: "Find a missing person. Or what remains of them." There is such a grim concept in those last 5 words. I silently pray its the former I find. Dungeon 2, Start!

Turns out Yahtzee is as right about bullets as Gabe is about Pistol Whip. The two must exist in equilibrium. To reject either is foolish. Also with Dungeon 2 Complete, we successfully rescued the remaining prisoner. The writing truly is the shining part of this game though, describing them tightly embracing, and how my character wanted to reject the 20 pounds for his hard work, but decided it was better not to. I actually smiled during this part of the game, both when finding the hostage alive, and when reading the results of my actions. At least if I don't save the world from the shadow, I've made life's last few moments a bit brighter for some people... That said, back on the trail. "T" has a job for me in Hoblrow. Time's a wasting. Hm? Phone? Text message. "Don't think I forgot its your birthday! Invest this wisely!" Thanks for the 9 pounds, mum.

Stopped in Waterborough to sort out a problem they had. I've uncovered more clues to the identities of the ancients...Yushg, Orange, Fear, Chzo, Red, Lust....It was all coming together. But it cost me a lot more than bullets and a few scratches... Something...chased me out of the house where I had found the captive. I ran as quickly as I could. Yet I can still hear its whispering, even as I sit here gently rocking in the car. It would not stop, I could see the faded aberration every time I closed my eyes. T had mentioned our kits contain "Extra Stregnth" medicine for such situations, but often warned about doing so. But do I really want do do that? I'm okay aren't i? Yes. The runes back there told me I'm okay. I must be fine. Besides, I hate needles. Just get to Hoblrow. It'll all be okay. The runes tell me it will all be okay, I will succeed. The runes wouldn't lie to me, would they?
@fangsup7263 жыл бұрын
"K....kill myself? W-w-w-Why would I do that runes?" "You said it would be okay, please tell me it will be okay." I shakily glanced at the medical kit in my car, and the various cuts and scrapes on my arms. "M-m-m-maybe a little b-b-it of medicine is fine." A small pen sized case in the medical kit beamed at me. "ONLY FOR EMERGENCY USE." With a quiet pause for thought, I asked the runes. "What defines an emergency?" They agreed this was a good time. A sudden rush of warmth and calmness flooded over me as I depressed the plunger on the syringe. "I'm okay. I'm okay. Its gonna be okay." With my mind temporarily in working order, I headed to Hobrlow's Hospital to refill my missing supplies. (The runes told me to get more of the needle substance as well. I agreed) Off to Sawley.

@romxxii9 жыл бұрын
Wow, you guys really messed up the clues on Gabe's playthrough. The first clue that you have misinterpreted was that Eu isn't Kthoth's rune; it's his enemy's. Since we know that Byarla and Gnix are allied, and Byarla is white, that means Gnix is the invader, his color is red, and his rune is Eu.

*Thank* you for posting this. I am a "fan" of the Arkham Horror games from FFG and I also like survival horror games so when you and Gabriel were chatting about this I was interested but couldn't find any review that would actually tell me about the mechanisms used in the game it was just watch while they blabbed or joked about it. This looks better to me than Arkham Horror because even though it is procedural, after watching so much of it, it doesn't seem to put you in situations where you're just hosed with nothing to be done. I will buy it now to find out for myself. Now I wish more creators of games did "ego" reviews. It's not ego, it's point of view and that of the creator I feel is always best. I'd still love to see alternate dimension Yahtzee do a ZeroPuntuation about it though!
