The 2.0L turbo in the Supra may offend some traditionalists, but the open minded will find a lighter, more nimble feeling Supra with a smaller price tag and lower cost of operation. Is the 2.0L Supra a "true Supra"? I'm not sure. But it is more fun than you might think.

Great review...wonderful car. I do have to say, having owned BMWs, their infotainment system doesn’t look futuristic or as flashy as most, but I’ve found it to be the most logically laid out and intuitive system I’ve used (Including Porsche’s PCM, Audi’s MMI, Acura’s crappy system, Mazda, Honda, Tesla, Mercedes, and Toyota). Agree the ACC could be better to engage, but that’s about it. Between the Z4 and Supra is a tough one, but I’d probably get the Z4. I’ve driven the Z4 (both versions), but not the Supra. But, for my driving style..commuting and cruising (no track days), the Z4 would fit my lifestyle better. I did find it a bit stiff for an every day driver though. Wish it was a bit softer. The modes don’t really change it much.

I still think they could had redone the Lexus RC or IS with 2 doors to make a supra. The parts bin was there, 3.5 is a decent motor and TT variant is in the LS500. I mean GTR is a v6 now when it was an inline 6. If I wanted a BMW it is going to be a M2 with a stick shift, which feels like a better deal for nearly same price is 3.0L Supra with more power.

Toyota is the largest automotive manufacturer in the world, they don't need BMW to build a Supra. They have more than enough money to make a sports car. They just don't care and don't want to. See the GR Yaris for when Toyota actually wants to try. You cant even roll sown a window when drivin this because of the wind buffeting issue. That's why I don't car about this "Supra" which is outdone by a better 2 series where actual engineering went into it.

I see what you mean now that you pointed it out. The badge engineering of certain components on the Supra (steering wheel with Toyota logo for example) make it seem like it was a low effort job. On the exterior it seems as though Toyota had it's way with some BMW influence. Of course you can also tell it is built much differently than other Toyota's since the Supra is made in Austria, plus BMW loves to use Torx & other more specialised screws/bolts/nuts/plastic fasteners under the hood and around the interior if you start poking around and notice little details.

@UCcHBHpah6VVmAZk-5xOB9Zg The Miata and the 'Fiata' are somewhat better distinguished together because Fiat is already known for small stylish little cars and the Miata just happens to be part of that category of car, making it philosophically more compatible in that sense. I'd actually argue that more effort was made to make the MX-5 & 124 Spider better separated apart from each other because the Fiat 124 uses the 1.4L MultiAir Turbo vs the Mazda SkyActiv motors. Both engines have a totally different feel. Plus the 124 Spider was modified extensively to make the 1.4L MultiAir fit in and work, alot of engineering effort. The exhaust manifold on the MultiAir engine is on the driver's side meaning that the exhaust pipe that connects to it actually bends around underneath the oil pan and front subframe to the passenger's side of the car and then connects to the catalytic converter and exhaust system from there. The Mazda SkyActiv 2.0L/1.5L has the exhaust manifold on the correct side, nothing special needed to bend around the oil pan/subframe. That is just one example of how Mazda went through massive engineering to make the 1.4L from Fiat work in Mazda platform.

I would definitely wait for the Z35 considering it will be offered with a 6-speed manual gear box. If they don't go crazy with the price or weight it will be a winner. Plus even with that retro 240Z grill everyone complains about (which I think will look fine in another color, just not yellow) the styling inside and out is immensely better than the new Supra, but then again I think the sleeker Z32 looks better than the bubbly mk4.

Alex, Did you say some people consider this BMW/Magna Steyr Supra to be an abomination? I don't think they are being very fair to abominations. Toyota just built a from-the-ground-up, high performance car ENTIRELY on their own, it is called the GR Yaris. Collaborations are fine as long as Toyota is building the cars with their own parts ie Suzuki Across and Swace.

Although Toyota claims the Cayman to be the main competitor to the new Supra honestly the car to compare it to is the new BMW M2 Competition. The M2 Comp in slightly more expensive than the Supra 3.0 Premium but it’s more powerful and offers a manual transmission. At the moment considering both have similar powertrains you could say the new M2 Comp in that respect is more of a Supra than the new Supra unless Toyota gives the Supra a manual transmission option which they should have done from the very beginning.

I don't get why anyone would not like the new Supra. The 2.0 is plenty. Less mass over the front wheels. I could really care less what happened before, but what is going on now and tomorrow. If you don't have 200 million to start a new platform, forget about it. That is just to start. I am concerned how much these parts will be since they are BMW parts mostly. But still I like what they did here and I could get along with the 2.0 just fine. Everyone else's mileage may vary.

As a former owner of a 1968 MGB I would choose the 4 cyl engine. A sports car should be as lightweight and balanced as possible and not be overpowered. I also am a fan of the Honda S 2000 and the Mazda MX5. They are just plain joyful to drive.

I'm a long time fan of classic British sports cars. The Austin Healey 3000 and the E-type Jaguar are (imo) among the most beautiful automobiles ever built. Scalding 0-60 and quarter mile times don't top my priorities; light weight and handling are far more important to me. Therefore, the Mazda MX-5 (in essence a modern interpretation of an MG) and the 2.3L Mustang are more appealing than significantly heavier vehicles that depart from a 50/50 weight distribution even if they take a second or more to complete a flat, straight line acceleration test. With that in mind I find the 2.0L Supra especially noteworthy. At less than 3200 lbs it's over 200 lbs lighter than the 3.0L Supra. And that's like having an NFL cornerback sitting on the hood of the latter. Unfortunately my family consists of a spouse, a teenage daughter, and a big dog, at least two of whom I enjoy traveling with. The kid is heading off to college in a couple of years and the dog won't live forever so perhaps I can seriously consider the lighter Supra in a few years.

Still, for the 9k I saved buying the Pure edition, you can get a very decent set of 19 inch wheels of your own choice, strut tower braces and even a custom brakes and sport suspension. It’s nice but it doesn’t have the performance, features, or space of a Model 3 and yet it’s 800lbs heavier than a Miata. It’s hard to justify at $45k because you can either grab the Miata for over $15k less and canyon carve the twisties or jump into a Tesla and enjoy the gobs of instant torque. You’d really have to be a Toyota/BMW fan for what is offered here.

First, it's 43k. If you're going to quote a number, make it the right one. Two, you are comparing all the pro's of other cars to the con's of this one, no wonder 'you'd have to be a fan'. 3rd, I think you have to admit this car his some appeal to you because you just watch the video didn't you?

Well, the Model 3 does have a back seat, so I guess that's something - but it's not someplace I'd want to put an adult. The Tesla offers acceleration, if that's your priority.

You sad that the Supra had more cargo space than the Toyota 86. Well that might be true with the 86 seats up when you put the seats down in the 86 it is very practical and has much more room.

@@rudfil - There is still a fair bit of crossover in those demographics. An American buyer who would've considered a Supra if it had a manual might move to a Mustang or Camaro instead. I'm one of those crossover buyers. I've had everything from 90's RX-7's and Supras to Hemi Chargers. If it's got speed, I'll give it a look no matter what it is.

I like the car, and the performance is in line with the price to a certain extent. The deal killer for me is that for whatever reason, the 2.0T Supra does not come with seat warmers as an option, and requires to step up to the 6 cyl. Makes little sense to me to gimp the lower engine model to lack this important feature for those of us in the Northeast.

I don’t believe these companies they can still make these cars alone, even at a lost because of the limited production, simply as a tech showpiece and to get you in the showroom to buy other more practical cars. With Gmail and Honda and others this is forced by governments which are forcing electrics on these companies and canceling pipelines etc. It’s all preplanned.

Toyota is doing so many great thigs right now, but they made absurd mistakes on the 2.0T. The brakes are an absolute joke, they show EXTREME fading, look up CarandDriver Lightning lap, quote: "The small calipers eat brake pads and rotors for breakfast. Temperatures rise, braking zones lengthen, deceleration weakens, and stabbing the left pedal becomes as useful as dropping anchor over concrete. A few hundred feet after posting our fastest lap we found ourselves racing into Turn 1, smashing the brake pedal and pulling-up on the electronic emergency brake. We ended up in the grass" That's absolutely inacceptable for a Supra! How could they decide to put shut sh*tty brakes on a Supra??? They will fade on a mountain pass!

I agree with Mr. Miller that there aren't many in the Bay Area. Limited availability, dealer markups, and there are many coupe choices in that price range. Annually in the U.S., Toyota/Lexus sells about 7,000 coupes (86's, Supras, RC's, LC's). Ford sells that many Mustangs per month, about equal to Prius sales.

Seems like a nice enough car, and the experience of driving a car like this is not and can never be like the experience of driving a sedan or coupe. It’s not about 0-60 times or lap times reported in some car mag. When you buy a car like this, or a Z4 or Nissan Z, you’re buying a fundamentally different driving experience. That either matters to you or it doesn’t. Having owned a Z3 3.0 for 10 years and loved it, the big question for prospective buyers of this car is whether they are prepared to deal with BMW level reliability after the warranty expires. In ways that matter from a reliability standpoint, this car is a BMW not a Toyota.
